Miles39
Wife wants popcorn as a snack. I told her it wasn't compliant. Am I right.

Moderators Tom Denham Posted July 8, 2015 Moderators Share Posted July 8, 2015 Eating snacks - even snacks that are not banned foods - undermines the Whole30. The concept is to eat substantial meals of protein, fat, and veggies and to eliminate snacks.
Alisonlcarver
Why does eating snacks undermine the whole30? I thought the idea was to eat a meal when hungry, eat to satiety, and stop once satiated. If someone follows this but is still legitimately hungry between meals, it makes sense to have a snack that is like a mini meal...

If someone follows this but is still legitimately hungry between meals, it makes sense to have a snack that is like a mini meal... Ideally you want to go 4-5 hours between meals without being hungry -- it allows your digestive system time to rest between meals. if that's not possible, yes, have a mini-meal rather than being hungry. The work "snack" has connotations to it that make it a little different than "mini-meal." A snack for most people, at least in the US, is something grabbed quickly and eaten mindlessly, like nuts or fruit (or when not on Whole30, chips or sweets), that you can easily overeat without even realizing it, and that you may eat even if you're not hungry, out of boredom or habit. That is what goes against the Whole30.
MeadowLily
Posted 02 August 2012 - 01:36 PM 'Grazing or eating lots of meals distorts the natural rhythms of your hormones. The ideal for them to work is to space meals 4 to 5 hours apart. So the focus on this approach is three main meals with pre- and post-workout meals and snacks as needed. We don't want you to be hungry during a Whole30 and you can eat a snack if you are hungry, but it is best if you eat substantial meals 3, maybe 4 times per day and don't need snacks. The ideal of a snack is a mini-meal - protein, fat, and veggies. Not a piece of fruit or some carrots. The purpose of eating is to give your body nutrition. A piece of fruit can be part of a meal, but it does not supply enough nutrition to serve as a meal itself.Once your body adjusts to eating this way, hunger is less frequent and easier to manage. I needed to eat 5 to 6 meals per day when I started doing this in 2010, but now I find 3 meals a day satisfying most days. I even find it easy to go 6 or 7 hours without eating when I am fitting in a yoga class and need to fast 4 to 5 hours before class."

MeadowLily
Posted 14 March 2014 - 05:28 PM "You can complete a Whole30 while doing a lot of things we recommend you not do. You would seriously undermine the value of spending 30 days eating Whole30-compliant foods if you snack on fruit all day long. The best way to get your hormonal rhythms where they need to be is to eat a substantial breakfast of protein, fat, and veggies within one hour of waking in the morning and then eating two more meals that are spaced 4-6 hours apart. If you snack all day long, you will undermine your hormonal adjustments. It is okay to snack if you are hungry, but snacks should be temporary, until you get the hang of eating enough at each meal to be satisfied until your next meal. You should not eat because you are bored, because you have a habit of eating, or because you like to eat so much that you want to eat all day. An important part of the Whole30 is establishing a healthy relationship with food. Eating fruit all day is not a healthy relationship with food."
