Gluten Reintro - Anyone Had This Reaction?

Reintro-ed gluten yesterday and each time, immediately after I ate:

I got a headache that lasted for about a half hour

I felt out of it, almost kind of drunk or drugged, for about a half hour

My tummy was fine, but today I feel foggy and my joints ache. A little (TMI) constipated, but no other gastric issues

Obviously my body does not care for gluten, but it seemed so strange and so sudden, I thought I'd share and see if anyone else had these symptoms.

The gluten I ate was high-quality, organic bread (M1), pasta (M2) and pizza dough (M3) with no preservatives, etc.

Typical gluten sensitivity reaction. Since we have been 30 days without something, the reaction will occur quickly if at all. I have celiac disease and I had pretty much figured gluten was bad for me and cut it out before I was diagnosed. To be diagnosed, I had to eat gluten again for weeks and it was horrible. The test doesn't work if no gluten is present. You can be certain I won't be trying out that again!

  • 2 months later...

I'm wondering if what I experienced this morning is a gluten reaction. I'm on day 15 & have been feeling really great for about a week. Then after breakfast I got a headache, felt foggy & had a white-ish tongue, which I haven't had. Breakfast was usual and safe, but I made a beef stew last night in the crock pot and used a pre-made beef bullion. I tasted the stew broth this morning. No obvious red flags on the ingredients lable, but "organic caramel colour, organic flavour, natural flavour." I also mixed some amaranth flour with some stew broth to thicken it. Could the culprit be hiding in one of those? So interesting to experience my body's reaction so swiftly. and interestingly, I have a complete aversion to eating the stew now. Thanks for any insight.

Right. Thanks. I guess that fell into the pre-Whole 30 it's not corn starch so it must be healthy reflex category. Do you think it's possible that a taste--literally--of the stew broth with the amaranth mixed in could have provoked the headache/etc?

I think it's possible, if you are highly sensitive to any of those things.

This is why the Whole 30 completely excludes foods for 30 days -- to get a really clean slate for re-intro.   The picture gets a lot more cloudy if you are having things that aren't on the plan.

Just to clarify, are you 15 days post-Whole30 (as this is a reintroduction thread) or are you 15 days into your Whole30?

If you're currently doing a Whole30, caramel colour is out, as it's a sugar, and amaranth is out because it's a grain. As such, I'd suggest a restart, per this article

Thanks. 15 days in & see now the difference between re-introduction threads and others--this one seemed to come the closest to the query I had. I'm over whatever the effects were this morning. I felt so well prior that I'm not imagining this as a temporary practice. It's all a good experience--to remember that that my body is actually capable of telling me what's good and what's not if it's not numbed out from bombardments of possible inflammatory foods, that short-cut stuff like pre-made broth is probably questionable for me, that paleo recipe blogs are written by humans subject to the same kinds of gap thinking that I am ... With Christmas coming up I'm not sure I'll get to 30 again before the end of the holidays, but will re-ignite after if I can't. And in the meantime, will just keep going. Right now, with that experience under my belt, I'm in no hurry to experiment deliberately off the plan.
