LaurenB
Let's get through this together! I'll hold you accountable, lift you up when you are down, talk you out of bad choices, etc... if you will do the same for me. Who is in???? I live in Chicago. Am way too socially active for this to be a breeze... but I WILL DO THIS!
Virginiawantsgoodsleep
Sure, I am looking for a buddy too. I started yesterday but messed up by tasting a bite of dinner that was for my family . We'll see how it goes - still feels like Day 2 to be (enthusiasm has worn a bit).
sonnyd10
I just started yesterday and am looking for a buddy too! I'm in if you'll have me! Day 2 is already proving tough for me. Honestly, yesterday was tough for me too. Wanted to buy sugar. Today I have a headache and I'm like, "Why am I doing this, again?" I need all the help I can get to do this. Virginiawantsgoodsleep
You can do it! Your success will be even greater because the mountain is higher. I can imagine this is most hard for the people addicted to sugar. But remember they even wrote Day 2-3 is headaches from the sugar absence. You're doing fine, right on track. LaurenB
Yay! I'm so happy that you are with me! I woke up today feeling so tired and out of it. Clearly this is to be expected. Had some sautéed red bell pepper, mushrooms, and spinach with some eggs. a banana and some coffee with coconut milk. Feeling a bit better. Here's to another successful day! Virginiawantsgoodsleep
Great, Lauren! I learned today though that I need to be more careful with the temperature of my cooking. I didn't pay attention and my green beans sauteing in coconut oil started smoking. and I ate it and it tastes weird. So I looked it up and I realized I just fed myself and my family a bunch of free radicals. Gonna change to refined olive oil for sauteing and roasting. I was tired yesterday but today i felt really good. I think I'm lucky and have passed the headaches/fatigue phase. I think I didn't eat much sugar to begin with (I'm more of a salt and carb girl) so my withdrawal was less painful. I did feel the eat everything phase though. I did the frittata with spinach, mushrooms, and olives, with coconut oil to grease my baking pan, and was very pleased with it. The coconut made it exotic. I have been doing the baked salmon but differently. I descale the skin (small knife scraping against the scales under running water) and put it skin side up. Dry it with a paper towel and salt the skin. I don't have to add any oil or anything else. Cooked it at 450 on the highest track for 10 minutes or so, then broil for maybe 5 minutes more so that the skin starts to pop. It's great! It's like a chip, and protects the flesh from getting too dry. Hope you get past the fatigue soon. By the way, this is my first time on Whole30 (or any diet, besides trying to identify and eliminate food allergens while I was pregnant because I had really bad eczema then). I'm thin because of DNA, but I have coughing at night and allergies year-round, eczema, so I'm hoping that at the end of this I will sleep better, have more energy, and then try it on my kids. Especially my youngest who has the bad eating habits and chronically reved up immune system. I also have tendency to overeat (a bit of history with depression in college) so I'm hoping this will break that as well. Goodnight!
c.hilmes
Hi everyone! I'm so glad I found this thread! I also started my first Whole 30 on the 13th, so I'm right in the thick of it with y'all. I've been craving sugar non-stop, but that's to be expected since I have a bit of a sweet tooth and loved sugar before I started this. Today I have a big headache and I have zero energy, but I"m attributing it to the cold that I have. I hope you all have a good Friday!
Virginiawantsgoodsleep
Woah, so so tired today. And I feel hungry, but not quite like eating an egg (which I generally would like). I think I'm just so tired. Coughing through the night since Saturday though, so that might be it too. hope you all are better.
sonnyd10
I wanted to let you know Lauren (and others) that there is also a Columbus Crew that you can join. They started on Monday (Columbus Day). There are a lot of ppl on there. I'm sure you'll be able to find them. Today is Day 4 for me. Last night my legs started to feel achy. I checked some old threads and found some ppl recommending to take magnesium, so I did that this morning. I think it has helped somewhat, but I still feel it. Isn't that weird to have achy legs? Definitely wasn't expecting that. I had a headache the evening of Day 1 and all Day 2, but yesterday felt much better. I'm not a good cook, so I'm having to learn how to select and make helathy dishes. It's definitely a process for me. But I'm really glad to be here and be doing this. Of course through yesterday I've been rethinking this Whole30 thing, but due to my health, it's something I desparately need. Thanks for listening! Virginiawantsgoodsleep
Hi Sonia and crew, I had achy legs too! I thought potassium and banana, but I'm just guessing. I really thought I skipped the negative, but today has blown that idea out of the water. Really felt like I was having a hangover (I don't drink). So fatigued all over, a little warm. I'm lucky I am a stay at home mom so I crawled right back into bed sending kids to school. (I imagine it must be so hard for others who don't have this option.) It's bad enough for a sick leave. But I had some fruit sugar (banana, then later a Larabar) and that seems to have helped. I ate a big lunch yesterday, then a small and early dinner, so maybe I just was hungry for to long also. And yes I saw the other big group, but since this is smaller I think I'll stick around here. I'm in Austin Texas by the way. Mom of 3: 3 years, 5 years, 7 years old. LaurenB
