Coconut Oil by the Spoon

You could. Do you just really, really like coconut oil plain? Because if you don't, there are a ton of other options. You can make mayo. There are all kinds of sauces you could use, like chimichurri sauce or sunshine sauce or hollandaise. Olives are a fat source, as is coconut in any form -- toast some unsweetened, unsulfured coconut flakes and top vegetables with them for a little crunch or make a curry with coconut milk. Occasionally have some nuts if you like.

I suppose technically it would be ok. Are you talking about literally eating a spoonful of coconut oil from the container?

Your question concerns me and makes me wonder whether you're building enough fat into your meals?  You want to aim for consuming a variety of different fats. 

What have your Whole30 meals typically looked like? Are you adding a fat at every meal, per the recommended meal template

Have you tried it straight from the spoon? I'd have to say I tried using it for oil pulling and it made me gag... There would have to be better options for you as suggested above from Shannon & Chris surely?

LOL, yep, gag!  I do use it for oil pulling but I cannot (CAN NOT) allow it to melt in my mouth, I'll hurl.  I take it liquified with a couple drops of peppermint essential oil in it and it's totally fine.

Meal 1

4 egg omelet cooked in ghee. Mixed veg. Half an avocado. Portion of hazelnuts.

Meal 2

Chicken breast in garlic. Mixed salad with olive oil. Half an avocado. Blueberries and cherries. Portion of walnuts.

Meal 3

Smoked haddock in ghee. Fried egg. Mixed veg. Half an avocado. Spoon of coconut oil. Coconut flakes. Apple and gooseberries.

I am trying to eat more fat and protein as my clothes are getting looser and I can't afford to lose more weight. 5'10" 140 lbs.

Im on day 7.

Hoo boy!  Eat more!  MORE!  Whole avocado for breakfast.  Cooked veggies at lunch, couple more eggs at dinner with another whole avocado.

In answer to your original question, if you want to eat straight coconut oil from the jar, go nuts.

If you like the coconut oil, that's certainly one way to get more calories. We'll just think you're a little weird is all -- but I'm pretty sure we're all weird about something, so it's okay, you'll fit right in.

I sometimes have a small spoonful of coconut oil if I need to add fat. Personally, in very small amounts (like 1/4 tsp at a time) I prefer it to coconut butter.

 

One point I'd like you to consider: For 30 days, we ask you to forgo dessert. Even thinking of your fat as "dessert" perpetuates a relationship with food that treats it as reward. Reframe your thoughts, words and actions. Have the spoonful during your meal, not after as a treat.

I think he was referring to the size of the spoon, not eating the oil as a dessert :) (a dessert spoon is basically the spoon from your cutlery set, as opposed to a tablespoon, which is a specific measure).

I've just seen the latest comments. I actually quite like it?!?!

Me too!  Lol - glad I'm not the only one.

 

I have a heaping teaspoon of coconut oil in my morning coffee, and in my tea at lunch and supper. I love it this way, and I feel like I'm sure to be getting fat in at every meal. Does this sound alright?

There's nothing wrong with it, although it certainly shouldn't be your *only* fat at the meal.  Remember that the template calls for 1-2 servings of fat, where a serving is 1-2 "thumbs" of oil or butter (see the template for serving sizes and other recommended forms of fat).  The real question here is whether you are feeling satisfied and full without getting hungry between your meals (4-5) hours.

 

Hope that helps!  I'm sure the moderators will weigh in on your question, too.

I have been completely satisfied between meals. Haven't had the urge to snack at all and my meals are at least 5 hours apart. So I'm thinking with the fat in my meals, and the coconut oil in my coffee and tea I must be getting enough. I'm on day 13 and loving the whole30.
