ldietrich25
Help!!! I am so upset! My husband and I are on Day 2, and I have been following and preparing for Whole 30 like it's my job. Well, hubby wanted frozen burger patties in preparation for Whole 30. He read me the ingredients over the phone, and what I didn't realize is that he skipped everything in parantheses, and shortcut "Encapsulated Salt" to just "Salt". He cooked 2 for himself tonight, and 1 for me. After about half the burger, I made the comment that it tasted way too good to be ok for Whole 30. Pulled the bag out, and I am pretty sure they are Whole 30 illegal. Please tell me if I am right or wrong. Don't want to start over Ingredients: Angus Beef, Beef Flavoring, Encapsulated Salt (Salt, Soybean and Cottonseed Oils). They were purchased in the frozen food section at Sam's. Moderators SugarcubeOD Posted July 21, 2015 Moderators Share Posted July 21, 2015 Any type of soy product is off limits for the Whole30. As you are on Day 2, my advice to you would be to do a Whole32 and just extend by 2 days. Its seriously gross what the food manufacturers put in food and the fact that they'll sneak filler and junk anywhere they can! A valuable lesson that we have to read even those things in the parentheses...
healthycrone
You're not kidding. Can anyone tell me why "natural flavorings" need to be added to meat? Doesn't it have flavor that is just fine on it's own? And what about all those "solutions"? Meat was the last thing I thought I had to read an ingredient label on...boy was I wrong! Moderators SugarcubeOD Posted July 21, 2015 Moderators Share Posted July 21, 2015 My guess is that these frozen things have 'added flavor' ('beef flavor' in beef burgers!??) because it's not high quality meat and would not taste appetizing without additions. To Ldeitrich, I've been thinking about food prep... maybe if your hubby wants something super easy for dinners, you guys could buy ground beef, make it into patties and then freeze between pieces of waxed paper. That way you have frozen patties and you could make a dozen or so in an hour one weekend or evening and then you'll know exactly what was in it... a little more work up front but a huge pay off in the end! ldietrich25
Oh trust me, I am well aware on the food prep. I have spent the last 3 days slaving in the kitchen which is why I'm so upset about this set back. I've made 3 batches of homemade mayo, roasted a chicken for chicken salad, made clarified butter, made my own homemade beef broth, made nomnompaleo's frittata muffins, hard boiled a dozen eggs, etc. I even have ground beef in the fridge, but my husband wanted these burgers... Ugh looking like a Whole 32 for us now...
Munkers
Ouch. That definitely sucks. On the bright side though, at least this happened on day 2 and not day 20. And you're super prepared for the next week (or more!) going forward! You can do this! I'm really boggled at this "encapsulated salt" business. Just salt the burger. Or, better yet, leave it alone and just let it be plain meat. (I'm legitimately shaking my head over this.)