I like the intimacy of a smaller group. I feel like we will get to know each other, where as in a big group you are just one of many. I'm feeling so much better. I even survived a group dinner in a trendy bar! I had 2 Kamahachi crudos. It was delicious! The Whole Foods here happens to have a Paleo section with premade food items (I.E. grilled salmon, Grilled Chicken, cauliflower rice, etc. YES I read all of the ingredients and they are whole30 ok.) so I've been swinging by there on my way to work. So glad that I have this as an option! Tonight is my dinner over at a client's home. Fingers crossed that she has respected my dietary needs... don't want to insult her. Keep up the good work! Virginiawantsgoodsleep
Hi Lauren, Sonia, et al, It's Day 4. I've prayed for you, Lauren, that your client would respect your dietary needs and you would stay true to your commitment. Gosh, I think I'm getting nausea now. I would totally back out now, if I didn't know this happens and is normal. Sure doesn't feel normal. There are times when I know I'm hungry, but I don't feel like eating an egg, and there are times when I know I'm not hungry, and I do feel like eating an egg. I'm finding it hard to control portions, so I'm just going to keep the food rules and not go overboard with fruit sugar. I think the portions of weird because sometimes I feel like eating what seems like a lot, and sometimes I didn't eat enough. Good to about the Whole foods option, Lauren. I was never much of a meat eater, but I'm realizing I really need to be comfortable doing that for these 30 days. Going back to the book to refresh myself on what is expected ahead. Dancincrazy141
Hi guys! Room for one more in this little support group? Lauren--I live in the Chicago 'burbs, but spend a decent amount of time in the city. I started on the 13th. So far so good, technically speaking. Tonight was the hardest, because I was tired when I got home from work and wanted to eat everything. Typical for me on a Friday at the end of a long week. No patience for cooking. I was really thankful that I had a ton of leftover food that I had pre-prepped earlier this week. I did a good job of sticking to "compliant" foods, but it was definitely not a mindful dinner. Random leftovers, half-eaten standing up over the counter, and caved in to a couple of dates and an apple after that. Herbal tea and distractions were not cutting it. Then I got angry at whatever ficticious person thinks that herbal tea and filing their nails can actually make not caving into a sugar craving easier. I know I'm not supposed to tame the "sugar beast" with those things, but I figure progress over perfection. Any other Friday night would have been the same scenario, except it would have been some of my husband's pizza, a drink or two, and dark chocolate. Or I maybe I'd have found myself elbow-deep in a bowl of "paleo cookie batter" in attempt to make a healthier treat. So I guess I'm just thankful I said no to skittles, and will try to do better tomorrow! Jenna
sonnyd10
Hi Virginia, Lauren, et al, Today has been Day 4 for me and my legs have still been achy all day! I don't know what it is, but I sure hope that it goes away soon! I don't have the book, so I'm not famiar with portion sizes. Could someone fill me in on that? This morning I had a scrambled egg with salsa for breakfast, chicken, sauted brocolli, half an avocado and roasted zuchinni for lunch, and I spiralized zucchini noodles for the first time, with ground beef and marinara sauce to make spaghetti for dinner. I live in College Station, Texas, and tomorrow I'm going to the Aggie game with a friend. I'm going to try to sneak in a Lara bar in my pocket since the game starts at 2:30 and doesn't end until 6:30pm. And then who knows what time I'll finally get home. Hopefully I won't try to kill my friend due to hunger! I'm the only one in my family doing the porgram. But tonight we all had that spaghetti for dinner and my husband loved it. My 2 kids, 5 and 3.5 took a few bites of the noodles and my son ate his meat with sauce. Starting new habits! Boy did I wish we had a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods where I live! They sound awesome! Keep it going, friends! Y'all are doing great! Sonia

I think that you are a champion and agree that filing of the nails doesn't cut it... yet. I have found that walking my dog around the block has worked though. Virginiawantsgoodsleep
Hi Lauren, Sonny, Jenna, et al, "Like" the "progress over perfection", Jenna! And yey for planning ahead and having compliant leftovers and misc foods n fridge! I'm finding that helps. Sonny, I looked at this and it seemed helpful for someone less experienced in the kitchen. http://meljoulwan.com/2013/12/29/whole30-2014-week-1-meal-plan/ I had a hard boiled egg, with kimchi, pre-made in batch earlier in the day, last night before bed. Because I'm thinking that maybe some of the terribleness I felt yesterday was just being too hungry. And it is an easily digestible protein. Seemed to work for me. From my reading and personal experience, I think kimchi is also really helpful if you are feeling terrible (bloaty because your body is adjusting to eating veggies and meat alone). It has probiotics and will help the stuff in you to digest, as well as being easily digestible in itself. But I also read that actually soft lean protein (like not jerky out fat meats?) is easy to digest in general. Another random tip, sardines on sale at Costco. I bought a ton for easy on hand emergencies. And I realized you can Carmelo's onions and roast garlic in the slow cooker. Happy discovery of the day. Have a good one!! Virginiawantsgoodsleep
