Rfisher261
Hi everyone! I'm starting my whole30 tomorrow August 10, and I just found out I have a family gathering on the 22nd. A cousin recently passed away in Florida and his brother, who lives here in New England as most of the rest of our family does, is having a memorial service for him, since most of the family cannot travel to Florida for the funeral. There is a memorial service at 4 pm and then a "Coffee-and" starting around 5. For those not familiar with the phrase, "coffee and" generally refers to coffee and pastry. I come from a huge Portuguese extended family (my mother has 62 first cousins), and generally any celebration or memorial, etc. is usually followed by getting together at someone's house to gossip, celebrate, and drink coffee/tea and eat pastries. There is usually only dessert available, not dinner. Since it falls around dinner time and I don't want to deal with raging hunger while trying to fend off the sugar dragon, I'm planning to eat an early dinner before going to the memorial service. Also, it's common for people to bring food to these gatherings so I was thinking of bringing a big fruit salad, so at least I'll have something I can eat. Just wondering if anyone else had tips for dealing with the situation or any other ideas/recipes for what I could bring that would be Whole30 compliant. Thanks!! MTNan
So sorry for the loss of your cousin. I like your idea for eating before the memorial, however if at all possible, try to not snack during the "coffee and." Although a fruit salad would be compliant, eating only fruit would be a huge feast for your sugar dragon and cause a spike in blood sugar. If it's at all possible, try to make do with some tea or water. If you know you are going to want a small snack, try to take something with protein and fat. Maybe a small gray of meatballs, with some veggies and dip? Prosciutto wrapped melon and a bowl of olives? I'm sure other members here will have better ideas. Blessings, and do what you need to do to get through!
Administrators ladyshanny Posted August 10, 2015 Administrators Share Posted August 10, 2015 I think you're all set with your plan of eating early. Make sure it's a nice template meal that has adequate fat and some starchy veggie as that will help to downplay cravings and take the shine off of whatever temptations might be there. If you're unsure about the tea they'll have, drop a few tea bags in your purse, brew a nice big mug and enjoy the company of your family. You could also throw a cooler in your car with a couple peeled eggs or chicken thighs and some olives so that if you're there longer than planned, you can pop out for some air and a quick mini meal. As far as bringing something, if it's normally just dessert, probably don't bring anything. If you can bring proper food, how about a crock pot full of chocolate chili? Perhaps you aren't the only one that would appreciate some proper food around then?
Rfisher261
Thanks for the suggestions. I do plan on bringing some tea bags with me (since I need decaf/herbal tea anyway). I'll also have some emergency protein like an epic bar in my purse in case I'm really stuck. I'm going to try and find out (sneakily through my mom) if since it's around the dinner hour they will be having more than just sweets. If so, I have plenty of ideas for what to bring.
