tracy h
Seriously. That's how I feel. I did a Whole30 last September and don't remember feeling so grouchy, but it's more than possible that I have blocked it from my own memory, so my brain forgot how painful it was...kind of like childbirth (or so I've heard). Meals have been good, breakfasts have been 2 jumbo eggs with about 2 C of veggies and a chicken sausage, scrambled...and coffee with coconut milk of course. Satisfies me for hours. Lunch has been 2 deviled eggs (yolks mashed with ACV, avocado oil, French's, and a chopped compliant pickle). Maybe some grapes too. Dinners have been poached chicken with sauteed veggies (Trader Joe's Healthy 8 mix (finely chopped broccoli, jicama, green pepper, green and purple cabbage, carrots, celery and something else that I forgot), red onions, and halved cherry tomatoes), topped with alfalfa sprouts, half a chopped avocado, and a dressing I make from ACV, French's, and avocado oil, all mixed together in a bowl. A piece of fruit after dinner. Water and water and water and water... But the last two days...I seriously want to hurt someone. I also want to stay cooped up in my apartment and not speak to anyone except my dogs. And this weekend I have eaten Lara bars at an alarming rate...And now I have to go to a Labor Day BBQ where I can simultaniously annoy/offend/bore the hosts telling them what I can eat and why I can't eat 90% of what is there...Also, last time I was on the Whole30 I don't remember alcohol (or lack of) being a big deal, but this time I want to cry thinking about a large glass of Pinot Grigio and an Ultra Light Parliament...and I'm not even really a smoker. Also, I feel like I've gained 20 lbs in a week. On another note...Anyone have any good recipes for crock pot buffalo chicken?
Physibeth
First off take some deep calming breathes. 2 things really strike me. Your second meal is really light. 2 deviled eggs is not enough protein and a pickle is not enough vegetables. Make your 2nd meal fit the template as your 1st and 3rd meal are. The second thing that strikes me is I don't see much starchy vegetables. We recommend 1 fist sized portion of a starchy vegetable a day at a minimum. The cravings for Lara Bars and your mood lead me to believe you need more. Bloating is quite normal at this stage in your Whole30 so try not to stress about that. Not sure about the recipe. Tessemaes sells a compliant buffalo sauce though and I've made chicken in my crock pot before by pouring bbq sauce, buffalo sauce, or tomato sauce over frozen chicken breasts (several pounds) and letting it cook on low for 6-8 hours. tracy h
Hmmm OK. Perhaps I will add a baked sweet potato to my lunch. I have half a zucchini every AM in my eggs, so there's a bit of starch there, but prob not enough to sustain me. Prob is, I'm really not too hungry between meals (my bfast is on the late side, and dinner is on the early side). But if it keeps the sugar dragon AKA Lara bars away, I'm down. The other thing is, I work at a bar Saturdays and Sundays, where last Whole30 I didn't. It has become a ritual to get home late Saturday night and have a glass or two of wine, and maybe a cigarette or two. This was the first weekend of Whole 30 and the first time ever working while being on it. Every customer annoyed the sh*t out of me, and I didn't have my glass of wine to look forward to to decompress. Also, I work all day Sunday, and it can be pretty slow. So usually I snack (we have an atached restaurant). Hence the Lara bars I had brought with me. And because I'm wanting alcohol, the sugar beast is twice as large as before. I'm SURE this will pass, but right now...GRRRRRRRR. I'm thinking maybe 4 (?) frozen chicken breasts, Franks Red Hot, a can of coconut milk, set on low for 6 hours? Gross or could be great? Brewer5
Zucchini is very (very) low-carb and really does not count as starch. In your situation -- having to be surrounded by alcohol, trying not to smoke, and absolutely not wanting to resort to Larabars (these will make your blood sugar go crazy -- you will have a high, then you will have a crash, then you will want another), I would recommend a potato with every meal. I think this may be the first time EVER that I have recommended that to someone here. But I completely understand where you're at right now, and I really think it will help. At the very least, remember carbs = calming. If you need to be mentally sharp, like for a test or something -- that would be a BAD time to eat a bunch of carbs. If you need to deal with customers and not be a pissed off mess -- umm, yes. Carbs.
chezjulie
I agree that starchy carbs will help. And maybe if your breakfast is seriously on the late side with your dinner seriously on the early side, you could do a fourth mini-meal of protein, carbs, and fat to make sure you're eating enough every day. (Moderator Tom used to eat more than three meals a day when he started the Whole30). You have almost a full week before you have to work at the bar, so hopefully you won't be still thinking "kill all the things!" by then. Since you're used to visualizing your non-compliant treat while you work (and I get where you're coming from!) maybe there's something else you can plan for after work. I know it won't replace the drink and smoke, but it might give you something to visualize besides things you can't have. Like a bubble bath, or a pitcher of fruit infused water, or having your bed made with jammies laid out, or an episode of Parks and Rec cued up on Netflix, whatever you might look forward to. (I know TV is not ideal before bed).
