Allia
Hey! I started this just to document how my reintroduction goes. Today I am doing legumes. I didn't have legumes until M3 a few minutes ago when I had 1/3 to 1/2 cup of boiled pinto beans. They were soaked overnight though, so I don't know if any reaction I have will be legitimate. I'm a bit confused though. How do I know what counts as a bad reaction? Some days I'm just tired/stressed and I don't know if anything I feel will be a placebo effect or not. Moderators Tom Denham Posted September 10, 2015 Moderators Share Posted September 10, 2015 Congrats on making it to reintroductions! It might help to think of your reintroductions as preliminary research. If you get a notable response to eating beans, you will know that you probably have an issue with them. If you don't really notice any issues, you can assume that legumes might be okay, subject to further testing in the future.
Allia
Thanks! After trying pinto beans I noticed my throat and tongue became itchy and the next morning, I got nausea and cramps. I don't know if these are possible reactions.
chezjulie
That sounds like it could be a reaction to the pinto beans to me.
jmcbn
Yep, any itching/burning of the lips, tongue or throat might indicate oral allergy syndrome.
Allia
Yep. I got nauseous the next morning and felt really bloated. I'm planning on doing soy tomorrow, but miniature how to reincorporate soy milk. I thought we weren't supposed to drink food.
jmcbn
Yep. I got nauseous the next morning and felt really bloated. I'm planning on doing soy tomorrow, but miniature how to reincorporate soy milk. I thought we weren't supposed to drink food. Has the nausea gone? Are you feeling 'normal'? If you're not then hold off on the soy until you are... As for drinking the soy that's fine in this instance as it's only a food trial & not meant to leave you satiated in the same way that your three meals a day should. That said you could try something like tofu? Or soy sauce? It all depends on what you've reintro'ed so far and have had success with as to whether or not you could try soy mixed with something else. The idea of a separate reintro day for soy is that many people tolerate most other beans but not soy - it's high on the list of allergens - but given that you've already reacted to the beans you might find you'll also react to the soy as they're part of the same family. Allia
Yes, I was feeling non-nauseous the day before! As for drinking, hmm, I'm not sure if this makes sense, but I have a feeling that it depends under what circumstance it's drunk. In my family we always used to drink unsweetened soy milk like a sort of soup, in a small bowl. I just had tofu in an omelet since we already had that at home haha. As for soy sauce, I thought most brands also had gluten - would that be confusing for reintros? I'd like to test soy separately though, as I only tried one type of legume. Maybe the reaction feels different for soy.
Allia
Update: I don't... really feel itching after the tofu. Hm. Maybe a little. This is really weird! I wonder if I was just mistaken for the beans, then... I don't want to take the hassle retesting! I guess I'll see how I feel after edamame! I would also really want peanuts to be part of my diet later on, but then I would have to test that separately! D: After legumes I would like to try dairy, which I'll separate into two sessions: high-lactose (milk) and low-lactose (cheese, sour cream, yogurt, whey protein). I wonder if it's "bad" to consume non-Whole30 ingredients as part of my everyday diet later on.
jmcbn
As for soy sauce, I thought most brands also had gluten - would that be confusing for reintros? Most do, yes, but naturally fermented soy sauces such as Kikkoman meet the requirement to be labelled gluten free.
Allia
I see! I have some gas/bloating issues right now as well as an uncomfortable throat. I think I will not have soy at M3 today (too uncomfortable) and maybe retest soy at a later date. This feels terrible! :x
Allia
My throat is all better! Tomorrow I think I will test the higher lactose form of dairy, aka milk. I don't plan on consuming milk later on, like plain milk, but ice cream might be a possibility in social situations so it's useful to know! Also I'd like to just know more about myself
Allia
I tried the milk yesterday, and it gave me a headache. At least, I think it might have given me a headache. As soon as I consumed it, my head hurt! I drank it two times a day. I first drank a cup and had my head hurt for the whole morning and afternoon. Then I drank half a cup later on, and my head hurt in the same way but for less time. Are these possible reactions to milk? I wonder if I tolerate all dairy products this way. Allia
Just reintroduced rice yesterday. I don't know - I felt sort of bloated and in pain afterwards, but I'm not quite sure why! I don't know if it's the effect of the rice or not.
GFChris
Just reintroduced rice yesterday. I don't know - I felt sort of bloated and in pain afterwards, but I'm not quite sure why! I don't know if it's the effect of the rice or not. If rice is the only off-plan food you reintroduced, then that pretty much points to the rice as the culprit. Allia
If rice is the only off-plan food you reintroduced, then that pretty much points to the rice as the culprit. The problem is that sometimes I might feel randomly less comfortable than usual and I am not sure if it's cause of the rice or something else e.e
Allia
Ughh, feeling really constipated and enema doesn't work. Could someone please critique my meals in the "Troubleshooting" forum? I don't want to be annoying by posting it here.
Allia
Update! After trying oxtail broth, Smooth Move tea, and some cascara sagrada pills later I can say that I feel cleaned out. I have not yet found a legitimate solution to my digestive problems. I've tried magnesium, drinking more water, and even enemas and none of these three work. I think I'll try peanuts tomorrow, but soaked before eaten. I realize I already did legumes, but I've only tried soy and pinto beans. I hope peanuts are better. Allia
I had no reaction (noticeable yet) to peanuts. That is strange, as I have itchiness from soy and pinto beans. I wonder if I will have reactions to other beans.
Allia
Happy October! So far, gluten, cheese, whey, and butter: no reaction. So glad I'm almost done with reintroductions.
Allia
Hello! Okay so I've thought a lot about my reactions and I have a certain idea about grains: After eating rice I get constipated and bloated. After eating crackers I felt much more tired than usual. But I at that time was always constipated and I didn't get much sleep that day anyway. Moreover it was *white* rice and *refined* crackers... I think I have a bad digestive reaction to refined-grain, super starchy products. This does not mean I should avoid them, but rather that if I do consume them, I must balance it out with adequate fiber. It also does not mean that I am bad with specifically grains. Tapioca starch or potato starch would likely cause the same thing since my reactions seem more to do with the refined nature of the material rather than a gluten intolerance. Rice is super hypoallergenic anyways. So a bit of this sort of starch is okay, as long as I balance with fats and/or to make my digestion going-as is naturally done in starchy vegetables with fiber. It will probably be no difference whether I thicken with tapioca starch or with cornstarch or with rice starch.
Allia
I can't do this anymore alone. I decided to get help from others about my issues today! Talking about my worries with others was really helpful I realized I don't have a reaction to pure wheat gluten. So I will test fermented soy along with soy protein isolates on the same day on Sunday, and then I'll be done, finally. What I realized about Whole30 is that it is not a sustainable and flexible way personally for me to eat. I'm glad it helped me find out an oral allergy to soy/some legumes, but aside from that, I find it unnecessary to eliminate other things from my daily diet. I cannot fit enough food down my throat in one sitting, just to eat an amount of food that's probably less than what people eat here every day. Aside from this I must say I will take a short leave from the forums after this week. Whole30 made me too stressed to take care of my body well and yeah :x
missmary
Whole30 made me too stressed to take care of my body well and yeah :x Good for you Allia. I'm glad you recognized that you needed to get some in-person help, and if the whole30 was making you too stressed to take care of your body you are absolutely 100% right in stopping. I'm so so glad for you. Best Wishes.
