October 21st

Recommended Posts

So I know this is an odd day to start, but I did the calendar math and this seems to be the best time for me and I will finish just in time to reintroduce dairy on Thanksgiving. Butter and sour cream in my mashed potatoes, yes please! Pie, stuffing and gravy can wait in the freezer for a few days while I finish the reintro phase. :)

Anyone else????

So glad to have others starting! Hopefully we can all be around to encourage each other  :) I was Paleo for two years while doing crossfit, but fell off because of work. Excited for this to be the reset and get back on track.

Happy day 2 everyone!

Also started Oct 21. This is my second whole 30, first one in February. I liked it and stayed "practically paleo" since. Well until about a month ago when junk started sneaking in my diet and red wine for coping with major life stress! My main issue so far is I haven't much appetite.

Hi everyone! Turns out I was unable to start until yesterday (10/22) so today is actually Day 2 for me.

Day 1 was a true test of my willpower, there was temptation all around me! Had lunch at a fancy steakhouse where they serve complimentary fresh popovers and then cotton candy when the check comes. I declined both and enjoyed a beautiful seared ahi tuna salad with cashews, mango, avocado and grilled lemon with a drizzle of olive oil as my dressing. Then back at the office there were kolaches, Tiff's Treat's cookies and "Happy Hippos" candy. I had a Cashew Cookie Larabar as an afternoon snack instead which I know is kind of frowned upon, but the salad from lunch did not quite fill me up and I wanted to last until dinner. I still need to make a grocery haul so dinner was a Trader Joe's turkey burger patty, baby red potatoes in a skillet with ghee, and steamed sugar snap peas (which were so sweet I had to check the label- luckily they were safe!)

Last night I dreamed of mac & cheese. A little soon to for that to be happening....I hope that is not a bad sign!

Looking forward to the weekend so I can shop, prep and get even more focused! Hope everyone else is off to a good start.  :D

Oh my CJPdub that sounds hard, I am impressed you made it through day 1 with all that temptation -- good for you!!  I'm honestly not sure how you resisted a popover...  :D

I feel a lot better today than yesterday, but I usually hit a slump in the afternoon so am enjoying a hearty lunch that should get me through to dinner...

Ladies this weekend was tough! Just like CJPdub a lot of temptation...particularly drinking with all the parties. I ended up going home early both Friday and Saturday just to make sure I didnt give in. I also was getting really hungry staying up late and knew if I stayed I would have scarfed down my favorite wings.

Im realizing similar to berniesmom that a hearty lunch is the way to go to make sure Im not starving by dinner. Have meal planned for the week and have a brisket in the crock pot now. I definitely feel good and am excited to keep going, but wont be easy.

Heres to almost a week done!

Hey October 21st team -- how's everyone doing? It's day 7, what an interesting week! I'm still hanging in here, doing well in fact. I cook a lot for my family so once i got all the right ingredients in my kitchen it hasn't been too difficult preparing meals. The kids miss their sweets but they are taking it really well (my daughter started baking her own desserts this week  :) ). I've definitely had ups & downs (more downs and grumpiness) so I look forward to feeling a little better over the next few days.

The hardest thing is the grocery store -- there are so many delicious looking treats and holiday stuff out right now ugggghhh!!! I may have to resort to grocery delivery to avoid all that temptation.  Also eating out is so hard!!  I tried a couple times and ended up eating food I cooked myself. Since Whole30 is so strict, it's really tricky to know what you're getting in a restaurant. Luckily we don't have a lot of parties or social events this month, which helps a ton. How about the rest of you on day 7?

Hello there! Hangin' tough over here...today is Day 6 for me and I can't believe I'm about to be a week in! Congrats to everyone else hitting this little milestone!

I have been feeling okay, better than I thought I would be for the most part. This is no more physically difficult than other "diets" I've tried, so far anyway. But I've never stuck with anything for 30 days so we'll see how I feel a couple of weeks from now! My main issues thus far have been an occasional low blood-sugar type feeling (I think I need to add more veggies), dry mouth, and this may be TMI but I have to pee a LOT! :o My hunger patterns have been off as well, over the weekend my eating schedule was all over the board, but now that I'm back at work I am doing better.

I feel my stomach getting a teeny bit flatter so that has been nice, but I went to try on Halloween costumes last night and they were tighter than what I had wanted to see, so I immediately got down on myself. Then I had to stop and my remind myself that I was only FIVE DAYS INTO THIS...and I need to be patient!

I'm hoping to return to yoga this week. I gave myself a few days off while letting my body adjust to it's new diet and I am eager to see how I feel with exercise.

Grocery shopping has been a challenge for me also, reading labels takes so much more time and I get annoyed at how EVERYTHING has sugar in it! Recipes I've tried: spaghetti squash with meat sauce (good but I will never agree that spaghetti squash is a substitute for pasta!), veggie frittata (delicious but I got tired of the leftovers) and my favorite thing so far - coconut milk latte. So delicious! It's almost like the real thing.

