Day 25 MAD

I started this program for two reasons: to reset (fix?) my messed-up hormones and to lose weight (weight I haven't been able to lose as a result of my hormones.) I have been totally faithful to the program for the past 25 days. The only result I am seeing so far is my sleep is a little better. Instead of waking-up numerous times during the night, I'm maybe waking up 5 or so times and getting back to sleep faster. That's great but I am seeing nothing else and I just tried on pants that fit before and I can't get them over my saddlebags/hips. I know this isn't a '25 day program' but I feel I've made a huge mistake, eating so much fat & protein. I am very inactive right now, as I am nursing a hip injury and am off my feet the majority of the day. Was this a stupid choice, to eat so much while being so sedentary?! (And it's not my time of the month so this isn't normal monthly bloat) Here's yesterday's food intake (which is a typical day):

B: cup of coffee with coconut cream

3 eggs fried in ghee with loads of mixed veggies & 1/2 Palm kalua pig

L: baked sweet potato with coconut oil, a large portion of salmon & green beans

D: a huge portion of paleo tex mex casserole (ground beef, vegs, egg) w/ half an avocado

I rarely snack but if I do I'll have green olives, half an avocado or a T of coconut butter. Every now & then I'll have a piece of fruit in the morning with my meal. My meals are large, I'm using lots of fat and I feel satiated -- but again, is it too much for being pretty much inactive? I am going to finish the 30 days and I know my hormones won't be magically fixed in 30 days but I don't know where to go from here.

I feel I've made a huge mistake, eating so much fat & protein

Protein and fat do not raise insulin and open up the cells for fat storage.  Fruit and starchy vegetables will do that, for sure.  If you are very inactive, you really have no need for them.

No fruit is fine but no starchy vegetables is going too low-carb, which is bad for my adrenals & my mood. I'll try to cut back on my portion sizes but maybe my inactivity has increased my appetite bc I've been eating to feel satisfied & so I won't snack. It's just so frustrating.

Unless your adrenals are flat-lining you don't need the starchy veg on a daily basis - every other day would be more suitable for someone whois inactive.

If you're nursing an injury bear in mind that your body's priority will be in healing, and not until it is in a happy place will it even think about shedding excess weight.

Are you eating your first meal within an hour of wakening? Are you getting the recommended 8hrs of sleep? Are you stressed? Do you come from a background of calorie restriction?

All of these things will have a bearing on your results, and often these external stressors are the reason that many folk continue on after the initial 30days because they can see that 30days is perhaps not long enough for their body to heal and for them to start to see change.

Thanks jmcbn. My adrenals are pretty bad & I'm working with a holistic doctor who recommended the whole30 but didn't want me to go too low carb. Maybe I'll try 1/2 sweet potato daily and see how that feels.

Yes, eating w/in an hour of waking.

My sleep isn't quite at 8 hours but is improving.

Yes, I have restricted in the past.

I am TOTALLY stressed! About my weight gain (the gain before whole30 especially), my hip injury, my chronic depression... To be honest, everything is stressing me and I'm trying to deal with getting the stress in check bc I know it messes up my entire system. But I really do believe the whole30 is where I'm supposed to be. I know I have A LOT of healing to do so I am going to extend it to 60 days and try to cut back on my portions, at least while I'm inactive.

Just another thought since you sound particularly stressed: Watch your caffeine intake. Maybe even cut it out altogether. Your adrenals will thank you. :)

Check out the reviews for the book "Caffeine Blues" on Amazon if you are interested. You can learn a lot just from reviews.

You know my Dr mentioned cutting out my morning coffee and at the time (right about when I started Whole30) I said no way bc I was already cutting everything else out - but it hasn't been hard to let go of sugar/grains/dairy so I think I will cut it out during my second 30 & see how it feels. Thanks for the suggestion Brewer5!
