amandamarievth
I did my whole30 (Whole47) in May. Since then I have transitioned into super clean Paleo. I basically follow the whole30 but don't sweat the sugar my bacon was cured in. Over the last month though I have noticed bloating, gas, stomach distension and diarrhea that has continued to get worse over time. I THINK it is from the FODMAPS. I have been indulging in fresh stone fruits at the farmer's market since late June amongst other fresh veggies and fruits. So I am cutting out all the mean fruits and veggies listed on the FODMAPS charts I have seen on paleo and IBS websites. My question is for those who have been there, when can I expect to feel better? I realize it can take 5-6 weeks for my gut to heal, at least, but what have your experiences been removing these from your diet? It is starting to disrupt my life (the diarrhea just hits me without warning) so I am looking for a little reassurance. Thanks for your input!!! Noelle
I started suspecting FODMAPs towards the end of my Whole60. I removed FODMAPs the last week in July, and my worst symptoms (bloating, belching, upper GI discomfort) were gone in a week. My lower GI symptoms are still hanging on 2-3 weeks into low-FODMAP eating. Things are definitely improving, but I'm not expecting big results for a while; I've dealt with alternating constipation and diarrhea since toddlerhood. I'm also still trying to figure out my ideal dose of probiotic foods and magnesium. Both kombucha and Natural Calm have been helpful, but too much of either, and I'm spending lots of extra time in the bathroom.
Bet
It shouldn't take that long. I'd say a week or two max. Unless you have an underlying condition like IBS.
LucieB
I felt better after a week, I did a FODMAP elimination diet for 8 weeks then started reintroducing. This alleviated most of my symptoms but not all, and I took more extreme measures this summer to address that. But back to FODMAPs... I learned that those lists are a helpful start, but you still need to tweak for yourself. For example, green beans are considered safe, but I can't eat more than half a cup. It took dedicated food logging to identify the culprits. Sometimes a food is on the low FODMAP list, but the list doesn't specify the amount of food considered that is low. So you'd eat a cup of something safe, only to get sick and learn that only a quarter cup is safe. Do you keep a food log here?
amandamarievth
LucieB I have not kept a food log on here. I will have to look into that as an easy way to keep track. While I was doing my initial whole30 I wasn't experiencing these issues, just over the last month while still being super clean. Bet that is exactly why I was hoping for some shared experiences. This way I know if I am not feeling relief in a week or two I may need to contact a GI specialist even though I have never had GI issues ever in my life until now, which is why I am hoping it is the FODMAPS. Thanks for sharing your experience Noelle! I am hoping that eliminating things will help so I don't have to take supplements. I hope!
GoJo09
There's an app called My Symptoms where you log all your food and drink (incl quantities), and then any symptoms, and it makes the connection between "when you eat X you always suffer Y". I think it also gives suggestions for why you might have the symptoms. That seems to be a lot easier than trying to look back over a written log would be and making connections yourself. GoJo09
It does cost a couple of bucks, and it will be time consuming to record every ingredient, but totally worth it if you have ninja attacks of digestive distress!

I've been diagnosed as being fructose intolerant, and after seeing a nutritionist, their basic take on it was this: sure, it could be food, but it's your nervous system, ie for me...stress + mental health too. Something that you might like to think about trying is a probiotic like these from iherb.

When I reintroduce the FODMAPS I will use that app for sure! I downloaded the free version, it is a little lacking, I will need to try the $3 app instead, thanks! I am a little afraid of probiotics only because I WAS taking them regularly and having constant diarrhea until I stopped them. There are so many option that have so many different strains I don't know how to know which ones I actually need.
