Clear teeth!

Hopefully the title of this thread will catch some attention...

 

About 21 days into my whole 30 i started to notice my top 2 central incisors started to change from white to clear near the bottom of the tooth. Not ok. I floss and brush regularly so naturally i was not happy when i noticed this. 

 

Im normally a big milk drinker so im guessing i was starving my body of calcium during my whole 30. I followed my whole 30 religiously, stopped taking multi-vitamins, lost 22 lbs, totally changed my diet around etc etc. Overall i'm very glad i did it.

 

So a word of caution that radical alterations like this clearly (pun intended) can have negative affects on your body despite the many positive effects. I've since gone back to drinking my routine giant glass of milk at dinner time and in the 30+ days post-whole30 my teeth are almost back to normal.

I have a hard time believing that simply removing milk from your diet for 30 days caused your teeth to become clear. First, calcium from milk is not the only calcium available, if you are eating a varied diet full of leafy greens and healthy whole foods, you will get plenty of calcium. Second, our teeth, nails, bones and hair are several days if not weeks behind in demonstrating a reaction to what we eat.

I would recommend you see a dentist. Nothing...absolutely nothing about eating protein, vegetables and fat should cause your teeth to become transparent, nor should the lack of dairy cause this....if you were lactose intolerant you'd have see through teeth?

Am I reading this correctly,  you lost 22 lbs in 30 days?

yep, i weighed myself and took a photo morning of day 1. 

I didnt touch a scale for 30 days. 

I think i lost a bit of muscle in there too since i hit the gym pretty regularly and have a pretty athletic build.

I know it's hard to believe, hence why i posted it here. I allergic to nothing, sensitive to nothing etc etc. So naturally you can imagine my shock when both my wife and myself noticed this.

I haven't gone to the dentist specifically for this because im an engineer and anytime something fails in a system you typically start troubleshooting by analysing what changed. In this case it was my diet. I dont know if it was necessarily the milk, but i do know that:

before whole30=strong healthy teeth

post whole30=not so much

drinking milk again for the last 45 days=teeth returning to normal

 

Its strange i admit. At the very least its out there as a data point now. Maybe it will never happen to anyone else. Maybe i have magic teeth, who knows.

clear teeth generally point to vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Calcium, Magnesium, A, D and K2 are what you need (in combination--ie. without magnesium, calcium can not be used/absorbed properly). My guess is that milk helped because vitamin A and D are routinely added to commercially available milk.

 

Another way to address this is via whole foods and smart supplementation, ie: supplement magnesium and vitamin D because these are difficult to get from food sources. Eat foods containing Calcium, vitamin A and K2 (dark leafy greens, organ meats, egg yolks, etc.). Get some sunshine when you can so your body will produce vitamin D on it's own. The whole30 with a wide variety of vegetables, fats and animal foods is great for bone and tooth health. I'm sorry your experience was different.
