SugarDemonBaby
Hi, I'm day 11 of Whole 30 and I have some Bone broth in my slow cooker at the moment - very proud as I tackled carcsses and necks and giblets no bother and I normally won't cut up chicken breast if I can avoid it! I would like to drink it because I had some gut problems during the week - BUT I don't know if I can drink it between meals or not? I normally stick to water with meals. Some days I've have kombucha with meals. I often have green tea, peppermint or camomile tea after or between meals. I would have had 1-2 lattes a week before whole 30 but no daily coffee habit. I don't like the idea of hot drinks with meals especially in summer and I'm not sure if I can have bone broth between meals because it has calories whereas tea doesn't? Also - any recommendations for getting benefit from bone broth? I'm thinking first thing in the morning? Many thanks, Laura
Administrators ladyshanny Posted August 13, 2015 Administrators Share Posted August 13, 2015 There's no "better time" as far as i've ever heard. I have been off of it for the summer but in fall, winter and spring I drink it between my breakfast and lunch (I have a 7 hour gap). It is considered a hot beverage on Whole30 but has the added benefit of those calories/fat so it works out alright as a stop gap snack if you need it. I drink 500ml once a day. SugarDemonBaby
Thank you. I can't wait for my bone broth to be ready. 6hrs 30 to go! It smells amazing, like the most delicious chicken soup of your dreams!
SugarDemonBaby
Is the fat I will take off the top ok to keep for cooking? I used two organic chicken carcasses plus necks, and carrot/spring onion tops/celery/onion/garlic/thyme/salt/pepper/cider vinegar.
Administrators ladyshanny Posted August 13, 2015 Administrators Share Posted August 13, 2015 You can either take the fat off the broth and use it for cooking which would be delicious, or you can just leave it on and when you reheat the broth, it liquifies and incorporates into your drink. Be CAREFUL with hot fat though, it heats faster & higher than the broth, retains its heat longer and because it "coats" your mouth and throat you can easily burn yourself if you are not careful. But it is DELICIOUS to retain the fat in the broth!
MrsMarks
Ladyshanny said it! Nothing like ruining your broth with a tongue burn! I would keep it in and just be cautious.. it's so yummy!
Juice06870
I just made some bone broth 2 days ago for the first time all year. I really missed it! Smells so good when it's cooking and I love having a cup of it at night after dinner.
Administrators ladyshanny Posted August 13, 2015 Administrators Share Posted August 13, 2015 Ladyshanny said it! Nothing like ruining your broth with a tongue burn! I would keep it in and just be cautious.. it's so yummy! I did this last winter. Heated some pork broth, stirred the fat in and took a big swallow and blister burned the entire inside of my mouth (even between my teeth) and all down the back of my throat. It was disgusting and extremely painful. Please be careful. (this did not put me off drinking the fat, I'm just much more careful now!)
Munkers
I've never been much of a coffee drinker, but a hot mug of broth in the morning is pretty awesome. I'll also do it in the evening while I'm prepping dinner.

Nancy7476
I drink it in morning instead of coffee sometimes. At 7am in my travel mug no one knows its yummy bone broth instead of coffee. Very satisfying especially if need to get out of house and not hungry for breakfast. Also great to sip while cooking dinner.

Administrators ladyshanny Posted August 18, 2015 Administrators Share Posted August 18, 2015 Oh my word! Owwwww! I have blistered my tongue before but nothing like that! Oh, it was absolutely awful, I have never experienced anything like that before. I ate ice cubes and homemade popsicles during every meal (ie, one bite of food, one bite of numbing ice cube/popsicle, one bite of food, one bite of popsicle). It was ridiculous. TriciaC
I made some last night in my crock pot. I used bone with marrow to cook. Is that okay to use. They were beef bones from the buther, but there was not any meat on them, just marrow bones.

You can poke the marrow out when you're straining your soup... it's kind of weird because it floats in the broth like little globs but it's tasty and SO good for you!
