Digestive problems/allergy? Restart?

Recommended Posts

I'm on day 9 of whole 30 and everything has been fine until today, feeling great, no cravings, quite tired.

I made lunch, it was an unusual lunch for me because grocery delivery is coming tomorrow so it was just a case of what was in the fridge.

Leftover homemade cottage pie that I ate for dinner last night (coconut oil, onions, garlic, carrots, beef mince, stock (no non meat/veg ingredient), tomato purée (100% tomatoes), Tin of tomatoes, the sweet potato topping was sweet potato, salt, pepper and ghee. I had 1/2 an avocado with that and a vegi juice made with celery, cucumber, lemon and a carrot.

I also took some high quality supplements that I used to take. I went through them all last night and excluded my probiotic because it contained rice bran oil and my multivitamin because the vitamin e in it contained soya oil.

I took:

Iron: bulking agent (cellulose), iron phosphate, capsule shell (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, ethanolamine phosphate, anti caking agent (silicone dioxide and magnesium sterate)

Glucochrome: chromium, cinnamon extract, R,S, Alpha Lipoic Acid, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, chromium picolinate, silicone dioxide

Vitamin C containing magnesium ascorbate, bilberry powder extract, capsule shell: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose

Folate: folate, microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, silica

Amino support: N-acetyl Cysteine, L-Carnitine, L-Tyrosine, L-Argenine, L-Glutamine, L- Isoleucine, L-leucine, L-Valine, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose

Black cohosh: dong quai, sage, black cohosh, Angus cactus, hops, milk thistle, magnesium, vitamin B6

Saw palmetto: saw palmetto - vegetarian capsule

Omega 3 : fish oil, fish gelatine, glycerol, peppermint oil, antioxidant: natural mixed tocopherols.

Tranquil Woman Support: magnesium, l-theanine, Siberian ginseng powder, pantothenic acid, turmeric powder, aloe Vera extract, niacin, riboflavin, thiamin, vitamin B6, folic acid, chromium, vitamin B12, capsule: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose

I'm taking the iron because I have low iron, the folate because I'm planning on trying for a baby soon enough, the vitamin C to help increase iron absorption, the black cohosh, saw palmetto, and tranquil woman to help regulate my hormones because I have PCOS, glucochrome to help with insulin resistance and I have no idea why I'm taking the amino acid one, omega 3 because of potential build up of omega 6 in my body from the seed oils.

Within minutes of eating lunch and taking supplements I began to feel very ill. My intestines feel like they've swollen up. I'm producing gas and can barely get out of bed.

Did I slip up and eat something non compliant?

If I didn't and I'm just having a reaction to something else do I have to restart anyway because my gut won't have had 30 days of rest?

Do you normally take all of those supplements at the same time?  You also said "used to take".  How long has it been since you were regularly taking these supplements?

Unless you're actually sick, I would think that you might want to give yourself a few days from these if they are somewhat new right now and then try them again and see.

PS.  feel free to stay away from the vegetable juice.  It is not at all recommended to drink any sort of juice on Whole30.  Just eat the veggies instead.  ;)

First off I'd check the stock unless it's one you made yourself - many in the UK have off plan ingredients.

Re the supplements: that is practically an entire medicine cabinet of supplements there, and I wonder if you couldn't lose some of them for the duration of your Whole30 as you should be getting all of the nutrients you need from the wholesome food you're eating.

I know if I sat down & swallowed that many I would feel ill. You say you "...took some high quality supplements that I used to take" - have you not been taking them lately? And if not, why did you feel the need to re-start?

The iron & the folate I'd say fine (& the glucochrome if it's something your Dr has specifically prescribed) - the remainder I'd question whether or not you really need them given that eating this way should balance your hormones naturally.

I was taking the supplements for about 9 months and stopped 3 months ago because of depression. Could barely eat/wash - so swallowing pills was not an option.

It was the marks and Spencer's beef stock liquid in a bag, all it has was beef and vegetables listed. No starches or sugar.

Did you just start them all again today? I'm with jmcbn, that amount of pills into my gut would hurt after months of not taking any.  Remember that supplements are manufactured and not at all like normal food so your gut could be revolting over the mass of intruders all of a sudden.

I'm not medically trained but I'd ditch the ones that aren't totally necessary - that is any that have not been prescribed by your GP - and see how your moods & hormones stabilize by following the template.

Just ensure you are eating meal one wihtin an hour of wakening, eating enough to keep you satiated for 4-5hrs, and avoiding snacks at all costs. Eat a wide variety of meat, veggies & compliant fats and you should honestly get everything you need from your food.

It's enough of a change to your diet without adding in the supplements too.

Thank you all for all your replies.

The pain lasted 5 hours and has now resolved almost completely. I feel really upset about this, like I messed up big time.

I started the iron again a week ago, because I am bleeding really heavily and losing a lot of blood, but the rest, yeah, I started today, in one go.

I think I will continue with my Whole 30 and I will avoid the vegi juice - I only made it because I love the flavour and not the texture of celery and had a whole one in my fridge and not much else.

I think I will stop all the supplements again except for the iron and then maybe reintoduce one or two (maybe my black cohosh) in a week or so.

You didn't mess up, nothing was non compliant, you haven't broken your reset.  If you have some or can make some, bone broth is gut healing in case your tummy needs some extra TLC.

I'm glad to hear you're feeling mostly better and that you've got a plan going forward.  :)

I have to step in and say that many of those supplements interfere with the absorption of the iron supplement, and other than the iron, the folate, and maybe the glucochrome (if that was suggested by a physician) are likely doing very little. They definitely would have caused the upset stomach. Also, Black Cohosh and Saw Palmetto have very very little evidence that they do anything at all (I'm in the pharmacy field).
