Well, the Brits are ending day 1 right about now!!!  I'm starting today as well.  This is my second Whole 30.  The first one was in January - and I was pretty miserable.  My poor body had years of abuse, antibiotics, antimalarials, standard american diet, splenda, fat-free foods bla bla bla.  It went into shock the first time it experienced coconut oil.  I had nausea and deep fatigue nearly the entire time.  I stayed with it (complaining every day - what a misery!).  Then there was this fluke in my blood tests - my rheumatologist said my ana came back negative. (for those of you with Lupus or other autoimmune disorders you know what I'm talking about).  After the 30 days, I stayed gluten and dairy free - and no processed foods.  I somehow had the energy to begin exercising again.  At my 6 month check up, I was taken off all Lupus meds.  I no longer have any markers for Lupus.  (I was diagnosed in 2007).  My rheumatoligist says I'm in remission.  A functional medicine specialist says I had a gluten intolerance.  Sad to say, I've not lost weight and my body hasn't changed - although it truly needs it.  But, I'm healthy and disease free and IT STARTS WITH FOOD.  Nonetheless, these last few weeks I (did I tell you I am not very smart???) decided to test the waters.  Pizza.  Cheese.  Ice Cream. Cake. Bread.  Processed foods.  Vats of wine.  Craving a chicago hot dog.  (damn, forgot to have one before I started).  I needed a nap every day for the last several days, had no energy, barely made it through mild strength training class, exhausted yet disturbed sleep. etc etc.  Back on track today and glad to be starting with this group.  I've been doing "ad hoc" Whole 30 for months now - don't remember what it said about snacking.  I'm hungry and it's too early for lunch.  Suggestions???

The recommendation is not to snack, but we don;t want you to be hungry - so.... if you're genuinely hungry, rather than wanting to eat out of habit or boredom try to have at least two of the three macronutrients (so fat & carb, fat & protein, or protein & carb). Don't be eating fruit on it's own as a snack as it will play havoc wth blood sugars & appetite... If you don't have anything to eat then try a glass of water, or a herbal tea.... and tomorrow make sure to increase the size of your breakfast so as you don't find yourself in the same position again.

Hi Everyone!  I started my 1st Whole 30 today as well.  I was Paleo for about 2.5 years a few years back, and am hoping the Whole 30 will be a good 'jump-start' back into a much healthier lifestyle again.  I'm from Portland, OR, and have not been able to enjoy all of my favorite activities (hiking, biking, jogging, etc) as much as I used to, and that's my ultimate goal throughout all of this.  I want to be healthy and active again, and not feel restricted from my favorite activities due to being overweight, out of shape, and lack of energy.  I'm very motivated, and can't wait to see how the Whole 30 will get this new journey started for me!

My breakfast of an egg/veggie frittata wasn't a bad way to start it off :)

First day is almost done here in Fort Worth, TX!  Breakfast and lunch went smoothly and looking forward to dinner (perfect seared chicken on a salad).

I have started an Instagram to track my progress and keep myself accountable, please follow along! @allyson_whole30  So awesome seeing I am not the only one starting today, hopefully we can keep this going to share tips/tricks and encourage one another!

According to the timeline tomorrow is "the Hangover" so not looking forward to it, already planning on having my favorite zoodles to cheer me up!

Day 1 went surprisingly well! No snacking! Didn't feel I needed it. Tracked my water intake closely. Wow, I wasn't getting nearly enough before. Didn't have to leave the house today which was helpful. My big weaknesses are picking up a Coke or getting a candy bar when I'm out. I hope everyone achieved their goals today....and get a good night sleep!

I started off ok with black coffee with a touch of compliant almond milk, compliant bacon and a banana. Then quite ill thru most of day. I cant eat eggs, but decided to take chance on bacon, having no gall bladder you are supposed to watch fats. I would like to hear what everyone is having for breakfast that doesnt involve eggs or bacon. Otherwise I had already cooked "chili" and "stew" for dinners, and they taste great. My hardest thing to give up was soda's and cream in coffee. Preparing meals ahead is a really great idea. Good luck everyone!

You need to stop thinking in terms of breakfast, lunch & dinner, and start thinking in terms of meals one, two & three - that way you can eat anything you'd at in the evening in the morning too... Take a look at this thread for some inspiration, and remember that bacon is a fat on Whole30, and fruit should not be pushing veg off of your plate - particularly in the morning having fasted overnight as it will likely cause a spike in blood sugar leading to a crash later in the day (along with lack of focus, fatigue, faux hunger etc etc etc....)

really interested to hear how everyone was feeling at the end of day one? must admit that by the evening i felt really sick, and could only bring myself to have a tiny bowl of scrambled eggs for tea before crawling into bed...

going to try a plainer lunch today and see if that makes a difference, it's a miserable day here in London though and it's making me crave a massive hot chocolate.

