caseyleezer
So I just ended my wonderful Whole 30 yesterday....quite the success. I no longer feel like I have massive sugar cravings (tho once in awhile dream about ice cream. Haha). My clothes fit better, and I look and feel generally brighter, happier, and more energetic (which I also contribute to the fact that I've cut out caffeine as well). So today I decided to reintroduce dairy. I'm currently on vacation in Seattle, and my friend walked up to me with this delicious homemade Greek yogurt from Pike Place Market. I had a few bites.....so far, so good. It was tasty and liberating to eat lightly indulge. Then onto lunch....grilled shrimp over greens and a little cup of clam chowder (with a cream base). Delicious, but kinda hot for a warm day. All was well....and then a few hours passed. And my GOSH!! Bloaty-ness and gassy-ness ensued!! AHHH!! What the HECK?!! I was hoping to be able to have a bit of cheese at dinner (shredded chicken and beef over greens/tomatoes with guac) or perhaps a bite of ice cream (something I know I'd like to be able to have once in awhile) but I just couldn't stomach it. At home nursing my stomach with some ginger kombucha now. Perhaps I added a little too much dairy too soon? Anyone else have a crazy reaction to dairy? At the same time....I'm grateful for the reaction. And to know that my body is working for me, and this Whole 30 is paying off already!!
MrsStick
I've had horrible bloat and gas from uncultured dairy like ice cream. Typically anything that has been cultured (cheese, sour cream, yogurt, etc.) is fine, though lately sour cream has been giving me post-nasal drip. jmcbn
Dairy is one of a group of foods known as the Big 8 - milk, eggs, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat & soy - the most common allergens in Western Society, and I'm surprised more people don't have these kind of reactions considering we're the only mammals who continue to consume milk beyond infancy, and who regularly consume the milk of other mammals.. It makes me sad too. I <3 dairy, but sadly it's an unrequited love...
Carlaccini
Yep dairy is that gift that keeps on giving for me..... .....It gives me things that I don't want. I can handle a wee tiny bit of high fat good quality dairy (however stomach bloat & gas does ensue) but that is a very minor reaction compared to what cheese and low fat yogurt does.... But do keep in mind that each dairy product may affect you differently. So while milk and cheese might be off limits you might be able to accept yogurt and 35% cream. Each person is completely different.

caseyleezer
Thanks for all of the feedback you guys. And for the articles ladyshanny! I'll definitely take it slow with reintroducing a couple other dairy components. But in all honesty....I just don't miss it that much. And the bloating and gas doesn't make it too worth it for me. MonciaB
Sounds like your issue is probably the lactose! I also just finished, and I also reacted to dairy, but my reaction was instant- sinus congestion and instant migraine. The instant reaction is probably protein related from what I have seen, where as the GI action is more likely the lactose. I love(d) dairy. Sigh. Britishgal
I am always fine on cheese and cream but milk makes me very ill...it may be worth trying types of dairy separately
librarianprincess
Clam chowder usually has flour in it, so I'd try the dairy again.
PeytonsMom
I had some ice cream yesterday (full fat salted caramel from a local ice cream parlor..and yes, with hot fudge) and felt fine....8 hours later I ate some plain Greek yogurt after dinner and ballooned up. Shouldn't it be the opposite? Allthough the yogurt was nonfat and might have had stevia in it?
Britishgal
Ice cream is (usually) made from cream and the yoghurt from milk so that could lead to a difference I would have ballooned almost immediately after the yoghurt but not the ice cream...but then I've always been that way on cows milk. It's almost a party trick how fast my tummy expands Goats and Sheeps milk yoghurt, I'm fine
PeytonsMom
I do like goat's milk yogurt and seem to have no problem with that or goat cheese. Cow's milk cheese does not seem to affect me either....but yogurt and milk plain is not good!
