taylorashleyd
http://imgur.com/Y9slv9B We have a dietician in a group saying as long as a smoothie is chewed it wouldn't be the same as drinking your calories, so it would make an acceptable meal choice. I hadn't heard of this. Any thoughts?
MeadowLily
Hooey. A bunch of hooey. I drank coffee and smoothies for years. Both ruined me. Eat real food every day to keep the cravings and thrill eating away. Only real foods give you satiety for your palate. You have to eat real protein in the form of fish, meat, and fowl along with your vege and good dietary fats to stop cravings.
Administrators ladyshanny Posted July 10, 2015 Administrators Share Posted July 10, 2015 I get the "chewing" idea, because the actual motion of chewing activates the digestive process. However, the food is already liquid so it digests at a much faster rate than non-liquid food. The answer is still: Smoothies: We’d rather you didn’t This is a very popular question, with a very unpopular answer. Smoothies (generally made using lots of fruit) are technically compliant on your Whole30, but we strongly recommend against it. Food that you drink sends different satiety signals to your brain than food that you chew. So when you drink your meal, your brain isn’t getting the feedback it needs to tell your body that it’s had enough of what it needs. Plus, smoothies are generally really fruit-heavy, and starting your day off with a liquid sugar-bomb sets you up for cravings, hunger, and volatile energy levels throughout the day. In summary, we’d rather you just eat the food, and skip the smoothie. - See more at: http://whole30.com/2013/06/the-official-can-i-have-guide-to-the-whole30/#sthash.mAUzt79i.dpuf
taylorashleyd
Thank you both! I've never been a smoothie fan myself.
MeadowLily
No kiddin', deluxe sugar bombs that won't do a thing for your blood sugar. It doesn't matter if there's whey protein powder or whatever highly engineered protein powder that was created in a lab that you put in there....they won't help you in the long run with anything. Artificially created powders are not real food...they are denatured protein.
Moderators Tom Denham Posted July 10, 2015 Moderators Share Posted July 10, 2015 Honestly, I know from experience that you can fill up on smoothies and be hungry in 2-3 hours because liquid moves through your gut faster than whole foods that have been chewed. I had to eat 4-6 meals per day when I began the Whole30 process. One big reason for that was eating smoothies in the morning and needing to eat again quickly. When I stopped eating smoothies, it was easy to drop down to 4 meals per day... and over time down to 3.
cleaninguplife
Even smoothies made with kale/spinach, almond butter (with almonds as the only ingredient), lemon juice, complaint coconut milk, and just a little frozen berries? Sigh. Super healthy, easy for an on the go person, and delicious. So. Did. Not. Want. Veggies. Today.
MeadowLily
Yes, they are easy....but you don't want easy. You want the Whole 30 simple, non-negotiable principles that will lead to your smashing success on Day 30 and beyond. The easy way often involves zero cooking. Larabars and smoothies, baby food pouches, fruit and nut butters...all of the portable items that require no cooking. Quick and easy. Raw vege will not soothe your digestive tract in the long run. Nut butters...ditto. How many 140-200 lb babies have we ever known? None. Baby food pouches are formulated for infants/babies and a Whole 30 requires some cooking. You want a big honking breakfast. It sets the tone for your entire day and it is the ticket to rock steady blood sugar. Smoothies are a straight shot to the bloodstream but they won't sustain or train you. If we do what we've always done...we'll get what we've always gotten. A Whole 30 has rules and smoothies are not the way to go.
czdrill
What if I want to have a smoothie IN ADDITION to my morning breakfast? Not a large one, by any means, just as something to drink while I eat my spinach frittata, or leftover salmon etc... I usually make smoothies with a triple berry mix, spinach, avocado & either chia or flax seeds.

Further, chia and flax seeds are fat sources on a Whole30 and are recommended to be limited. Drink water instead and please give the Whole30 recommendations, along with the rules, a shot to get the best results on this program.

No smoothie in any permutation is ever going to be greenlighted as a recommendation for folks doing the Whole30 unless you are specifically looking to gain weight. Regardless of your reason for wanting to have it, it is still liquid food, it still digests faster and bypasses the body's satiety signals and it is still usually very sugar heavy. Again...smoothies are what we recommend for folks wanting to gain weight. If this is not a goal for you, perhaps just eat a small bowl of berries in the morning with your breakie.
