Fully committed to the entire 30 days starting August 20!

Hi All!

My name is Judy and I just turned 50 last month. I think this is a great time to do a nutritional re-set!! It took a little bit of convincing, but I've gotten my dear husband of three years to agree to join me. I'm hoping that as a team we'll find it easier to stick to the plan.

At this point, I don't have any worries other than making the time to do meal planning. I've been cooking most of our dinners at home since my husband had a stroke about two and a half years ago, so the cooking shouldn't be a problem. I think the more challenging part for us will be eating three full meals every day. We're often in the habit of whipping up a quick peanut butter and jelly sandwich or grabbing a granola bar on the run.

My personal goals, aside from just completing the cleanse:

*  Get rid of my daily heartburn

*  Have fewer general aches and pains, especially in my arthritic hands

*  Adding more fish to my diet (I only eat fish when somebody else cooks it; preferably battered and fried :-/ )

*  Initiate a less couch-potato-type lifestyle

*  At my last physical, my fasting blood sugar was elevated. I want to lower it before it becomes a problem

*  Feel more rested when I wake up in the morning

* I think this is far enough down the list to say that I wouldn't mind losing about 40 pounds (not in 30 days, of course)

I expect to be challenged by:

*  Keeping up with planning ahead (of course, it's only 30 days, so it shouldn't be too hard, right?)

*  Missing my nightly cocktail before starting to cook dinner. I suspect I'll be just as happy substituting kombucha (my scoby arrives tomorrow!!) or one of the other festive beverages from the book...

I've cleaned out my fridge and pantry. I've never committed to a new eating plan so completely, so I have high expectations for success!! We went out for pizza and beer tonight, just to make sure I get a good case of heartburn in the hopes of really appreciating the changes that I anticipate once we embark on this new eating adventure.

Cheers!

Judy

Hi Judy, today- 8/20 -is my start day as well, although I'm doing it without my husband. I was interested in the fact that our goals and challenges are so similar, our start date the same, and our ages close- I'm 55. I hope to get rid of my heartburn, feel fewer aches and pains, gain some energy, and lose 20 pounds- although I realize the latter won't happen in 30 days. I too am totally committed- started the morning with my black coffee, about to prepare my eggs and veggie breakfast, then heading off to work out. (Working out is not a change- I already do that 3x a week). I wish you and your husband good luck- will check back to see how you're doing! Libba :)

Aside from spending too much time in the kitchen, it's been going great! I haven't had any cravings, and definitely haven't been hungry. I'm planning to spend a couple of hours doing some good prep tomorrow in the hopes of decreasing my daily kitchen time.

The first week is in the books! It wasn't nearly as hard as I expected it to be. I suspect the fact that I'm feeding my whole family this way instead of making mine separately makes a big difference. Looking back at my goals, I can say that I haven't had a single episode of heartburn all week AND I cooked salmon in the oven. The salmon was pretty tasty, especially when I dipped it in the cucumber-dill sauce. I can definitely see myself eating it more often. I have resisted getting on the scale even though some days my pants do feel a little bit looser. I'll just keep my fingers crossed :) I've been making an effort to get to bed earlier, and have even been successful on a few days. I love the idea of getting a full night's sleep on a regular basis!

My biggest challenge for the coming week is that I'm traveling to New Jersey for a going away party for one of my best friends. I'm pretty sure I can work around the food problem by offering to cook while I'm there. Not drinking wine at the party will be a little tougher, but as I've already devoted a whole week to the cleanse, I'm not about to quit now! Wish me luck!

  • 2 weeks later...

Hope you made it through your trip to New Jersey without any hitches.  I can't believe it is Day 16!   I have stuck to it completely--quite a feat for me from my usual navigation through "diets".  I like that I'm not feeling hungry.  You're good--I "cheated" and got on the scales.  I am down about xx pounds, so that has made me feel like I can tackle two more weeks.  Good luck!

Please please please hide the scale for the rest of your Whole30.  I have edited your post to remove the weight loss you listed, as it is a rule not to weigh yourself.

Focus on non-scale victories instead to motivate you as you go through the process.

Whoops.  Guess I better get off the scales!  I have been 100% compliant in everything else for a full 21 days so far and have every intention of keeping at it for another 9--at least.  That is such a HUGE accomplishment for me.  So the scale thing is my only slip, but when I start feeling clothes fitting better it is darn hard not to see what the result is, so if that is my only gaffe in this whole process, I am good with that--but I'll keep that info to myself.