I am going out on Halloween with a group of friends where I will probably be the only one not drinking. This will be a true test of my patience! I am hoping the extra energy the W30 Timeline mentions will kick in so I am not turning into a pumpkin at midnight. After all...this gives me a chance to be the one to say "do you remember what you did last night?" LOL. In a loving way of course. Let's just say my friends and I like to let loose every now and then and it will be fun to watch.

How is everyone else doing? What are your favorite things to eat and what gets you through the day?

I completely feel you ladies. Lots of treats with halloween and of course the parties this weekend. Willpower must be on 100. Ive gone to restaurants a couple of times and it is hard. The only thing I feel is the safest is a salad with oil and vinegar, but that isnt always satisfying. Going to try and find some restaurants around me this weekend that will provide more options and then just funnel all my social outings to those LOL

The one thing that is killing me is all the cooking and needing to figure out meals. What go to meal do you all have on hand that are easy to throw together, but also tasty and provide a variety?

I also want chocolate and wine so bad...

Yeah Halloween is going to be a test! I think it will be fairly easy to stay away from the candy, but it'll be hard to say no to alcohol .. we will be around lots of it this weekend! We can do this though... it's not worth it to cave in at this point!!

SL429 I also find restaurants soooo difficult. Even if i find something I think is ok I don't really trust them to prepare it correctly -- I've worked in enough restaurants to know many chefs really don't give a crap about people's special requests.

As for goto meals .. I grilled a bunch of chicken breasts & baked a bunch of sweet potatoes so I always have some on hand. If I don't have time to cook a veggie I just add raw veggies to that (peppers, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, baby carrots, etc.), and I always have some avocado or guacamole on hand. This is becoming sort of a "standard" for me if I don't have my act together to cook something more interesting. Also - Aidell's chicken apple sausages are really tasty and no added sugar!  The other aidell's flavors all have some non-compliant ingredients.

Hello Day 10! One-third of the way in! :D

Starting to feel much better and actually made it through a hot yoga class yesterday. I felt way stronger than I though i would! Had a couple of breathless moments but it has been over two weeks since my last class so it could be just because of that. A bit sore today so going to give my body a rest.

Things I've noticed:

  • I can feel my ribs! In a good way, they are not visible which would be scary...but I can feel bone where fat used to be!
  • My body lets me know when it's time for bed. When I yawn it's like a very strong, sleepy yawn and if I get to bed right when that starts happening I get a really nice, deep sleep!
  • I'm still having vivid dreams, sometimes about food, sometimes about how I look (no cellulite! ha...if only!)

Thanks for the go-to meal tips, BerniesMom! I definitely need to prep in advance a little more. Last night I had a late appt, and did not get home until 8:30 pm. I did not feel like cooking that late so I had a boiled egg, handful of olives and a big handful of cashews before I went to bed. I can't sleep if I am hungry and this did the trick! Not the best dinner but I felt satisfied.

They say days 10 and 11 are when most people give up. Let's keep pushing through! If we can get through Halloween we've SO GOT THIS!

How did everyone do on Halloween??!! I went to a party ... ugghh it was hard they had so much good food and cocktails, spiced cider mmm mmm...  I had a huge salad with chicken AND tuna before we went and yeahhh I made it!!  The host of the party is a nutritionist so I started talking whole30 with her -- that made it a lot easier to resist all the yummy stuff...  Fortunately all the candy is NOT appealing at all - that's a big milestone for me :)  How did the rest of you fare? We're on day12 !!

Woo hoo, good job! :)

I also survived! I went to a party and brought deviled eggs I'd made with my first batch of Whole30 mayo, decorated with black olive "spiders". Everyone else had pizza but they also loved the eggs! After we ate, we went out to a club (bottle service and all!) and for the first time in my life I did not have a drop of alcohol in that setting! It was so weird, but I kept my glass full of club soda with lime all night and pretended it was a weak drink and I was fine! My friends kept asking me how I was doing, it's funny how concerned they were. Most were super-supportive and proud of me, but there was one who kept trying to talk me into a shot. "C'mon you should break your cleanse and have a shot!"...she actually said that to me, more than once! But I held strong and told her "next time!" I had a really great time and as I expected it was SO FUN watching everyone. I hung in there until about 1:00 am.

The hardest part was driving home and not stopping for late night munchies! Such a bad habit and I now see how psychological it is. The best part was waking up with NO HANGOVER! Victory! Haha.

Yay ladies! We all made it. Definitely was not easy. Went to a party as well and just kept my class full of club soda, which is usually my drink of choice with some vodka, so it was that minus the vodka. I also made it until about 1 PM and at that point the crowded club was not where I wanted to be. Then someone said IHOP...so that was my cue to go because I dont think I could have been around those pancakes and resisted. And it was SO NICE not to have a hangover yesterday. I was so productive.

Thanks for the meal prep advice berniesmom! Im going to do that. I have all these grand plans for meals and while Ive been doing okay its just getting too time consuming.

I need to pay more attention to my body, particularly with sleep like CJPdub. My work hours involve long days, sometimes 12 hours so being tired is something I am used to, but I need to do a better job of getting to bed earlier rather than sitting on my couch to decompress.

