Too Much Weight Loss (Don't Hate Me!)

Recommended Posts

Anyone can help with this?!?!?

I LOVE Whole30.  My husband and I did our first round in April and loved it. We wanted to eat healthier and my husband needed to lose some inches around the gut area :) We completed our first round and felt GREAT.  Took a little break and recently started another round....but had to stop half way through due to too much weight loss.

When we started our first round I only weighed 115lbs.  I wasn't doing this to lose weight but to eat better, I am down 10 100lbs and honestly, I am now wayyyyyyy to thin!! Please help!! How can I continue a Whole30 lifestyle without all this weight loss???

Typical Food intake:

Breakfast: 2 eggs; sausage link; little container of guac (buy a Costco); cup of fresh fruit

Lunch: can of tuna/chicken; olives; veggies; more guac; tessemae dressing (this is a typical lunch; I will also have left over meat from the night before if there is any, always olives bc I love them :) ) fruit

Dinner: meat (and I dont limit size) veggie and potato

Have you read this article on keeping weight on during a Whole30? It has some tips that might be helpful for you.

You probably need to be eating closer to the upper end of the template at most meals to ensure you're eating enough. That means aim for more than one palm-sized portion of protein, more than one thumb-sized portion of fat, and as many vegetables as you can stand to eat, including plenty of cooked vegetables, as you'll generally be able to eat more of them than raw ones.

Your breakfast has no vegetables at all. Definitely add some. Don't let fruit push the vegetables off your plate -- in other words, ensure you're eating enough vegetables first, and then if you want some fruit, have some. You could have more than one starchy vegetable a day for sure. Maybe at breakfast have some hash browns made from either potatoes or sweet potatoes, or try this Velvety Butternut Squash recipe, which is good hot or cold. At all your meals, aim for two or more cups of vegetables, more is always okay.

You don't list any fat at dinner -- be sure you add some. More olives, some mayo, avocado, make some sauces to go with your meat and vegetables, whatever. Just be sure you have some.

The solution to not losing weight is to eat more while focusing on protein, veggies, and fat. And on the off chance that your digestion is not good, you should perhaps try a course of digestive enzymes along with probiotics.

I am one of the biggest eaters I know. I typically eat two palm-size portions of protein at meals 2 and 3 and sometimes 3 palm-size portions. I often cannot fit everything I prepare on one plate, so I eat the first plate and then add the rest of what I have prepared from my wok. I do this because I wake up in the middle of the night hungry if I don't. I would like to eat a little less, but will have to figure out why I wake up hungry first.

I am only on day 4 of whole30 and I've already lost 5lbs (109 to 104). This seems very drastic to me and I cannot afford to lose any more weight. I am thin enough as it is being 109lbs. I have not been hungry AT ALL. I don't have an appetite and every meal I feel like I am forcing myself to eat. I have followed the guidelines perfectly and have been eating as much as I can. I have been tired, weak, low energy, and mentally just want to do nothing. I really do not enjoy avocados unless it's in guac. Tried the whole30 approved mayo and, no exaggeration, my gag reflex kicked in on the first bite. I don't know what's going on but I have to find a way to make sure I don't lose any more weight. I am eating PLENTY of protein.

Why are you weighing yourself? The whole30 asks you to refrain from weighing yourself and for good reason.

One of the first things that happens on the whole30 is that your body will shed inflammation. You did not lose 5lbs of fat or muscle or bone in four days, you lost excess water you were carrying around. This is a good thing. For most people, eating meal template amounts of whole foods, will find weight loss slows once the water weight has shifted. This is also perfectly normal and healthy. People who need to lose weight will often then drop a pound or two a week after the initial whoosh. People who don't need to lose weight usually don't lose much more as long as they continue to nourish themselves.

If you are not feeling hunger cues (and instead feeling tired, weak and low energy--which means you need more food), that is a good sign something is a bit off hormonally. The best solution for this is to eat. Make yourself a template meal and eat evenly from it. When you can't eat any more, put it away and return to it whenever you feel hungry again. Most people doing this find they get their appetite back before very long. Do make a whole30 meal you enjoy--it is OK to have guac whenever and however often you like, no need to gag over mayo if it doesn't work for you.

I weighed myself because I am already underweight. I'm not going to sacrifice going under 100lbs just to follow the whole30 scale rule. I am NOT doing this to lose weight. I am doing it to see if I have any food sensitivities.

It's day 6 and I'm still extremely tired, with no appetite, even foods I like such as eggs are completely unappealing and I could barely finish what was on my plate this morning. I'm trying to eat, but I really and honestly am not hungry

Hi sshort,  unfortunately eating reduced quantities due to lack of appetite begets further lack of appetite.

Is it possible that you have come down with something? How much of a departure is Whole30 from normal (ie, what were you eating before)?  Were you a vegetarian/didn't eat much animal protein before?

Hopefully you read the article that Shannon posted above surrounding keeping weight on.  Everything you eat for now should be a dense source of calories (think lots of guacamole, olives by the can/handful, cooking in ample animal fat, drizzling oil onto cooked veggies, rubbing meats with coconut oil before grilling, starchy veggie such as sweet potato/regular potato at a couple meals a day, making something like potato salad with eggs, white potatoes and that paleo mayo...might be better mixed into something).

If you aren't sick, you really have to get eating and the only way to do that is to just do it.  Make things you know you like (mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, boneless skinless chicken thighs baked, Silky Gingered Zucchini Soup are some of my personal favourites).  For you, because you need to keep weight on, you could also try making yourself a smoothie.  You are the special subset of the Whole30 population where smoothies aren't discouraged.  It's possible that having the smoothie will trigger your hunger for regular food...just try not to make it a massive sugar bomb.   :)

Try adding plenty of fat… a spoonful of coconut oil or coconut butter on top of yam or potato, add nuts onto salads/soups and other dishes, extra olive oil in dressings and drizzled over veggies, avocados in every form (guacamole, plain, dressing), etc.

Fat is super DENSE in calories… So it should help you achieve the maintenance level you want (as long as your metabolism handles fat well!). I also eat a moderate portion of starchy veggies at almost every meal.

To be clear: I'm sure ladyshanny means have a smoothie in addition to a template meal, not instead, especially not for you.

The only thing that was different from my regular diet was the elimination of grains and gluten and of course a little sugar. Otherwise, I have eaten organic for many years and exercise regularly. I am really really trying to eat and force myself to do it, but like I said, it's been very hard when I start gagging even on foods I normally like. I'm not coming down with anything. No fever or any other symptoms. I've been trying really hard to incorporate more fat.

Did you gag on food before whole30? I'm wondering why you are now if you are eating the same foods just without the grains...

Sadly, as both a one time eating disorder sufferer and counsellor I know that the only way is to just eat...and every time eat a little more. There isn't a magic formula xx

I just had my period last week, so I doubt that's possible. I could take a test to be sure, but I don't think that's it. I'm really hoping to start getting an appetite. I'm just really concerned that things I normally ate before the whole30 are completely unappealing. I've been trying to at least eat what I can eat that doesn't cause me to gag

It certainly is strange.  Especially because the Whole30 didn't really "do" anything to you.  It's not like taking supplements or cleanses where you are ingesting all manner of weird things designed to do weird and aggressive things to your body.  You simply stopped eating sugar, grains and dairy and replaced those with protein, veggies and some good fat.

Temporary loss of appetite is somewhat normal as your body rebels over losing its beloved gluten and sugar.  Gagging consistently over previously enjoyed foods is not a normal side effect.
