Day 12 - Guess I'm typical

Recommended Posts

"Days 12-15: Boundless energy! Now give me a damn Twinkie"

This is exactly how I feel. I want chocolate!! Ice cream! I don't even eat ice cream!

How do I stop this? I am currently eating lunch and dreaming about toast while I eat my chicken with brussel sprouts and a little potato. Would a banana with almond butter help quell the cravings or make them worse?

A banana with almond butter would probably make it worse, it's sweet enough to leave you wanting more sweet stuff.

Try to distract yourself -- go for a walk, read, talk to a friend, something to keep you busy and away from food (once you've finished lunch). If that doesn't work and you absolutely must eat something, have some more chicken and brussel sprouts. (If you read that and think, ewww, I don't want more chicken and brussel sprouts, I want a banana and almond butter -- you're not really hungry.)

As Melissa and Dallas say...Eat a fat and protein.

"If you’re craving sugar, don’t give your body sugar! Eat high fat instead, with a little bit of protein, and tough it out. Break those cravings once and for all. "

Best,

Melissa

Melissa @ Whole9 says

It may take a week or two… it may take a month or two. Depends on how bad your sugar demons are, and how you treat them during your Whole30. Dallas likes to say you can’t kill the sugar dragon with willpower, you have to STARVE it. So don’t give in to those cravings during your Whole30 by using fruit as a crutch… stick it out and it will get better.

Best of luck to you!

Melissa

Ok, Ok!!  No sugar!   I did not cave much (I did have a bit of the almond butter - about a tsp). But, I did not have the fat/protein combo because I am at work, and that chicken/veg meal was all I packed besides the almond butter and banana (they are going to go bad and my BF can't eat them fast enough). I wasn't hungry, just craving stuff.

I do have a question, though. I see a lot about plantains on this site. When plantains (or platanos, as we called them growing up) are ripe and cooked, they are just as sweet as a banana. Why one and not the other? I looked on the threads, but when I search plantains, I just get every recipe or listing of them. Is there a plantain vs. banana thread?

Both plantains and bananas are permitted on Whole30.  The suggestion that they were making to you was to not use the sweetness of the banana/almond butter combination as a cure to your craving sugar.

If you want to eat plantains as your starchy veggie serving, go right ahead.  If you want a banana with your meal go right ahead.

Make more sense?

Thank you, ladyshanny! Yes, it makes a lot more sense. I also did not clarify that I was having more of a craving for carbs than sweets. I realize that my examples were sweet, but of all the examples I listed, toast with butter would be number 1! I dream about it.

When I do eat fruit, I am good about having it with a meal. I have tamed the snacking demon! (For now...)

Are you having a serving of starchy veggie with at least one meal per day?  Do you exercise? Are you approaching your period?  These are typical reasons that we can crave more carbs and should honor that need with.....more carbs at your meals.  :)

Yes, I do have a starchy vegetable a day (usually sweet potato or a little bit of white potato). I do exercise, but I hadn't on that craving day - just sat at my desk at that point. I am not approaching my period. That happened just as I began my Whole 30, and I had a really hard time not snacking at first.

Last night, I dreamed about chocolate chip cookies, and I don't even like them.

Another big difference between a plantain and a banana is that the banana is high in fructose whereas the plantain is not. Plantains are actually a decent choice if you're on a fructose-restricted diet. Instead of being sugary, they're starchy. It's basically the same reason why sweet potatoes and other starchy veg are recommended over fruit for post-workout nutrition. Too much fructose can be problematic in the body.

Actually, that would depend on the degree to which is has ripened. Many people on these boards are enjoying very ripe plantains (platanos maduros to us Puerto Ricans) regularly as a banana alternative.

"Ripening changes were studied in plantains of three cultivars, two Horn types and one French type, and compared with those in bananas ripened under the same conditions. Bananas contained 1% starch when fully ripe and none when overripe, whereas plantains contained about 9% starch when fully ripe and 3% when overripe (composition expressed as percentage fresh weight). Total sugar content was 23% in fully ripe and overripe bananas but in plantains it increased from 20% when fully ripe to 27% when overripe. The ratio of glucose:fructose was approximately unity for bananas and plantains at all stages of ripeness. Sucrose comprised more than 70% of the total sugars in fully ripe bananas and plantains and about half of the total sugars in overripe fruits."

Unfortunately, I am no stranger to the pitfalls of fructose  malabsorption.