As for exercise, I have continued doing spin and have felt a lot better. Have gone to crossfit a couple of times, though it will take a while for me to get back into the swing of that now that Ive been very on and off of it for a while now. I am not sure Ive lost any weight, but Im feeling better in my own skin which is the most important thing. Happy to be getting back to feeling more like myself again.

Happy Monday!

2 weeks today, and almost to the halfway point yeahh!! Congrats everyone on making it through Halloween too! I'm glad to read your comments because well... I'm not feeling all that different at this point either. Sleep has been meh, maybe a little better than usual. Still have tummy issues.which is the main reason I am doing this Whole30. I don't think I've lost weight, maybe a pound or 2.  I worked out for the first time earlier this week - went for an easy 3 mile run and afterward felt like complete crap!!  That was disheartening because I expected to feel good but it was the complete opposite. I will try another run tomorrow :)

So anyway... I am sticking with it! It's getting much easier and I do feel pretty good -- just not "amazing" so maybe that feeling is yet to come.I need to look up more recipes because I feel food boredom sneaking up on me...

YES!!! Hip-hip-hooray for making it a full 2 weeks! It's all downhill from here, right? ;)

BerniesMom- I feel the same. Feeling better than I did the first week but no amazing energy yet. I'm finding I may not always be eating enough because I am also bored with the food. Yes, time for some new recipes!

I have a road trip carpool and team meeting at a Beer Garden in Austin tomorrow. It's going to be a super-long day.  I've studied the menu in advance and there does not appear to be much at all I can have, so I'm packing some emergency snacks just in case I don't get enough to eat.

The social part of this is really challenging. When I chose my start date I had only about 5 events on my calendar and wouldn't you know it that has now doubled! Happy Hours, birthdays, surprise visits from two different out-of-town friends...it's like I am really being tested! I will just look at these as "opportunities" to try my new skills and practice some self-control. I've come too far to slip up now!

Hope you're all having a great week and feeling strong.

Yes the social part is sooo challenging I agree CJP - I've only been out to eat twice but both times ended up with a salad, grilled chicken or salmon, and oil/vinegar. Kind of boring! And the salmon I ordered came with a big dollop of I-don't-know-what on top so I had to scrape that off. So, I don't really trust restaurants and I am not a huge fan of the salad with protein on top... I can make that at home any day!

Yes you are definitely being challenged with all those social events -- but those things are a part of life so I guess we have to get used to them and figure out how to enjoy them without being so focused on food....  Best of luck with those parties, just enjoy the company and stay away from the food table :) You can do this! And think how good you'll feel heading into the holidays (when things REALLY get crazy) knowing you have some great new habits to get you through.  We're halfway done with this!!!

So its Saturday evening and have a birthday event to go to in a bit. Had one last night and the look on peoples faces when I said no to alcohol will keep me laughing for days. As a result of that, when they asked why in their ever so snobby tone, I replied, because I want to LOL Didnt even care to explain to them what I was doing, but it helped me stand my ground when they werent so understanding ironically. The crowd will be a different one tonight so wont be an issue.

This week for meal prep Im making a big thing of chili which I am really excited for. The weather has been weird in DC, but seems to be getting on the colder side so chili, stews and soups are going to be great. Im going to do the chili from the Whole 30 book, but if you all have any suggestions on spices/additions to it let me know!

Happy weekend!

Great job SL429! It's truly amazing how people react when you decline alcohol. Most of my close friends have been very supportive but I still get the occasional "wow I can't believe your willpower!" It's not really that hard people! Yes, I miss it a little and wine is the first thing I plan to reintro, but I've really been rethinking my relationship with alcohol and plan to practice a lot more moderation in the future because I just feel too good without it!

Chili sounds good, I am going to do that soon. I am going to try NomNom Paleo's Cracklin' Chicken tonight. Fried chicken is a favorite comfort of mine and this looks like it might be a good substitute!

Today is Day 18 for me. I cannot believe I've made it this far and I am so excited to see what the next two weeks bring! Staying off the scale has been a challenge for me but I can definitely feel my clothes getting a little looser and I am really starting to feel great. I think there might be something to this!  :)

Yayy good job everyone! I also feel my pants are fitting a little better, my mood has been good, and I'm not missing sugar or alcohol or grains as much as I thought I would. It's getting easier day by day.  My tummy is still pretty unpredictable -- still not "regular" ugh! but hopefully that will happen...  Can't believe how far we've come!

Holy cow is it really DAY 20?! Two-thirds of the way in and a full three weeks as of tomorrow! I can hardly believe it but like others have said, it is so much easier at this point and I just want to keep going!

I've been sleeping very soundly this week and I've awakened with no alarm at 5am for two days in a row, which is truly amazing for me! I am soooooo not a morning person. I downloaded a sleep tracking app and plan to start using it tonight because I'm really curious to see what it tells me.

I tried the Cracklin' Chicken recipe I posted above and OMG it was so good! I'm very skeptical of how it can be healthy because it tastes THAT GOOD. But it's "on plan" so I'm going with it! Move over, Popeyes and KFC. :)

You know what else I just realized? This weekend will be the last weekend we have to be fully W30 compliant! We've got this!!!

How is everyone else doing this week?
