Starting Today

Hello all!  I'm starting my first Whole30 today and already have questions!  Hoping for some help!

First, I'm a high school teacher and my day starts early.  I get up at 5:15, have some lemon and warm water, grab a black decaf coffee, and then eat breakfast at work.  I know I'm supposed to eat within 30 min of waking but I'm just not hungry!  Any suggestions??? Also, eating that early, I won't make it through the day without constant snacking!

Thanks so much!

Welcome!

First off, the recommendation is to eat your first meal within an hour of waking.

Secondly, assuming your coffee is caffeinated, the recommendation is to have that after your meal 1, as caffeine can act as an appetite suppressant.

Start small: have a mini-meal of protein, veg and fat within that first hour. That could be a hard boiled egg, slices of pepper, and some avocado.

So if I eat what you suggest as a mini-meal, then won't I be hungry again in a few hours, well before lunch?  I guess I need to do it before I ask a bunch of questions!

I gave one suggestion for a mini meal in my original response - maybe you missed it?  :)

Other ideas off the top of my head:

- prosciutto, melon and nuts

- sardines in olive oil and sauerkraut

- tuna, chicken or salmon salad made with compliant mayo. Sweet potato on the side.

- leftovers of whatever protein, veg and fat you had at a previous meal.

I'm starting today also. So far so good, but this whole black coffee thing will take some getting used to. I avoided the cronughts in the staff kitchen and am going to the grocery store to grab lunch to avoid a catered lunch in the office. I do feel like I'm starving and on the verge of passing out. Maybe my mini breakfast needs to be bigger.

I figured I'd share why I'm starting and my goal. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and have constant issues with swelling and fatigue. I also have never been a good sleeper. My doctor keeps adding things to the list of what she thinks is wrong with me and wants me to go have expensive tests done. I think there is a better way and the Whole30 will hopefully be the solution. I'd really like to come off all my RA meds one day. I hate the weekly shots, frequent blood tests to see what could be going wrong due to the meds and so on. I want to be able to be active without gritting my teeth and plowing through the pain and fatigue.

I don't want to lose weight on this plan, can't afford to at 5'10" and 135 lbs. I just want to be healthier and figure out what my body reacts to so I can eliminate it and feel better. I'm a super active person and may need help with the no losing wieght and not feeling like I'm going to pass out feeling.

Any one else in my shoes?

Have you seen this article regarding keeping weight on during a Whole30?