Oh yeah, and about portions. A pack of cards is one serving of meat, and eat whole meal is 1-2 of those. Pre-workout and post-workout is a bonus 1/2, and full meal's portion, respectively. Veggies go around that. Fat is there too, but varies depending on your type of fat. But my belief really is if you're hungry, eat those compliant foods. Your body is still learning how much it needs, and you'll feel terrible if you don't have enough. KLSchroed
Hi all, I started Oct 13th as well. I haven't felt too bad, and was patting myself on the back about it, however I feel my general energy levels are low. I was hoping that Whole30 would improve my energy, so I'm a bit disappointed. I am also feeling bloated and not regular bathroom-wise (sorry TMI) which is also surprising given the amount of good stuff I'm eating. I hope this gets better soon...or I don't know if I will be able to stick with Whole30 if I'm feeling yucky. I have a few challenges due to picky eating. No. 1: I don't like eggs so that cuts my breakfast choices down quite a bit. No. 2: I don't eat red meat. Looking for recipe/food suggestions! I'm keen to have a group to support me along the way. I am missing having a glass of wine badly. That is my biggest craving. I also must admit to abusing Lara bars so far by having one per day. Hope everyone else had a better day 5. Virginiawantsgoodsleep
Hi Kristen, I heard that caffeine is a stimulant that helps with constipation, just as long as you also drink a lot of water because it dehydrates. I felt that way too, and that's what I did. In case the fatigue is because your body is having a hard time digesting the new food for energy, maybe stick with lean protein which is more digestible? Chicken breast? I grilled and then baked marinated chicken, sliced it thin, and then I just eat it whenever. And besides kimchi, sauerkraut (the kind fermented naturally, not sorted by vinegar) is also very helpful for digestion. That could help with both the energy level and the constipation. How about soup for breakfast? Is that too weird for you? Today I had self control not to eat the yummy looking catered food at my son's classmates birthday party. Yey for me! I made sure to eat as much as I could beforehand to eliminate as much temptation as possible. Best wishes, Virginia
Virginiawantsgoodsleep
Ooh, my lesson for the day is, if you make the mayo, make sure you use a pasteurized egg. I made it before I thought, and now I'm not sure how I will use it. Hope I don't get sick tomorrow...
KLSchroed
Thanks Virginia, for your reply and ideas. Well done avoiding temptation at the party. I went to a happy hour on Day 2 and it was hard not having a glass of wine or nibbling, but I did it! Hoping I can stick with this but I'm not used to eating so much animal protein. 3 x per day is a lot. I'm looking for other options. I got some energy back tonight so that's a good sign. Hoping it continues. Kristen

Best, Kristen I know this may sound way weird, but all this week for breakfast I've had a deconstructed turkey burger. Trader Joe's makes a complaint Turkey Burger patty, and it's been a lifesaver. I think one of the most valuable pieces of advice that I read before starting this thing was to not think of your meals in terms of breakfast, lunch, or dinner, but instead think of them as just 3 meals that you can eat whatever you want as long as it's compliant. And regarding the Larabars....I'm there too! I've also definitely not scrimped on the fruit this week! (I'm not eating more than the FDA guidelines, but I'm definitely not eating less!). My thought is that we're new to this, so while we need to be hard on ourselves to cut the bad stuff, but fruit, and even a whole-food granola bar isn't bad, so I'm not going to beat myself up over it. I'm going to try to cut them out in this second week though, since they are sugary. We'll see how it goes!
jmcbn
Oh yeah, and about portions. A pack of cards is one serving of meat, and eat whole meal is 1-2 of those. Pre-workout and post-workout is a bonus 1/2, and full meal's portion, respectively. Veggies go around that. Fat is there too, but varies depending on your type of fat. But my belief really is if you're hungry, eat those compliant foods. Your body is still learning how much it needs, and you'll feel terrible if you don't have enough. The portions are actually measured according to the size of your palm (that's the length, width & depth of your palm) so portions are always relative to the individual. The recommendation for protein is 1-2 palm sized pieces, although when eggs are your only source of protein in a meal you should be eating the number of whole eggs you can hold in one hand, which is 3-4 for most females. For vegetables we would recommend 1-3 cups of veg per meal, with 3 being optimum, and for fat a generous dollop of mayo, a couple slices of compliant bacon, a few table spoons of a compliant oil or ghee, a closed hanful of olives or nuts (although nuts/seeds should be eaten in moderation) or a half an avocado...Fat used for cooking can pretty much be excluded as most of it stays in the pan. Basically plate your protein, fill the remainder of your plate with veg & add fat on top of that. Remember that the recommendations are minimums and it's ok to eat more. For pre WO we recommend a lean protein & some fat - just a few bites of each will suffice, so something like a hard boiled egg works well here (most people find it's better to have the yolk a little soft) For post WO we recommend a lean protein & a starchy carb - again a few bites of each is enough & whether or not you require either pre or post WO will depend on the intensity of your sessions. No fruits pre or post WO as these replace liver glycogen when you want to be replacing muscle glycogen, and no fats post WO as this slows down & inhibits the body's ability to absorb the much needed nutrients. Hope this helps.
