KTH08
Today I reintroduced gluten in the form of pizza. I've not experienced any stomach cramping or digestive issues, but I am wide awake at 2:40 in the morning with restless legs and a mind that won't shut down. Could this be a result of the gluten? Or maybe the sugar that I am sure was added to both the crust and pizza sauce? I got great sleep during my Whole30 and now I feel like I may never sleep again. Anyone else have this experience during the reintroduction phase?
missmary
It could be either the gluten or the sugar. I would try going back to whole30 until you are sleeping well again, then intro either *just gluten* or *just sugar* to test it out.
Nadia B
I find the title very misleading Safe starchy carbs are usually a big sleeping aid for many. Your sleep disruption can be caused by several factors - gluten, hard work to digest pizza or dairy on it (did it have cheese on it?). It might have been your anticipation of a reinto consequences or some other ingredient if the pizza wasn't home made. Long story short, get a couple of clean whole30 days and try other form of gluten. Report back
MW517
Interesting. I just finished the Whole 30. I went to the movies last night and ate popcorn. I woke up in the middle of the night too and was getting great sleep during my Whole30. I think I may need another month. I am going to start another Whole 30 on Monday. I am willing to bet it is 'bad carb' overload causing sleep disruptions.
missmary
I woke up in the middle of the night too and was getting great sleep during my Whole30. I think I may need another month. I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but in case you do: the whole30 only works while you are doing the whole30. Doing the whole30 for 30 more days will not make changes in your body that then permit you to eat foods that bother your system without consequences. The whole30 lets you see what foods bother your system. After you are done you can use that information to create a plan that works for you by eliminating or limiting those bothersome foods. What I mean is this: you can do the whole30 for 30 days or 60 or 120 days but as soon as you eat corn again you will have trouble sleeping again (assuming that was the issue). The whole30 teaches you how to eat to feel good. It does not put a permanent fix on your body that makes eating the standard american diet healthy. MTNan
I don't sleep well if I have gluten either. Plus it makes me grumpy.
KTH08
I really think it was the sugar and not the gluten that caused such a reaction. I had more sugar, but no gluten, on the 4th and my entire disposition changed. I have struggled with depression in the past, but felt the best I ever had during the last two weeks of my Whole30. Then after the sugar on the 4th, I felt like I hit rock bottom and it has taken me the last few days of strict Whole30 Compliant food to feel "balanced" again. I am going to do another full 30 days to really appreciate how great I feel when I make positive food choices and slowly try the reintroduction process again. Thanks, all, for your input! RubytheSugarDragonSlayer
@KTH08 - your post turned on a "light bulb" for me. I had bread for the first time in about 40 days on Wednesday and again on Thursday and both nights I woke up in the middle of the night and had trouble getting back to sleep. Have had sugar a few times and no sleep interruptions. Slept like a champ during my W30, and on all other compliant days since. Thanks for connecting those dots for me - I don't think I would have made the connection without you. Will experiment a bit with it over the next week to test the theory for my system.
