Day 4 and feel like I've been hit by a truck! Giving blood tomorrow- tips please!

Recommended Posts

Ugh, very fuzzy headed today, do NOT want to wake up and be at work, feeling a bit faint and lacking energy. I guess that this is the carb-hangover hitting? Thought I'd got away with it though!

I had a good breakfast of fish, the ubiquitous egg, spinach and fried potatoes so I'm hoping I will feel better soon!

Plan for the day is to drink lots of water, have protein salad for lunch and avoid the sugary stuff at work. I have a meeting after work as well and there will be biscuits so that will be a challenge!

Oh, I am giving blood tomorrow as well, at lunch time so I am planning on eating lunch before I go in but there are biscuits afterwards and I do feel like I should have something to raise my blood sugar afterwards. What do you suggest? I was thinking dates or a banana, I know these shouldn't be snacks but not sure if I will actually need them for a quick blood sugar hit? would I be better taking a boiled egg or salmon in mayo or something?

Thanks!

Becky

Your breakfast sounds like it was a good one to set you up for the day so I'm guessing you're feeling a little more energised by now.

Re the blood donation tomorrow, your blood sugar levels shouldn't be just as unstable during a Whole30 because of the foods you are eating, but seeing as you are at the early stages you may need a little something. I'd suggest plenty of water and something like a hard boiled egg & a starchy veg with your banana as back up.

Well done on donating - people like you saved my life some years ago!

When giving blood, you're not actually losing much in the way of blood glucose. You're mainly losing liquid and the electrolytes in your plasma. The real reason behind the cookie and orange juice is to get you to sit down for a moment and rest. My recommendation would be to have plenty of water afterward and pack a mini meal (protein, fat, veg) to have as back-up in case you feel like you need extra food. Go by how you feel.

I would also recommend trying to have a few hours in between a meal and when you give blood. Everyone reacts differently to blood donation, but donating too closely to a large meal can lead to vomitting. When your body is reacting to blood loss and trying to keep your heart and brain alive, one of the first places that it shunts blood away from is the stomach and GI tract which means anything in your stomach has to go. For me, donation within 30 minutes to an hour of a meal is too soon. You might consider having a big, filling breakfast, donating blood, and then eating lunch afterward.

Thank you! I'm an old hat at giving blood, think this will be 40th unit or something! So I am ok about eating before, just the not having sugary stuff after that I was worried about.

I'm planning on sausage patties, tomatoes and mushrooms for breakfast and then having either lunch or a snack before donating (I will take both with me and either have lunch if I'm hungry before 12 or just have the snack and leave lunch til after)

Thanks for all your help.
