PowerTool
Hi there! I notice when I shop for tuna, the INGREDIENTS list: tuna, water, salt... and then the CONTAINS says, "tuna, soy." The only tuna I found that does not have soy on the "contains" is $3.50+ per can, which is too expensive for me to use tuna as a sustainable protein source. Do you have any insight to the ingredients vs. "contains" on cans? And, do you know of a secret soy-free tuna that I don't know about? Administrators ladyshanny Posted July 22, 2015 Administrators Share Posted July 22, 2015 Unfortunately if it is saying "Contains soy" that's because there is soy as part of one of the other ingredients (eg, as part of the broth that they use for flavouring). It would be off limits. I'm in Canada and almost all of our canned tuna is free of any additives except the stuff that is flavoured (chili lime as an example). I've heard people on these forums talk about Trader Joes having a compliant canned tuna as well as Wild Planet? I am not privy to what these cost though. Moderators Tom Denham Posted July 22, 2015 Moderators Share Posted July 22, 2015 Vendors often list vegetable broth as an ingredient. When the can says "Contains soy," you can be sure the vegetable broth includes soy. I buy canned tuna from Publix (a big grocery store in my area) for about $2.29 per can. There are more than 30 varieties on the shelves and only two of them don't contain soy.
PowerTool
Thank you! We have Publix as well, I'll look closer, and ladyshanny I appreciate it!
Sheena812
I get Starkist in a pouch that only has tuna and olive oil.
SpinSpin
I do WIld Planet, that I get at Costco for 14 for 5 cans -- a bit spendy, but I have tuna maybe once a week. I have heard, but not purchased, that the Kirkland tuna is soy free -- but as always, read the labels! You can always try sardines too -- they are rather tasty and are cheaper than tuna. fmr_sailor
I have found compliant tuna at Walmart. I also found some Wild Sea tuna at Target that is the best tuna I've ever had. It was $1.99/can, but they clearanced it out of our local store at half price. And I bought all 13 cans that were there!!
