Lucky_Bean
I need help, I'm on Day 14 and craving Lärabars which is not a bad thing, but I'm not sure if it's ok to eat 1 per day??
Moderators ShannonM816 Posted July 14, 2015 Moderators Share Posted July 14, 2015 No. They should be for emergencies only, as in you're stuck in a massive traffic jam for hours and have no other options. The best way to fight cravings is to make sure you eat enough protein, fat, and vegetables at meals to not be hungry for 4-5 hours between meals. If you're truly hungry and need food between meals, make it a mini-meal of protein, fat, and vegetables -- like a hard boiled egg with some guac and carrot sticks, or leftovers from a previous meal. Larabars are as close to a candy bar as you can get on a W30 and having them will keep cravings for sweet things alive. It's best to avoid them completely. Administrators ladyshanny Posted July 14, 2015 Administrators Share Posted July 14, 2015 Larabars are an approved food in the event of an emergency only, not because you are craving sugar. Failing to deal with your sugar cravings in a way that does not rely on sweet foods is doing yourself a disservice. There is a huge amount of learning and healing that can be done if you can work through sweets cravings. If you absolutely have to eat something, eat protein and fat. If you are not actually hungry (ie, steamed fish and broccoli does not sound appealing), don't eat, go do something else. A larabar once a day would not technically be breaking the rules, ingredients-wise, but is not in keeping with the spirit of the program.

Moderators Tom Denham Posted July 14, 2015 Moderators Share Posted July 14, 2015 Here is a special rule for you personally: You may not eat Larabars under any circumstances. There is no emergency sufficient to justify your eating even one bite of a Larabar. Note: The only reason that Larabars are allowed at all is because the Hartwigs bend over backwards to be consistent in ruling any product in or out during a Whole30. However, based upon the way Larabars are consistently misused, abused, and incorporated as if Paleo candy bars were real food, my back refuses to bend. Just say no. Lucky_Bean
I won't eat them anymore, I always have enough for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Just have a business trip the last 3 days of my whole30, I might need them during these days, but I'll try to plan it as detailed as possible. Just won't be able to take any food with me on the plane...

Just won't be able to take any food with me on the plane... You could try jerky or even things like Epic bars that wouldn't be quite so candy-like. I don't travel a lot, but I know people do take food on planes, there are just rules. Nom Nom Paleo has a podcast about traveling while paleo -- I haven't listened to it, but it might have some helpful tips. Even if you don't actually listen to it, there were a few things on the page there at the link.
MeadowLily
Spray the entire stash with Raid and you won't be tempted to go searching for them in the trash. One per day is like eating one Snickers bar...almost the same amount of sugar grams. Carry Raid on your belt...spray everything that gets in your way of a compliant Whole 30. I won't eat them because of the sugar grams. Larabars are quite often a staple of the non-cooking Whole 30's. Grab N Go. Fruits, dried fruits, nuts, nut butters, Larabars and those baby food pouches instead of roasted vegetables. Grab N Go Whole 30's won't get you there and on Day 31, the results are not stellar from use of snackity foods swapped out for cooked/baked/roasted/grilled meats, fish, fowl, roasted vege and good dietary fats. missmary
I don't travel a lot, but I know people do take food on planes, there are just rules. This. I have taken kale salad on a plane before. It was fine. Just make sure you pack anything that might be considered a "jell" or a "liquid" in a small enough amount in your separate clear bag with your toiletries. All other food is fine. Mitch55
Maybe it's just me being a stubborn Irishman, but I can't give any money to General Mills or other Big Ag corporations... As far as Larabar, they don't even try to hide how horrible they are, but I understand cravings, and wish you the best
Emgee
I don't normally have Larabars, but today I had a job interview, and then got stuck at the job I have with no good food and hours to go before dinner. I know. Very poor planning, but all I had in the fridge was chicken salad and I was worried about letting mayo sit in the car for an hour in 90-degree heat - even with an ice pack. Anyway, I had a Larabar in my desk which I bought weeks ago. OMG! I cannot eat these EVER AGAIN. I don't even crave sugar (salty fat is my thing), but this was too sweet, and actually started to bring on a sugar craving. Lucky_Bean, if you have even the slightest sweet tooth, staying away from these little sugar coma-inducing bars is a good idea!
Lucky_Bean
Thank you all so much for your help! I got over it, now I'm eating fruits when I'm craving sweets after dinner Mitch55, what do you mean with Lärabar doesn't even try to hide how horrible they are? I'm actually very interested in things like that and would like to find out more, did you read an article about them?

I got over it, now I'm eating fruits when I'm craving sweets after dinner Lucky_Bean, if you want your cravings to go away, it's best not to eat fruit when you have them. Eat the fruit with your meals, and if you're not hungry but craving, don't eat anything, do something to distract yourself like go for a walk or read a book or work on a craft or hobby. If you're truly hungry, as in you could eat something bland like plain fish and broccoli, have a mini-meal of protein, fat, and vegetables instead. I'm not sure what Mitch meant but the reason that I will personally never allow one to cross my lips is because the sweet innocent little Larabar company was sold out to Kellogg and Kellogg the Huge Food Behemoth dumps zillions of dollars into the fight AGAINST gmo labelling. As in, if they don't want me to know what goes into my food then I don't want them to have any of my money.