I'm starting today for another whole30, or a complete whole30.  I have done a complete whole30 in the past.  I did a whole15 starting towards the end of august, but have been on a 2 week break.  I knew I was only going to do a whole15 when I started that one due to traveling for 2 weddings two weekends in a row and by birthday in there too.. but I was very very bad!  And I did not feel well eating all that bad food so not sure why I do it to myself!

Anyhow, starting fresh today, for a full 30 days this time!  Hubs is starting too.

Also, one of my big goals this time is to really get some dedicated exercise in.  Past Whole30's (or whole15s), I got very little exercise in because either I felt like I did not have enough energy or I was exhausted because I was always cooking!  But I really want to make an effort to exercise, even 30 minutes a day to start would be fantastic!

I know a lot of you started yesterday, but I figure today is close enough, so looking forward to following along with everyone!

Hey guys - yesterday I rocked it! Food was good/tasty except for one thing - I ate a lot of nuts (cashews, almonds) from a jar I bought a few days ago. I know the nuts were Whole30 compliant but I noticed that I was emotionally eating them, because it was well after 9pm. Any tips on how you curb your emotional eating?

@allyson- I just cant eat eggs, they make me really ill, but I do love my lunch and dinner foods. I made my own almond milk, but this morning I had hot tea and it was fine. It's just the no gall bladder and fat issue. But I will plod on. Glad we are all hanging in there. Since my big thing was ice cream in the evening in the past, I switched to Italian ices, and had found one that was a good substitute, very tasty but tons of sugars. So on this diet I put fresh blueberries, strawberries and a touch of compliant apple juice, and a banana in the blender, then measured out in plastic cups, covered them and put in freezer. That way in the evening I can enjoy them just like the Italian ices and its not too bad.

Find yourself a new habit that occupies the hands and the mind - lots of members are into crafting, but you could start researching your geneaology, or try some adult colouring books....

Yeah, I would keep these in the freezer for the duration of your Whole30.   While they contain compliant ingredients, you're using this as a substitute for Italian ice (which was subbing for ice cream).

For the same reason we don't permit frozen bananas sent through a blender to mimic ice cream on a Whole30, I would say this sort of concoction would be off-limits as well. Further, fruit juice is to be used only as a sweetener in savory cooking - not to make a desserty treat.

Keep in mind one of the purposes of the Whole30 is to change your relationship with food.

Successful day 2! I'm so glad to be sticking with this with you all! I was sooooooo tempted to buy a darn fountain Coke at the store. So glad I didnt! I hope you're all doing great. You can do it! If I can avoid caving in for a Coke.....YOU can avoid your temptations too!

@GFChris,  while changing my relationship with food is one of the reasons I have started this challenge, I would also say most important to me is to take dairy, gluten, sugars and processed foods out of my diet. I don't want to defeat myself with making it such an insurmountable challenge that I give up before I can get through the initial 30 days. I take comfort in knowing that the foods I eat are compliant, even though I am exchanging a frozen fruit for a non-frozen one. I am trying to just make it through to the end of the 30 with as few stomach aches as possible, because eating meats is hard for my stomach to digest without the gall bladder to break down the fats. I will try my best one day at a time.

Just wrapping up day 2 here in Eugene. It's been a whirlwind at work so I've been reading the posts as they filter into my email but haven't been able to post. Yesterday went fine. Started the day with scrambled eggs in coconut oil, compliant bacon, and salsa. I had an avocado but discovered it was nowhere near ripe, so I subbed in some bell pepper. Then for lunch I had a spinach salad with grass-fed organic ground beef, and a few slices of bell pepper. For dinner I made spaghetti squash made with basil, some basic seasoning, coconut oil and more ground beef. Day 2 I started with spinach and bacon scrambled into my eggs with salsa on top. I work in the social service field and today was one for the books and filled with a lot of stress. Despite all the stress of the day, I refrained from digging into the HUGE jar of licorice sitting in the break room, so I'm celebrating that success. I tried to eat a little bit during lunchtime but was too busy and stressed, and not feeling hungry. So I didn't eat a lot, but had some of my leftover squash from the night before. I also have been dealing with shoulder and neck pain, so that has been another added stress. I did have some herbal tea to try to destress but someday just don't work in your favor. I had one of those days from the get-go. I stopped at a farm-stand with one of my clients and picked up some raspberries that I ended up snacking on a bit. For dinner my sweetheart grilled up some steak and we made mashed sweet potatoes. For my coffee I've been putting a bit of coconut oil and cinnamon in it. Which now that I'm typing this I'm not 100% sure that cinnamon is compliant... but I think/hope it is! If not, black coffee tomorrow and a learning experience from the last two days... Off to bed way early in hopes of waking up refreshed with no neck pain, and ready to tackle day 3. The first two days have already been trying (stress-wise) and I realllllly wish I could have some chocolate and wine.....

P.S. I also had nightmare like dreams that I was accidentally eating non-compliant foods. Not sure if its the worry of starting something new, just an odd dream, or brought on by the Tylenol PM I took. Either way, I thought it was odd and funny. :D
