My wife and I started Monday 9/28.

3 days in and I am excited and having fun finding ways to mix up the meals and learn new ways to cook.  I'm dreading when it starts to get difficult but am stubborn enough to see it through to the end.  We are both in our 40's and were daily alchohol users until 3 days ago.  For those of you in the same boat, what's more difficult?  The food change or the wagon?  Good luck and congrats to you all!!

There is a group of folks who started September 28th. Feel free to join them on their thread here

On your question, I did my first Whole30 a couple years ago. Prior to that, I drank wine probably about four days a week.  As a result of doing a Whole30, I've significantly dropped my wine consumption.  More like once a week, if that, these days.  I feel wine was a big contributor to my belly bloat.

Instead of focusing on the difficult aspects, I suggest instead noticing the Non-Scale Victories as you go through the process, along with all the delicious foods you're now eating. It will make the journey much more pleasant.  :)

Congrats on your journey... and on being stubborn!  :)  For me, the food change wasn't too difficult, but I did have to learn to always keep some kind of cooked protein, some kind of can-eat-it-off-a-spoon fat (mayo), and, most especially, some kind of blended vegetable soup in the fridge. At. All. Times. The veg soup comes in handy when I need to increase the veg content of a meal, or when I am feeling lazy, or when I am going to a restaurant where I know it will be impossible to get a whole bunch of delicious vegs in my meal. I grab a spoonful of (usually) mayo, heat my soup & put it in an insulated coffee mug, drink it on my way, and then as long as the restaurant has meat, I am good to go. And no longer hungry, so no feeling deprived. I have even attended meetings where everyone is drinking coffee, and I'm drinking soup.... but unless I share that news, everyone assumes I'm drinking coffee.

The daily alcohol thing though.... wine. Before supper. With hubby. Chatting about our day. A very powerful ritual. It took me a while to figure out that it really is not (really not!) the wine. It was the ritual. And as such, it is well within my power to have a new ritual. Check out Melissa Joulwan's site. She has some excellent advice for attending parties. Following her suggestions, I swapped out my wine for club soda with a lime twist & an olive on a toothpick. Very festive. Then I started keeping cucumber-infused water in the fridge. Also ginger-infused water. Sometimes lime-infused. While hubby has his glass of wine, I make myself a truly delicious treat using either just the flavor-infused water, or the infused water + club soda. My current favorite is the ginger-infused water with club soda. OMGDelicious!

As you go through your 30 days (and hopefully beyond) you will, as GFChris says, find things that just make your tummy happy, which in turn makes your whole body happy. I love the feeling of enjoying something truly delicious that is, at the same time, nourishing my body. I love the ritual of sharing a moment at the end of the day with my hubby, but I love, even more, going to bed without alcohol in my system, and waking up with a body that didn't have to spend the night processing that alcohol. Figure out what it is that you actually miss.... find something to replace it with that you like even better.... and enjoy the journey.

Good luck to you both.

Thank you both for the replies!  Love the support on this message board.  I have found so many new ideas and advice on the last 24 hours.  The infused sparkling water is a game changer!  Already found grapefruit and lemon.  Ginger and cucumber sound awesome as well.  I agree that it's not so much the joy of eating and drinking that is so challenging to change, but the "rituals" and social habits.  Going to bed and waking up sober and not recovering from eating bad food is whole new approach to my daily routine and is becoming my favorite part of this first week so far!
