Linven
Today is my Day 1. I already have a headache! And I am not sure really how I am going to eat regular meals. I am a snacker/grazer. And I am confused about a couple things. Is an avocado a fat or veggie? Or both? When I got up and got ready to go work out (Jazzercise) I had a boiled egg. I would not normally do that! But, when I got done and home, had an egg omelette with spinach, tomatoes and salsa. And a few grapes. I am wondering how in the world I will eat another 2 meals! Will check back in later. Still need to study some recipes or something to help me get that meal template understood better.
Moderators ShannonM816 Posted October 8, 2015 Moderators Share Posted October 8, 2015 Hi, Linda -- avocado is a fat. P.S. I've deleted your duplicate log in the Post-Whole30 section, just so you don't wonder where it went.
Linven
Thank, Shannon! Not sure how I missed I was in the wrong group! And, thanks, I know I read about the avocado, but reread it today. I will get the hang of it!
Linven
Just had my lunch, a burger and some roasted butternut squash with EVOO. I am so full. I guess that is a good thing, it will stop the snack cravings, maybe. I have had a few grapes and a few raw almonds. I need to ignore that snack dragon, as dangerous, almost, as the sugar dragon I think. It is amazing to me that I still have another meal to eat! Linven
Dinner was a grilled chicken breast and a yellow crookneck julienned and sauted in EVOO and my favorite spice, sweet smoked paprika! I am now taking my headache to bed.
Linven
Woke up with a slight HA, which was taken care of by 2 tylenol. A boiled egg, then off to Jazzercise. Am now having my breakfast, even though it is lunch time. This 3 meals is hard.... I am usually 2, with lots of snacking. BF is an omelette with spinach and red pepper, and salsa, cooked in coconut oil. Yum! Going to go do a little shopping to fill in some holes, and also I want to make some compliant mayo today. Linven
This is day 2 for me, and although I went to bed last night (day 1) with a headache, I have felt pretty good all day today. Surprising to me. I have had good energy today, and am feeling more hopeful. It is tough to think of how I will handle some social situations. I have a good friend down the street that invited me to dinner on the 24th. I told her about the whole30, and that I had restrictions, and her response was well, it is what it is, and you can splurge a bit. No, I can't. I can pre-eat something. She is a "chef", and loves to do recipes, which have a lot of stuff in them. Although her husband is a diabetic, and she monitors his intake like a sargent! Lunch today was compliant chicken sausage, and more of that julienned yellow squash. I am a fan! I also tossed in a few cubes of butternut squash. Dinner was similar, with chicken breast. Went to a "happy hour" at my clubhouse, and drank my water.
Linven
Forgot.... I ate a few raw cashews, a couple macadamia's, and a couple grapes. I am working on the snack attack feelings! Also, I have now Jazzercised 4 days in a row!
Linven
Boiled egg before Jazzercise, nice sweaty Jazzercise class, then home to make my breakfast. Egg omelette with spinach and red pepper, topped with salsa and a bit of avocado. Headache free today, again, but I feel a little drained. I did close my eyes before midnight last night, then was awake by 8! This is an improvement! And my stomach is not as bloaty and gassy, and I can see veins in my feet again! So there must be some reduction in the overall inflammation. Day 3. So glad I started this!
Linven
So much for being headache free today! Went to run a couple errands, and just feel like crap. HA along with a smidge of nausea. Sadly, I have only gotten 2 meals in (in addition to my pre-wo), and cannot imagine eating another! Maybe I will have an apple later. I know, that isn't a meal, but surely there is some allowance for feeling icky. Right? Or am I wrong about this? Hope this fog feeling doesn't last too long. I kind of expected it, but after day 2 was so awesome, I guess I got complacent. I have discovered I really like the yellow squash "noodles", and might even decide to invest in the Williams-Sonoma appliance, which is more (and works better) than my little cheap vegatti thing. I have a neighbor with one, and she loves it. Didn't feel like looking for an immersion blender.... just wanted to get home. Might attempt mayo later, as I really will need it for my deviled eggs! Or maybe I will use avocado for my "cream"iness....
