Do I really need 2 days in-between reintroducing?

I finished up my Whole30 on June 30th, and have been doing the reintroduction fast track according to the book.

 

Alcohol - used Sauza Blue tequila (to avoid grain-based....trying to go pure with the reintroduction) - no reactions

 

legumes/soy/etc - no reactions, which surprised me because I usually got discomfort with beans. I had black beans, but only a little more than a palm-size portion...was that not enough for "testing" purposes?

 

non-gluten grains (did this today)- had steel cut oatmeal in the morning. Could not verify it was 100% gluten free because it came from my work cafeteria (although I don't think oatmeal really has that much gluten in it anyway)...well I noticed what I call "burpy heartburn" (when you burp and it kinda lingers as a heartburn-y feeling). However, I had this reaction whenever I had oatmeal (or oatmeal bars, cookies, etc) before Whole30 so I'm thinking it just might be the oatmeal?...Had corn tortilla chips for lunch and was fine, although I noticed I was feeling my old habit of snacking on tortilla chips coming back, so I'll have to be cognizant of that...had quinoa with dinner and so far so good

 

My question here now is a little self-serving: it is my birthday tomorrow (Wed) and I will be spending it at a casino/resort. I would love to be able to have some of the good food there, but I don't want to sabotage my efforts...so...

 

Do I really have to wait until Friday (today was reintro, W and TH are days 1 and 2, so Fri is new reintro) or, if I kept as Whole30 as possible but maybe added the dairy/cheese, am I able to reintro a new group the day after a different reintro? If I "splurged", would I need to start the whole Whole30 again? Or could I wait a couple of days and then continue with the reintro?

 

I ask this because I haven't had any life-changing negative reactions from the foods so far (other than the oatmeal, but I hardly eat that anyway so I'm not too concerned). I am a little cautious of reintroducing gluten/wheat/pasta/etc as that heartburn issue and intestinal distress usually happen when I have too much of that

 

Results from the Whole30 have been great! I found it relatively easy (once I got the hang of food-prepping) although the cost for trying to go organic, buying a lot of eggs, a lot of chicken, occasional steaks, etc was quite a bit of a shock. When I weighed myself on Day 31 I was down almost 20 lbs and it didn't feel like I had even done anything hard, and my cravings were down significantly!

If you want to have a genuine reintroduction period and know for certain how you react to different foods then, yes, you need to wait 2 days between reintroductions. Ultimately, it's your call on how to proceed. You've completed your Whole30 and if you want to indulge on your birthday, that's your decision. Introducing multiple foods at once will muddy the waters for figuring out specific sensitivities and would require another Whole30 to "clean the slate" for a new set of reintroductions (or just to do controlled reintroductions for the foods you didn't test this time around.)

 

Bottom line: If you want to know how you react to various things, then yes, follow the reintro plan as written. As with everything else in the program, there is a method to the madness. If you would rather eat whatever you want on your birthday, then go for it. You've still accomplished a Whole30, made progress, and it sounds like you've gained some self-knowledge on at least a few different food groups. Now comes the part where you have to figure out and decide how to ride your own bike.  ;)

Thank you, Munkers! So if I splurged I might not have to do a strict 30 days again? It probably depends on how I feel when I splurge too, right? If I notice effects could I just go Whole30 for a few days to get back to "normal" and then resume the reintro where I left off?

 

Chris, I had the peanut butter with apple and felt ok (normally, peanut butter gave me worse heartburn than oatmeal, but this time I felt nothing - I got one of those single serving packets from Sprouts). For lunch I didn't have miso soup, but I had soy amino acids (Braggs I think?) on my salad. And then the beans for dinner.

Negative responses to foods can be subtle enough that many people do not notice them during an introduction. It is only when they conclude that X does not bother them and they start eating it frequently that the effects pile up and after awhile they realize that they don't feel as good as they did.

 

Another issue is that some foods may not bother you until you eat it several days in a row. So you can "pass" a brief test and then discover down the road that you life is better without X. 

 

After a splurge where you eat a lot of off-plan foods, you might be okay to resume reintroduction testing after a multi-day period of clean eating to reset. Some people might get back to feeling great and being in good shape in 5 days, while some might need 10. It depends upon lots of variables.

If you splurge and don't follow the reintro pattern of 1 day of testing followed by 2 days of Whole30 eating AND if you want a genuine elimination/provocation trial, then you DO need to do another Whole30 to wipe the slate clean. A shorter stent than that could muck up figuring out what you're truly reacting to. For example, if you do the dairy today and notice some unhappy feelings, is it a delayed/lingering reaction from the grains, are you reacting to the dairy, or is it a case of dairy and grain being too much to handle all at once?

 

Like Tom said above, a shorter stent of eating clean might be able to get you some answers or your reactions may be too mixed to say for certain. The splurge followed by a mini-reset (like a Whole7, Whole10, or Whole15) is a grey area and you'll have to decide which shade of grey you're comfortable with and what works for you.