Physibeth
Can you share the timing of your meals on a typical day with relation to when you wake and when you go to sleep? Is there any wiggle room in timing?
tracy h
Hey! So it's now day 9 and I feel like a different person! I switched my breakfast around to add a bit more fat and some starch, I'm also making it just a smidgen smaller so I can fit a better lunch in there...Labor day, which I was dreading, ended up being lovely. My friends were wonderful taking precautions for my Whole30, so I spent the day playing with their 3 year old and grazing on chicken kabobs, grilled veggies, wings and fruit salad (and they packed me some great leftovers too!). I also have started going to the gym (which I had NO energy for during the 1st week), which has helped SO MUCH. Last night I had a meeting at a restaurant that has amazing food and cocktails (and the BEST french fries!) and I was fine sipping black iced coffee while everyone else indulged. And I didn't even get mad at them! Progress! I now see a light at the end of the tunnel!! Not quite to Tigers Blood, maybe Baby Kitten Blood. KerleyL
Today is day #6 and I've been dragging since I started this. Hoping it turns around soon. I've done pretty darn good so far, besides sacking. I am having Whole30 compliant of course. Love coconut chips, and I do have a handful, sometimes 2, of mixed nuts. Bearika
This is inspirational. I'm on day 3 and missing the alcohol as well. Hopefully this gets easier.
tracy h
So, today is day 16!!! Alcohol no longer crosses my mind, and the sugar dragon is at bay! Energy levels are up, and so is my outlook on life! Anyone who is struggling, keep on keepin on, I swear it just naturally evens itself out! If you have to have that extra piece of fruit or Lara bar or whatever so you don't go crazy, I say have at it! One day soon you'll go to bed and realize..."hmm...I didn't eat a piece of fruit after dinner. Weird." Not weird- you just stop thinking about it after a while, same goes for alcohol! Know that it DOES get better!! KEEP IT UP!!!!!!
KerleyL
Anyone experience being in a real fog, even on day 8? it seems to be getting worse, not better. It's really bothering me. Hope someone has encouraging words, or the reason why.
KerleyL
Safeway and Whole Foods sell a brand called Tessemae's! Not all the dressings are Whole 30 compliant but a lot of them are. My favorites are the southwestern ranch and zesty ranch! I looked at Safeway and Whole Foods and couldn't find this dressing. I can get it on Amazon, but the shipping is like $10. That's too much. It's really bothering me. Hope someone has encouraging words, or the reason why. Could you list a couple of days' worth of food, including approximate portion sizes, exercise, water intake, and sleep? Maybe there's something you could change that would make a difference. Are you eating enough? In an earlier post you mentioned snacks -- if you're truly hungry between meals and need a snack, that's a sign that your meals may not be big enough (unless you have those super long days where, if you eat every 4-5 hours, you end up needing to eat 4 meals -- in that case, just plan to eat four full meals, or three meals and a mini meal, depending on how your schedule works). Also be sure you're eating at least one fist-sized serving of starchy vegetables each day. Aim to drink 1/2 oz of water per pound of body weight (so if you weigh 120 lbs, drink at least 60 oz). Salt your food to taste. Be sure you're adding fat at each meal, in addition to what you're cooking in. I looked at Safeway and Whole Foods and couldn't find this dressing. I can get it on Amazon, but the shipping is like $10. That's too much. Did you check in the produce section? It's refrigerated. It's cheaper just to make your own, though, even if you find it in stores. The Clothes Make The Girl has some good dressing recipes -- I particularly like her Zingy Ginger Dressing. I had zero energy and was super irritable until about the 10th or so, dragging my ass to the gym was the hardest thing ever, but once I did, it was easier to go the next day and so on, until I suddenly had a lot of energy and just felt great! Jac Rock
Can anyone tell me what these Lara Bar things are and why they are allowed? Is there an Australian equivalent?
Brewer5
Can anyone tell me what these Lara Bar things are and why they are allowed? Is there an Australian equivalent? They are bars made from dried fruit & nuts. But mainly dried fruit (dates). Full of sugar. Allowed because they are "technically" fruit & nuts. They are a real problem for most folks. I hope I live to see the day when the rule is changed. If you find an Australian equivalent -- run. Run far, far away.
tracy h
Can anyone tell me what these Lara Bar things are and why they are allowed? Is there an Australian equivalent? Yeah, what Brewer5 said. They are total sugar bomb snacks. BUT...they got me through some dark days in the beginning, so I don't necessarily think they're a bad thing, as long as you eventually see them for what they are. I've had a few in my cupboard that I don't even think about because the sugar beast just pretty much went away. I guess what I'm saying, at least for me, is that the novelty wears off, and you start seeing them like candy bars and make the decision to stay away. Now if I need something quick because I'm running out the door or whatever, I generally reach for a banana.

I'd also add that whilst technically compliant they are for emergency use only - like you've been stuck in a queue for nigh on 8hrs for a one in a million chance to spend the entire day/night with Dave Drool, sorry, I mean Grohl*, you've run out of food, and if you move you'll lose your prime spot in the line type of emergency... If you're snacking you're not eating enough at each meal, and if you can plan for an emergency you can plan to have real food. *If it helps you can switch Dave up for any other celeb you'd fancy spending some time with
