newwhole30er
7 days in and I am really feeling the deprivation. Grains, sugar, and dairy are my 3 favorite food groups. (Ok I know sugar's not really a food group, and probably some of you will say not the other 2 either.) Meat, fish and eggs are ok but truth be told I really don't like veggies that much. I just want to eat yummy food again!!! Hard to imagine that there will ever be a day when I will look at pasta/bread/donuts/etc. and say "meh I'd rather not." Does that really happen?? At this point, I'm worried that after depriving myself for so long, I'll just binge when I finish the Whole30.
Moderators ShannonM816 Posted June 28, 2015 Moderators Share Posted June 28, 2015 You may always like bread and donuts, but you really will hit a point where you don't feel deprived just because you don't have them. As for not liking vegetables -- which ones have you tried and how have you prepared them? Most vegetables are best roasted, and most seem bland and boring if you just steam them and then don't add sauces or spices to them. Maybe you need to look for some new recipes. Try this butternut squash recipe (although it's really more a fall dish): http://theclothesmakethegirl.com/2011/11/17/velvety-butternut-squash/ Or this cauliflower recipe: http://theclothesmakethegirl.com/2011/01/11/cocoa-toasted-cauliflower/ Or any of these salads: http://theclothesmakethegirl.com/2014/05/21/paleo-summer-salads-potlucks/
Moderators Tom Denham Posted June 28, 2015 Moderators Share Posted June 28, 2015 Cooking veggies properly makes them taste really good. Everyone who does not like veggies have been eating them badly cooked. You just have to learn to cook better. The easiest way I know to make any veggie taste good is to roast it in a cast iron skillet with a cast iron lid as in this example: http://www.wholelifeeating.com/2012/01/skillet-roasted-chicken-thighs-and-brussels-sprouts/
Noelle
Are you eating enough fat? Fat carries flavor, and makes things taste fantastic. Even vegetables. Butternut squash roasted in ghee is divine, and quite "sugary" to my palate—and I came to my current round of Whole30 after a period of multiple desserts on a daily basis! aaevk
Put some high quality ham in it!!!! If veggies are not your thing, try roasting/sauteeing them with prosciutto/other fatty, flavor-filled meats (or wrap them in prosciutto and saute them, or eat them raw prosciutto). Also, have you been using coconut milk in your recipes? Things taste AMAZING with coco milk. Try making a curry- it is super easy and you can easily add any kind of veggie to it (which will end up tasting like delicious curry and coco milk more so than veggie). I used this recipe: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/curried-coconut-chicken/just to get my proportions right (it is NOT NOT NOT compliant aka do not put in sugar). You could easily add some zuchini, aubergine, and have a little fresh cucumber on the side for a "salad". I did not put in the tomato paste or the tomatoes (b/c we didn't have any) but everyone LOVED it! Use the resources on google and force yourself to get out of your meal-preparing comfort zone. You will be amazed by the totally healthy, delicious, fantastic things you can prepare!!
Administrators ladyshanny Posted June 29, 2015 Administrators Share Posted June 29, 2015 Compliant ham is so rare that some of us are beginning to think it's mythical. Read the ham packaging carefully if you decide to go that route. It is nearly impossible to find without sugar.
rdallas05
I used to have this frame of mind and sometimes I'll get sad thinking about not eating that kind of food anymore (because I'm in this for the long haul), but then I ask myself WHY? I mean it's just food. Food is meant to nourish our bodies and obviously grains, dairy, and sugar have done more harm than good- after all that's why we're all here, right? I totally understand how you feel because I've struggled with those same emotions for a very long time, but maybe it will help if you try and look at it from a different angle? As far as the food goes, I eat delicious food everyday! Do your research, Google Whole30 recipes, get on Pinterest , go through paleo cookbooks. Just make sure you choose recipes with compliant ingredients and follow the meal template. Also, there is a "recipe" topic on this forum. If all else fails remind yourself of why you started a W30 to begin with and tell yourself you CAN do it... because you really can!
