Beach*Bike*Run*Mama
My 10.5yo daughter plays soccer. She drinks a fair amount of ice water and loves Gatorade, along with her teammates, as a change. I HATE HATE HATE Gatorade, hence my paleoness. In the crazy high temps, I want to keep her interested in drinking at her games & practices. She HATES coconut water. I have tried Propel water with a little fruit infusion or juice, both of which she hates, as well. Any other suggestions?? TIA!!
LucieB
This will all boil down to personal taste preferences, but here's what I do. I drink these all day long closer to room temp, but when ice cold I love these after a hot run and I drink them all day long. Ice cold water with a splash of apple cider vinegar. About a tablespoon per quart? It gives the sometimes blah water a bit of a zip. Then I add variations on slices of lemon, lime, orange, ginger, cucumber, mint leaves. It depends on what I have on hand. I if want electrolytes I'll add some sea salt and nu-salt (potassium). Another bonus is that once the water is gone you can add more, shake it up, and have more flavored water without adding more fruit! I'll also use cooled tea as a base in place of water. I like green, lemongrass, and linden teas as they blend flavor-wise with my add-ins. Takes some experimenting to find what is appealing.

This makes me sad. Humans are evolved to enjoy water and fruit. There is no reason for hate except possibly the fact that she has been given the option (now or in the past) of drinking hyper sweetened engineered beverages like gatorade. Stop making gatorade an option. For hydration, water with fruit juice really is a great option, add a pinch of sea salt on hot days. Maybe offer her a higher percentage of juice to start, watering it down more and more as days go on? EDIT: I just looked up propel water. this is not water with juice, like I thought. Propel water is artificial sweeteners and electrolytes. If you feel electrolytes are needed beyond what is in sea salt, you could use drops like elete, but I would skip the propel. http://elete.com
Beach*Bike*Run*Mama
Thank you so much!! Lucie, I make herbal iced tea all the time for myself. Never thought to hide electrolytes in a iced herbal tea! Thank you...will try at next practice. I am intrigued by the ACV. My daughter has a thing about vinegar (stems from months of molluscum treatment). Molly, I have a 10yo girl. She's all about drama and, yes, she doesn't "dislike"... she "HATES". She drinks ice water BUT wants to fit in with her friends and WANTS Gatorade. Do I buy it? Absolutely NOT but some of her coaches do. Soda, Gatorade, etc are off-limits at home but I send her out into the world and with her paleo knowledge. She knows what's healthy and what's not...but she's a 10yo girl who wants what her friends have. I am trying to provide healthy options to sway her away from the artificially colored, sugar-loaded junk. I constantly drink fruit-infused water and coconut water. Hoping she will follow my lead. In the meantime, she's 10.
