Redhotmama
im on day 11 of my 1st whole 30. I have a strong metallic taste in my mouth. Anyone else experienced this? What's the cause? What can help?
jmcbn
Are you including starchy veg in your daily intake? Are you very thirsty? Going to the loo a lot? Sounds like you might have gone too low carb...
Munkers
Ditto jmcbn. Another possibility: have you eaten pine nuts recently? Maybe you had some in a pesto? There is a condition known as "pine mouth" that can result from eating pine nuts. It's not dangerous or anything to be concerned about, just really unpleasant to deal with. akela9
Also, also (depending on where you're coming from BEFORE your W30): You might be eating quite a bit lower carb then your body is "used to". If you happen to be in ketosis (which is not necessary, but I could see how it might happen with all the diet changes) that can lead to metallic taste in mouth, funky smelling sweat, etc.As jmcbn said make sure you're getting plenty of water. (And fat. And healthy carbs!) Munkers: "Pine Mouth." Awesome. I didn't know that was a thing. I learn every day!
Britishgal
I get a metallic taste in my mouth, particularly on my teeth, if I eat spinach. I love spinach so I just accept it but it does happen every time!!
Marybeth R.
I am on day 7 of my first Whole30 program, and I am experiencing the metallic taste in my mouth with a vengeance. It started yesterday evening. This is not fun. As it happens, I did make a spinach basil salad 2-3 days ago which had pine nuts in the dressing. I have never experienced Pine Mouth (aka Pine Nut Syndrome) before, nor had I ever heard of it, but I am convinced that is what is causing this as I have some of the other symptoms from this "allergy" as well. It can last up to 2 weeks, which is going to make the Whole30 a definite challenge, because no food tastes good right now! Perhaps it can be exacerbated by ketosis??? https://pinenutsyndrome.wordpress.com/pinenutsyndrome/ http://www.fda.gov/Food/RecallsOutbreaksEmergencies/SafetyAlertsAdvisories/ucm247099.htm

It's okay to have starchy vegetables like sweet potato, potato, winter squashes, and root vegetables, most people seem to feel best if they have at least one fist-sized serving of one of those each day.
