Captain's Log - Day 18: Cookies outside my office

Seriously - two tins of cookies outside my office?  Madness!

I have hit the part of Whole30 where sugar cravings have almost brought me to tears.  I am pushing through it, but I want nothing more than a small soft-serve vanilla ice cream cone.  Instead, I reach for a cup of decaf coffee with unrefined coconut oil.  I use my hand held frother to blend it to a silky smooth texture.  When I take my first sip I think, "My God, this would be awesome with just a touch of Splenda."  I sigh and continue to sip until my sadness ebbs.

I was not expecting the sugar cravings this late in the game. I thought after week one of having hardly any cravings I had beat the sugar-blues and the rest would be a cakewalk (no pun intended).  I am looking for this phase of the plan to pass so I can walk past the tin of cookies and smile smugly to myself as I no longer want to put the tin to my face and take a big whiff and maybe lick just one cookie... just one!

Good way to look at this is that the cookies (or whatever yummy thing you desire) will not be leaving the country, continent, planet, or solar system anytime soon. They will be there when you finish your whole 30.

As a side note - I know this is hard.  It could be possible that you are going through an extinction burst.  This is where body does everything in it's power to convince you to go back to your old way of eating.  It's a crummy stage that may last for a couple of days.

I remember doing one whole 30 where we celebrated my brother's birthday around my day 22.  There was cake - and I was told it wasn't even very good cake.  But the fact that I had to face the left over cake every time I opened the fridge did not sit well with me.  I wanted a piece of that cake SOOOOOO bad!  I did land up powering through fine - made a few of my favourite meals during that time in order to compensate - but it was still hard.

I am definitely in the extinction phase.  I want it all - burgers, fries, alcohol, sugar, mayonnaise, cheese.  This is the worst pychological warfare I have ever had to deal with.  I keep sipping green tea and trying to find things to eat that will kill the cravings.  I find Macadamia nuts and olives work great for the salty.  Coffee w/ coconut milk help with the sugar.  I'm on day 5 of this and today has been worse than that last 4 days.  I'm hoping I will wake up tomorrow and it will be over.

I see you say you are missing mayo. Have you tried the homemade kind yet? It is seriously amazing. Try this recipe from Well Fed:

Just make sure you use LIGHT olive oil; not extra virgin or the regular kind -- it has to say light or extra light. (I actually replace just 1/8 cup of the light with EVOO to amp up the flavor, but that's a risk you might not want to take.)

Another note: I see that lots of people use avocado oil instead of olive oil. I tried that and found it too rich.

Also, if you have an immersion blender, it's ridiculously easy. I think it's even worth buying one if you don't have one -- you don't need to get a fancy one.

Lastly: Make sure you do NOT keep it in a particularly cold place in your fridge -- this might cause it to get too hard/freeze and then separate when you take it out. I keep mine in the door.

I did not know there was such a thing as an extinction burst, but I'd say I have had it on both of my W30s. Nice to have it explained. When it happened I cooked my favorite meals & over-ate, or found new & interesting meals (nothing like a new favor to get your taste buds lying down, replete with satisfaction), and definitely... always... mayo. Mayo, for me, fixes everything.

It IS possible that you could be under eating.  Under eating will also lead to massive cravings.  Also FYI the extinction burst phase usually happens around day 21 or 22

If you want to post a couple of days worth of meals here we could help you troubleshoot.
