JulieP757
I wouldn't eat it. I make my own nut butters using my Vitamix and I add coconut oil to get the consistency right. The official position is this: Safflower/Sunflower Oil: Yes, reluctantly (because sometimes, you have to dine out) While we don’t think vegetable oils are a healthy choice (understatement of the century), we don’t expressly rule them out on the Whole30. If we did, you’d never be able to eat outside of your own kitchen, because all restaurants use them in cooking. We wanted to create the healthiest program possible, but we also need it to be do-able for those who travel for business or pleasure, or simply want to dine out during the month. Tip: Eliminate the consumption of vegetable oils at home, even if you’re not on the Whole30, and make sure the rest of your diet is focused on the most nutritious choices possible, especially if you dine out frequently. Letthemusicplay6
I wouldn't eat it. I make my own nut butters using my Vitamix and I add coconut oil to get the consistency right. Hi Julie. (And anyone else reading that can help with my question(s) I am interested in trying to make my own Cashew Butter as well. I have never heard of a Vitamix before. Just checked out their site and noticed that there are a few different modals. Which one (If any) is the best one for making Cashew/Nut butters with? Or is there something better you can recommend that can make nut butters better then a Vitamix? For example, do you use your Vitamix to make nut butters because you already have one to make other things with and it can be used to make nut butters as well, so you use it? If you didn't own a Vitamix and you wanted to buy something specific just to make nut butters with, what would you buy? Also how is the ratio when you make it? For example, does 1 pound of Cashews make a 16 oz jar of cashew butter? Or it doesn't work that way? Also, how do you measure the amount of coconut oil to add? Lets say if you were making a batch of 1 pound, 2 pounds etc of Cashews, how much coconut oil do you use? Also, does the coconut oil need to be in liquid form for the best results? Or you can just mix it in there as a chuck? lol I know, a lot of questions. I really appreciate and thank whoever in advance can answer some of them. I am a huge fan of Cashew Butter. I mainly buy Artisana and sometimes Gopals but I've always wanted to try to make my own. Thanks everyone!
JulieP757
I already have a Vitamix that I use for all sorts of things. If you get one, you will want to get a dry blade container. I got mine online from Costco and it came with both the wet and dry blade containers. This is the one I have: http://www.costco.com/Vitamix-5200-Blender-Super-Package.product.11609068.html I'm sure you could also use a food processor. You can use raw cashews or cashews you roast yourself. The amount of coconut oil varies w each batch. I start w a tsp and go from there - and I use the regular (non-liquid) coconut oil. Google how to make nut butters and you will find several videos out there. Definitely watch them so you know what's supposed to happen. The first time I made it, I was sure I was going to burn the Vitamix motor out
jent103
I've made cashew butter in my regular food processor and it turned out great. I used this Alton Brown recipe, though obviously you'll want to leave the honey out to make it Whole30-compliant. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/cashew-sauce-recipe.html
Munkers
Nut butters can be made in any food processor. The biggest difference will just be in how long it takes your nut butter to get smooth, depending on the power of your appliance. Sometimes I add oil to my nut butter, sometimes I don't. Just depends on that particular batch of nuts. If they seem to be getting smooth and creamy on their own, then I don't bother with adding anything else. If they're staying kind of gritty, then I might add something. You might also think about experimenting with different combinations of nuts to make nut butters. I threw together a batch one time with macadamia nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, and pecans and it was pretty good!
