JeannieS
I went to a friends house for a luncheon. I packed and brought my own food, but because she knew I was doing Whole30, she made a roast chicken. I had a few pieces of breast meat and as I was nibbling on a drumstick I thank her again for going through the trouble. She says.. 'Oh - it was no problem! I just got an All Natural Rotisserie chicken from the store. I checked the label and it says it was just chicken and salt.. BUT it 'could have been brined in a solution of up to 18% water, chicken stock and carageenen" So.. do I start over?
CJPdub
I would say no and just avoid it from here on out...not 100% of everything we put in our mouth while dining outside the home is going to be fully compliant and they say there is no "perfect" W30 so just do the best you can! But what do I know, I'm a newbie and only on Day 3! Curious to hear from the experts on this one.
JeannieS
Thanks! I was thinking the same.. but I don't know because this is only my first time trying Whole30 and I've already started over two times (once because I popped a donut hole in my mouth without even THINKING --- too easy to do that! The other time was because I was eating date/nut balls like candy and realized that wasn't the point! ). It will be a bummer to start from scratch but if that is what I have to do.. Moderators Tom Denham Posted October 24, 2015 Moderators Share Posted October 24, 2015 Carageenan is one of the worst things that you can consume. Eating that brined chicken was no small thing. Your gut is starting over whether you do or not. Here is what we have to say about starting over... Do I have to start over? http://whole30.com/2014/06/really-start-whole30/
dwerder
Good timing on this topic - based on what you wrote, Tom, I think I know the answer but I'll ask anyway. At a brunch at a friend's house today and she knows I'm on Whole30 - today is day 6. Everything is going great, I'm eating without issue, and she serves an arugula salad with dressing - she tells me what's in the dressing and it's all compliant. Then as we are all eating, someone else asks what's in the dressing and she tells them, including champagne vinegar, which she didn't mention earlier. I check the label, and there is sugar in it. I hadn't eaten much, but I assume I should be starting over, right?

JeannieS
*sigh* I had a feeling. Oh well! Day 2, AGAIN.
dwerder
Yep, started over - I was on Day 6 and back to Day 1, but no biggie. I'm all in! Wondering if it's common to feel really tired after a full week in - last few days I've been really sleepy in the afternoon -
JeannieS
I actually don't mind starting over again. I look it as though I've been in 'training' for the last week and a half.. now I'm ready for my marathon!! I can say that I felt REALLY tired yesterday (which would have been day 7 but turned back into day 1 because of the chicken mishap).. like zero energy and less than zero motivation. I almost napped while reading. Kept putting my book down to close my eyes. I don't know if that was due to the inappropriate ingredients in the chicken or if i was just REALLY tired. I'm much better today though... still no Tiger Blood but I guess I have a few weeks until that happens.
Administrators ladyshanny Posted October 26, 2015 Administrators Share Posted October 26, 2015 Good on you guys for starting over and with good attitudes, that's so nice to see! As far as being tired in the first week, yes, it's normal. Depending on where you came from pre-Whole30, it can be a longer adjustment to get to feeling better. You are also free to post a few days of typical food; we can take a look and see if anything stands out. Off the cuff, a few common things that mess with energy are: eating fruit on its own or relying heavily on fruit -- this can cause blood sugar spikes and dips, consistent with lower energy excluding starchy veggies -- we recommend at least one fist sized serving of a starchy veggie per day...timed later in the afternoon is reported to help with sleep and energy. Note that our recommendation is to start with one serving. You probably need more if you are nursing/pregnant, more if you are nearing or having your period, more if you are highly active, more if you are prone to anxiety/depression not eating large enough/balanced meals Let us see what you've been up to and see if we can get you feeling better! Seafarer
JeannieS and dwerder.... GOOD for you! I am impressed! I was not expecting it to be easier to eat at a restaurant than at a friend's house, but that has so far been my experience. Restaurants seem to be used to lots of questions and also (usually) seem to be willing to accomodate when they can. For example, if you take your own dressing instead of asking for something they can, but don't usually, make, and they'll be pleasant & helpful..... and pleased that you are looking after yourself instead of putting them to extra work. But friends? It seems to be a minefield with what they are serving having an emotional connection to how much you love them. Bring your own salad dressing? It's an insult to what they have made, and "ruins" the presentation they worked so hard to achieve. Sigh. Even if a friend has actually completed a W30, I don't think I'd trust them to keep my meal compliant. From sad experience, I will either host the meal, or invite them to dine out & pay for the restaurant meal myself. I admire you both for cheerfully starting over. It's the right thing to do.
