jml1015
Hi there - I'm on Day 6 of my first Whole30, and things have been going pretty well so far. The only truly troubling thing I've encountered is that for the past 2-3 days, my teeth *constantly* feel "fuzzy" on their back/inside surface. Brushing and flossing do not help. I just had a professional cleaning less than two weeks ago, so I don't think there's actual plaque buildup, but I'm at a loss as to what's going on, how to fix it, and whether or not I should be concerned. Thoughts? Anyone else experienced this? I've searched the archives but couldn't find any conclusive responses. Thanks!
Administrators ladyshanny Posted October 7, 2015 Administrators Share Posted October 7, 2015 It's possible that you have inadvertently (or possibly on purpose) gone too low carb. Whole30 is inherently a lower carbohydrate plan just because we toss all the traditional sources of carbs. Are you eating at least a serving a day (fist sized) of a starchy veggie like potato, sweet potato, beet, carrot, winter squash, rutabaga, turnip etc? jml1015
Thanks for your reply - I am eating at least one starchy serving a day, but I'm also working out regularly, so perhaps I need to increase? I'm curious about the science behind why too-low-carb causes that fuzzy-teeth feeling; will have to do some googling ;-)

If you are working out regularly you should be including a serving of starchy veggie post-workout so yes, you can and should eat more than you probably are. I'm not clear on the reason behind it but thought that could be an issue...since breath and taste in mouth are high signs of reducing carbs too low....seems that teeth would also fall into that symptom category? Saree_maree
This happens to me (and always has) when I eat a lot of spinach. I've read that it has to do with the oxalic acid content of the vegetable. Are you regularly eating a lot of dark leafy greens?
jml1015
Not really - been using a lot of romaine hearts in salads the past couple days, but no spinach...
loobylifts
Sometimes coconut oil gives me that feeling, do you use it to cook with?
jburth7
Are you eating a lot of nuts? Nuts often cause buildup on your teeth. And, even though you just had them professionally cleaned, it could be tartar buildup. That can happen rather quickly especially with certain foods. jml1015
Not eating much coconut oil, no - I prefer olive oil, and occasionally ghee. Nuts - have not been eating nut butters at all; I might have a small handful of almonds in a day, but I don't think that's overdoing it (it's about what I'd eat before Whole30, and i never had the teeth thing then...) It's a mystery to me - the fuzzy feeling is still there, though I'm learning to ignore it. Very puzzling.
