Emma Risk
Hi, I'm heading off on a three day, two night hiking trip with friends who are not on the Whole30. I'm not sure what to take for meals - bearing in mind I will have to carry what I need to eat. I also don't have access to a dehydrator. Also a live in New Zealand so might not have some of the brands available in the US. I would welcome any suggestions. Thanks Emma
higs
Hi Emma! I had this same question last year when I did a Whole30 backpacking trip. Here's the thread: http://forum.whole9life.com/topic/21864-whole30-backpacking-trip/?hl=higs#entry230810 I'm afraid there are a few US-listed brands there, but since your trip isn't long you could still carry in eggs and avocados and that type of thing. In the US we're starting to get tuna in pouches instead of cans, which is really practical for backpacking. Mostly what I struggled with was finding enough veggies, and ended up getting a bunch of baby food packets that worked well. Have an awesome time! I would love to trek in New Zealand someday. missmary
I don't know if they ship internationally, but I used these on a recent backpacking trip and it worked out well: http://paleomealstogo.com The savory meals are whole30 compliant and taste clean and fresh for rehydrated food. If you try them, I would recommend bringing little containers of fat (olive oil, ghee or coconut oil would work) and sea salt to supplement. They provide a good amount of volume per serving but not enough fat or starch to meet energy needs on a high-mileage trip.
