bexmac6
Hello! I am at the end of my first Whole30 and I am still not feeling the amazing benefits that I hear others are having! I plan to continue on for another 30 days at least. My question is.... should I give the Whole30 more time to work or should I eliminate night shades, eggs, etc now? I still have a lot of aches and pains, low energy, and stomach pain (although that is better than it was.) Thoughts?
Moderators SugarcubeOD Posted October 30, 2015 Moderators Share Posted October 30, 2015 Can you provide some background as to where you were at before you started the Whole30? You mention aches and pains.. is that just a side effect of getting older (I don't know how old you are) or do you have auto-immune conditions that contribute to the pains? Do you have a medical condition that gives you stomach pains? What were your reasons for doing a Whole30 and did any of them come to fruition? What benefits HAVE you felt? bexmac6
Sorry! Background is probably a good idea! I am 38 and have no known medical conditions, although I think I have fibromyalgia and gluten sensitivity. I am quite overweight (230) and I am sure that contributes to the aches and fatigue. I recently ruled out Celiac, Chrons, and other stomach issues. The pain is crampy and bloating/ gas. The pain radiates to my chest, shoulder, and neck. I have had a cardio workup and all was ok. Last Dec I was diagnosed with mononucleosis that has taken all year to get over. I have had many episodes of reoccurrence that I can't seem to shake. I think I am having one now. Basically they make me feel like I did when I was initially diagnosed. Sore throat, swollen glands, extreme fatigue, flu-y, etc. My doctor has ran loads of test and everything has been normal other than low B12 and Vitamin D. I am now on supplements for those. Checked my thyroid, blood glucose, etc. She doesn't like to diagnose things like fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue. I have a long list of symptoms and reasons to do the Whole30 but the main goal is to feel better!! While my symptoms may be improving, all are still around! Ugh! Moderators Tom Denham Posted October 30, 2015 Moderators Share Posted October 30, 2015 Your starting point is such that it may be too much to expect tiger blood in 30 days. I'm sorry. It would help to know how you have been eating this past 30 days. What are your typical meals - composition, amount, etc. We need to figure out if you need to make any adjustments before even thinking about eating from a narrower menu. Also, water intake, sleep, exercise, life stressors, etc.
bexmac6
You are in luck! I have my menus from weeks 3 and 4...See attached. Amounts are per whole30 recommendations....fist sized protein, couple cups of veggies, small fruit, etc. I have been satisfied at mealtimes and my hunger IS greatly improved. Except today. I am shaky and hungry today. Whole30 Week 3 Menu.pdf Whole30 Week 4 Menu.pdf

Unfortunately, sometimes for some people with a disordered background or major medical issues to overcome, 30 days is not enough to resolve them. Eating whole foods and good fats in balance will definitely help you feel better but it can't cure things like mono or fibromyalgia... food can make the symptoms of medical conditions worse or better, so you can definitely help yourself with the Whole30 but it can't cure diseases. It would be my opinion along with Tom's above that further restricting your available foodgroups would not be the next step. You need to give your body adequate time to heal, feel safe and comfortable and with your pre-existing conditions, it may take a while.
Moderators SugarcubeOD Posted October 30, 2015 Moderators Share Posted October 30, 2015 A few things. Are you really only eating one hardboiled egg for breakfast with fruit? Eggs, when they are your sole source of protein are as many as you can hold in your hand without dropping. For even the smallest woman, that's 3-4. You should not be relying on RX Bars as a meal replacement... they are for emergencies and since breakfast happens every day, that doesn't qualify for an emergency. There is no fat listed in your meals except for the snack. When your vegetables are 'salad', you need to eat a veritable wheelbarrow full to make enough bulk... think about how little it is when chewed or wilted down. 2-3 cups of veg as the recommendation doesn't really count salad greens... they're great to eat, but ALSO eat heartier vegetables in a 2-3 cup quantity. Snacking daily leads us to believe you're not eating enough if you feel that you need to snack every single day... what is a 'not dog' and what do you mean by 'spaghetti' and cilantro 'rice'? You've got a lot of fruit on there sometimes as many as three to four servings a day it looks like... you may want to remove the fruit and add in more vegetables...Fruit can cause your blood sugar to spike (especially in the mornings) that will make you feel weary and hungry later on. GFChris
Everything SugarcubeOD and Tom have said is right on the money. Also, the recommended protein per meal is 1-2 palm sized (not fist-sized) amounts. That's the length, width and thickness of the palm of your hand: 1-2 of those. The cramping/bloating can be caused by not enough water (or too much carbonated water), too many nuts, and raw veggies. You might want to cut back on the nuts and raw veggies (switch to all cooked veggies) and see if that brings you relief. How much water are you drinking daily? How much sleep are you getting nightly? If your doctor doesn't like to diagnose real conditions like fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, I suggest you seek a second opinion from another medical professional who does believe these conditions exist.
