newbie-whole30
My first post and whole 30. I'm asian and I always have rice with meals, which was the hardest thing to adjust to but I've been off and on with Intermittent Fasting also. So this isn't nearly as bad but I think the intermittent fasting helped me adjust. After day 1, it wasn't bad at all. Day 2 morning, I was light headed for a good 30 - 60 minutes. Hunger under control but I have a question. I'm not sure if I'm cheating. So after I eat my breakfast.. typically steak and steamed brocolli I have a small small snack of grapes or banana about 2 hours after. Then I'm good until lunch and sometimes late lunch. Then I have dinner and again a small snack of grapes or banana. I've read somewhere that eating sweets like grapes or a banana satisfies your sugar dragon and therefore defeats the whole30 program. Is that true? My meal portions are pretty much following the whole 30 meal template.
Moderators ShannonM816 Posted August 22, 2015 Moderators Share Posted August 22, 2015 It's best not to eat fruit on its own, because it can cause sugar cravings, and it can cause a spike and then drop in blood sugar as well. Have it with your meals instead. Ideally, your meals will keep you satisfied for 4-5 hours. If they're not, you may need to eat more -- maybe more in general, maybe more fat, it's hard to say just based on what you've listed here. If you're truly hungry between meals, ideally you'd have a mini meal of protein, fat, and vegetables, or at least two of those three. For each meal, aim for: 1-2 palm-sized portions of protein (length, depth, and width of your palm) 1-2 thumb-sized servings of fat (or a heaping handful of olives or coconut flakes, or 1/2 to a whole avocado, or a small handful of nuts/seeds) -- don't count your cooking fats, as much of those stays in the pan 1-3 cups of vegetables up to two servings of fruit a day, with meals
newbie-whole30
Hi ShannonM816, Ok that's what I thought. Thank you very much for your insight. Does that mean I should start over my Whole30? Seems like I've been feeding my craving with those fruits since I'm not really hungry when I eat them. Just something sweet to please the palette. Moderators ShannonM816 Posted August 22, 2015 Moderators Share Posted August 22, 2015 No, you don't have to start over, since you haven't eaten anything that's against the rules. Just work on improving things going forward.

Seems like I've been feeding my craving with those fruits since I'm not really hungry when I eat them. Just something sweet to please the palette. If you're looking for something to cleanse the palette after a meal you could try going down the pickled route immediately after your meal which works just as well as fruit - a couple of mouthfuls of sauerkraut, some pickled onions, or dill pickles.... Or a lot of folk actually just clean their teeth as a signal to their brain to say 'Okay, I'm done with eating for now'
