northwoodsmom8
Hi, today is day 6 of Whole30 and I'm loving how mentally alert I feel and how I'm able to stay focused on tasks which I haven't been able to do for quite some time. I woke up this morning grumpy and headachey. Also, **feeling** like this is one more thing I'm going to try that isn't going to work! I know--totally negative and hopeless. I read a post of a woman that had done the whole 30 days and hadn't lost anything. But I press on and hopefully I will lose some weight, plus feel better physically. My breakfast was DELICIOUS: Red onion, mushrooms and spiralized zucchini sautéed in coconut oil and then scrambled eggs into it with some salsa, side serving of cantaloupe, fermented veggies [homemade fermented cabbage], and my coffee with homemade almond milk and a little coconut oil. Mmmmmmmm! Candida! Anyone else have a severe case? Healing? My doctor says it will be a year before I'm "healed". She has me on a 3 month anti-fungal to "put out the fire" but I'm not feeling any relief yet after 2 weeks on the meds. I feel desperate to feel better. Thanks for stopping by--northwoodsmom8
GFChris
Hang in there. Candida can take a while to heal. Try not to worry about weight right now, and instead on nourishing your body and noticing non-scale victories as you go through the process. A gentle reminder that this is a 30 day program: http://whole30.com/2014/01/whole30-tough-love/ I had candida years ago, and my doctor put me on a strict anti-candida food diet, along with probiotics, for 3 months: did your doctor do the same? Many of the eliminated items at that time, coincidentally, are also disallowed on the Whole30. In addition, I recall one of the things I couldn't have during that time was vinegar. You? northwoodsmom8
GFChris--How VERY tender with your words you are! I appreciate the gentle reminder and for being so kind! Yes, I started with a 7-day intensive probiotic then started the other probiotic. Also, the fermented veggies are supposed to help my gut with lots and lots of probiotics. My doctor recommended going gluten free and possibly dairy free--those were her only recommendations on diet changes. I will do more reading and research about a candida diet--even apple cider vinegar with the "mother" isn't recommended? Again, thank you for reminding me to be patient--Rome wasn't built in a day, right!
MeadowLily
A Whole 30 is only 30 days but as GFChris says, it may take longer than 30 days to get the positive results you want. It's taken me several more days.
northwoodsmom8
MeadowLily, Thank you so much! I just need to take one day at a time. I actually had a good day and my headache left quickly!
cottagequeen
I too had issues with candida, it took me a whole100 to kick it's butt. I did eat some fermented foods and drank kombucha the whole 100. So maybe it wouldn't have taken as long.... but I don't regret doing a whole100. northwoodsmom8
cottagequeen--Thank you for your post! You are giving me hope! Ironically, I had been thinking maybe I should do Whole90--3 rounds of Whole30. We'll see how I feel in two weeks.

Hey @GFChris, I hope you see this message as this is an old post. My wife took a stool sample test with her doctor and they found a high count of candida yeast in her gut. She put her on the Whole30 diet (for 90 days), put her on Diflucan (a strong anti-fungal) for 21 days, herbal anti-fungal for the rest of the diet, and Milk Thistle to help counter-act the adverse effect that anti-fungal medication can have on the liver. We're on day 23 right now. We're getting a little discouraged that this will actually re-balance her gut flora (yeast vs good bacteria) so she can go back to eating somewhat normally again. It's hard to even find people doing the Whole30 diet because of candida yeast overgrowth. I read your post and it sounded like you had a really similar story. Wonder if you can share your story a little more in-depth and how you felt after the 90 days?

Wonder if you can share your story a little more in-depth and how you felt after the 90 days? All I remember, since this happened almost 10 years ago, was how relieved I felt when I was done with the 3 months of eating the candida diet. I don't recall feeling any differently than beforehand, but I didn't feel badly beforehand either. This was part of a series of several medical avenues we took after I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis several months prior. The biggest thing that helped me, digestive-wise, was getting off gluten. Shortly after completing the candida diet, I had a stool test that showed I was gluten-sensitive. Since then, I've been militant about keeping gluten out of my diet.
