My husband and I are both excited and nervous about this lifestyle change, but I noticed that some of the different items listed are only available in the US.  Is there anyone out there that is living in Canada, specifically in Ontario and would be able to give some shopping advice?

Hi, I am in Quebec (Montreal) We are shopping at COSTCO. Just bought freezer full of meat (steaks, ground beef, ground turkey) and fish also Nuk smoked salmon (Whole 30 compliant) I am not investing in Coconut Aminos. I am using potato starch as a binder, so no coconut flour.

I haven't made any broths yet. I have compliant veggie broth.

I also live not far from Plattsburgh, so we recently made a trip, took the ferry to So Burlington, VT and stocked up at Trader Joes.

Do u live near the US border It may be worth a trip.

I also found things like duck fat at IGA EXTRA It's a great store.

I hope this helps

I am also starting August 31st.  My book should arrive tomorrow and I am very excited, but also nervous.  I've started cutting out sugars and grains, although I am already gluten-free.  Dairy might be the tough one because I love cheese and have to have creamer in my coffee.  I am hoping the book has lots of recipes!  I have already started my shopping list and am prepared to make a big pot of veggie soup to help get me through the first week.  Have any of you read the timeline? I found it helpful to have an idea of how my mind and body will react.

 Which book did you order?

It Starts with Food has some recipes, as it mostly describes the science behind the Whole30 program.

The Whole30 has lots more recipes and is more focused on how to conduct a Whole30.

I live in the UK and a lot of the items (coconut aminos etc) are not available here without stupid amounts of shipping. I just buy meat, fish, shellfish, eggs, butter (to make ghee), vegetables, tinned tomatoes, coconut milk, olive oils (light and extra virgin), goose fat etc. I make ghee every couple of weeks and Mayo every few days.

you don't need all the extra bits ;)

Chris, I ordered The Whole 30.  It appears to be more like an instruction manual, which i definately need!  And the recipes are a bonus!!  I've been reading a lot on the website so I am aware of what I am getting myself into.

Anybody else excited?  My husband even agreed to help plan meals.  Of course he refuses to give up bread and pasta, but he might change his mind.

Hi Sorbom,

Good Luck.

FYI, my husband and I were big bread and pasta eaters... not anymore and really don't miss it.  In fact for me, it feels like poison now, being how wonderful I feel by NOT having them.   Just thought I would share.

I'm in the GTA and have found coconut flour easily as well as coconut aminos @ the local health food store. I'm grateful that this plan doesn't require a lot of unusual purchases...it's only day 1 so we will see how things go!

Thanks everyone for the ideas and help!  I managed to find a local butcher in Waterloo that has sugar free and nitrate free bacon (yippee)!!  It's not cheap, but it's straight from the farm and flash frozen due to no preservatives.  My biggest struggle will be from breakfast - I'm a cereal girl, so I'm always on the search for breakfast ideas.  I do have a new question, trying to find balsamic vinegar without sulphites.  Any Canadian brands?  I live in Waterloo, Ontario, so about 2 hours to Buffalo and 2 1/2 hours to Detroit; that means US shopping isn't a viable option. - THANKS!!

I was a big cereal girl (everyday with a banana) don't miss it at all. This morning I had chopped eggs made with my mayo, compliant mustard, and tarragon; salmon fish cake, ratatouille and home made Cole slaw. Much more healthy than cereal and more substantial and delish. We have become more creative you will too good luck

Whole Foods 365 Balsamic Vinegar (of Modena) is compliant. Ingredients are: Wine Vinegar, Concentrated Grape Must. While there may be better options, I checked and this is compliant and should be available in Canada. Depending on how you are using you might also want to consider Apple Cider Vinegar. I have replaced balsamic in a number of places with this.

Hope your first day is going well. So far so good for me. Expecting the headache to come tomorrow.

I started today and it has gone well except for this afternoon. I got really hungry about 2:30 so I did have a small handful of almonds. I know you are not supposed to snack but it got me through to dinner just fine. Maybe I did not eat a big enough lunch?

We don't want you to snack mindlessly. It's completely ok to eat if you're genuinely hungry between meals. (Litmus test: you could eat something bland like steamed fish and broccoli.) In that scenario, we recommend a mini-meal of protein, carb and fat or at least two of those components. Nuts are a fat on a Whole30.

For best results, build meals of protein, veg and fat that satiate you for 4-5 hours, beginning with the first meal within an hour of waking. Use this meal template as your guide. http://whole30.com/downloads/whole30-meal-planning.pdf

Thought I would check in and see how everyone on this thread is doing so far. I hope all is going well.

It has not been too bad yet for me (I think giving up Diet Coke about a month and a half before starting helped) although I have definitely found myself sleepy at certain strange parts of the day. Folks at my office have been very supportive but I know that I am going to have some upcoming days that will be more challenging. So far, I feel my environment has been relatively controlled but I have a few social events coming up where I am working on a strategy for how to try to handle.

That sounds yummy!

Glad the first week went well - mine did as well although today was definitely a more challenging day for me. Waited to long between breakfast and lunch as I went out for a long walk. Learned that I should bring a snack with me on long walks just in case they go further than expected.

Here is to a great week 2 for everyone!

Hi Everyone

I started last Monday also, and to be honest I'm feeling fine. I think I had a relatively healthy diet beforehand so that helps.  My biggest problem has been breakfast on the days that I work out. I've been most successful with an apple and almond butter prior to exercise and eggs with avocado after.  I do seem to need a snack around 4 no matter what I do.  I've actually felt so good that I wonder if I'm doing something wrong but besides forgetting that tamari is made with soy sauce I don't think I have.  Hope it keeps up for me!

Note that the pre workout recommendation is protein and fat, no fruit (nuts are a fat in a Whole30), and post workout is protein and optional carby vegetable. Whole eggs and avocado are not the best post wo choice, as the egg yolk is a fat and the avocado is a fat.

If you make these changes and still feel the need to snack around 4, that typically indicates your previous meals are not big enough. Feel free to post a few days of your food and beverages in the Troubleshooting section, and we can take a look for possible tweaks.http://forum.whole9life.com/forum/19-troubleshooting-your-whole30/