Brewer5
Hi, Linda. I may be able to help with some of your questions. First off, it's great that you are Jazzercising! I don't know much about this, but I do know that any type of movement is better than no movement -- as long as you aren't over-doing it. Stop and check yourself for a minute, as this is only something you can answer: ARE you over-doing it? How long have you been having these headaches? Did you have them pre-W30, or is this something new? How has your sleep been? Are you getting around 8 hours of quality, uninterrupted sleep each night? Now, in regards to your meals. You really, really should be trying to eat 3 meals per day -- and making an effort to cut out the snacking. I know you are trying. Make your meals a bit bigger if you need to, and try a little harder. Snacking on nuts & grapes is "technically compliant", but not optimal. I'd like to see you get the most out of this program -- and that is not the way to do it. If you really need something between meals -- you need to make it a "mini-meal" = protein + veggie + fat. Trust me, this is a GREAT habit to get into for life. You can conquer that snacking/grazing by shaping it this way every. single. time. you. eat. Have you seen the meal template? http://whole30.com/downloads/whole30-meal-planning.pdf Skipping a meal does not call for a re-start. Eating an apple alone does not call for a re-start. You only have to re-start if you eat off-plan ingredients. BUT. We really, really encourage you to follow the template. Each meal should be protein + veggies + fat. Fruit is optional, eaten with a meal, and is not to replace veggies. Nuts and seeds are optional and can be a fat source -- but again, with a meal. You are 100% correct about the neighbor. This is not a program you can "splurge" on -- not in that way. You want to have a clean slate at the end of this 30 days, for when you decide to do careful re-intros. I'm sure if you explain to her that this is about your health and not about your weight, she will understand.
Linven
Thanks. I don't think I am overdoing the exercise. I have spent most of my adult life working out daily (until I retired 3 years ago), and have done a lot more than a fitness class. If I were sore from it, I might think differently, but I have kept up with minor things like walking, since retirement. I am thinking of taking a break from it tomorrow, though. Sleep? As a matter of fact, last night was my best night! I actually closed my eyes before midnight, and was up at 8. I usually sleep well, but getting there has been a problem for about a year. Headaches? I used to have awful migraines, but that has minimized. I wish I could say I am not used to headaches, but it happens. However, I'm thinking this is just from the dietary changes. I already feel like my meals are large! I will skip the apple and work on doing a better job tomorrow of getting it all in. Thanks for taking the time to respond! Brewer5
Also -- water. Make sure you are drinking 1/2 your bodyweight in ounces of water. If you are detoxing from anything, water will help. Out with the old, in with the new! A big glass of water is the FIRST thing I have my kids do when they have a headache. And it often helps. Headache can be a sign of dehydration. Just a thought. Linven
Yes, thanks! I am drinking water right NOW! Lol.... and it actually has backed off a bit.
GetnFitr
Linven, you are doing an awesome job!! It sucks to have headaches! Truly, my daughter gets migraines, and they are very very painful. I just want to tell you that I'm super proud of you for sticking with it, and I will say that you aren't alone in feeling like crap, but it does get better. I never would've believed it if this hadn't been my experience: I felt progressively worse from day 6-until late this morning (day 10), and now I'm feeling pretty darn good! In fact, this morning I was ready to give up. Who wants to feel horrible for thirty days straight, right? I'm glad I didn't give up because about 11:30am I started to come out of the fog, and actually had some energy this afternoon and evening. You're doing great!! Linven
Thanks! The hardest thing I am finding is getting 3 meals in! I do feel better this morning, too. Although yesterdays melt was in the evening. I wonder if I can stop sweating all the time? Lol.... hope that whole30 affects those flashes! Today, had an egg before walking the dogs. Probably wasn't necessary, as it wasn't much of a "work out". Came back and made my breakfast, and am now heading out to that Downton Abbey tea party with my neighbors. I made some avocado deviled eggs to take, so that there would at least be 1 item I can have some of. I'm pretty sure tea food is all non-compliant! Some pork tenderloin in the crock pot for tonight, and will deal with lunch when I get home from the tea, depending on how that goes. Day 4! GetnFitr
First, how are you able to watch DA? I'm sweating too, that's so weird you say that. I'm wondering if that's our hormones reacting to the detox?? Hmm... interesting. It sounds like you're doing a great job preparing ahead, which is certainly setting yourself up for success. Hopefully, you'll get thru the tea without much trouble. If nothing else, remember you're not alone in all your symptoms. It sure seems like we all experience similar symptoms within similar timeframes. You're doing an awesome job!
