Squash chili - not exactly a chili?

I've made the squash chili from the Whole30 Success Guide; the ingredients are:

Ground beef or turkey, olive oil, acorn squash, mushrooms, onion, garlic, chili powder and cumin

It's not especially chili-like - i.e., it's not liquid at all. The instructions make reference to "adding water occasionally as it simmers" but there's no liquid in the recipe. Should there be?