Linven
This group has been meeting weekly to catch up (some have and some have not seen it before). We are part way through season 4, and are watching via DVD, or Amazon Prime. We are having a blast!
Linven
To complete D4, we had a nice meal of pork tenderloin cooked in the crock pot with onion and yellow potatoes. And a side of fresh brussels sprouts cooked in ghee and coconut oil (sauteed then simmered). It was very nice. Working on water now. No headache today, but that no energy feeling is hanging around. Hope it will rebound by tomorrow!
Linven
It's been a couple days since I have had time to post. I am now on D6, with a headache this morning, but seems to have let up. That is the way it has been going. A challenge yesterday, bunco group down the street. Every table had a bowl of candy corn and a nut/M&M mix. I made it through by simply eating about 4 almonds and a couple raisins. Gave me something to do to not feel left out. Food has gone well, and I have continued to work my Jazzercise classes. The biggest issue I still have is getting all the meals in. Hoping the headaches go away soon. I did have a handful of grapes this afternoon when I got home from the grocery. I need to boil eggs for that boost, instead of fruit!
GetnFitr
Linven! You're doing great! My tired feelings lasted a few days, so keep at it because you will feel better before you know it. My second week seemed more full of detox symptoms than the first, but by midday on day 10, I really did start feeling better. The headaches makes it a rough go for sure...totally feel for you...just remember you've got six days under your belt, you're almost through the worst of it! Linven
Thanks! I am dragging this morning... dragging myself to Jazzercise! Slight headache, so I took a tylenol. Had my egg. That is hard, first thing in the morning. I am not a first thing eater! Well, I would have been happy to eat some sugary delight first thing. But no more! So the egg is tough. Went shopping yesterday, going to make a batch of compliant chili today. That is so easy to freeze for a quick meal, with veggies in it! I have a neighbor BBQ tonight. I was a bit worried about it. My contribution is a hand made veggie plate with all the cool choices. Sliced red pepper, carrot, cauliflower, etc. I will be able to munch on that happily. Couldn't find a compliant "dip", so I will just bring some dressing I have in the pantry, and eat mine raw. Wish me luck!
chezjulie
Hi Linven, I hear you about having been happy to eat a sugary delight first thing in the morning! I was really exhausted during the first week or two of my first Whole30, so I went to the Troubleshooting board. The mods all told me I wasn't eating enough! You might find it helpful to go to Troubleshooting and post a few days of meals. I was shocked because I was sure I was eating plenty, but they were right. It was also really helpful for my mood and energy to eat a serving of starchy carbs every day, and ramp that up a little before my period. Enjoyed my brief visit to your fair city! Linven
You are probably right about that. My biggest issue seems to be getting all 3 meals in. I am working on that! I haven't noticed any change in the way my clothes are fitting, either. Even with that daily Jazzercise class! Was hoping to see dramatic results, but that really isn't what this plan is all about. That would be a bonus! Glad that you enjoyed Dallas. I worked for the city for 33 years, and am really done with them! Lol... There is a lot to see, if you are a "tourist". Linven
I actually got breakfast (3 eggs, sauteed bok choy and onion, with compliant salsa and 1/8 avocado), and lunch (compliant chili on a bed of lettuce), and still have dinner to go! Going to a neighbor's BBQ. They are doing chicken and ribs, and as long as they didn't put a sugary rub, I should be good. I am bringing a platter of fresh raw veggies (which will transition nicely to cooking if left over!) and some non-compliant ranch dressing. No, I don't plan on eating the dressing. I did have a handful of grapes while digging the veggies out of the kitchen.... And I had a fried egg before leaving to workout. And I feel pretty good today!
