Evaporated Milk. Yes? No? Maybe?

So ideally I've decided to live the paleo lifestyle.  There are very few things I want to add back to my life as I find myself thinking constantly about if there is added sugar (my big woe) and if there is, it's a no no from the start.  Do not pass go.  So when evaporated milk showed up with my coffee.  I had some.  Until I saw it said it had sugar.  But from what I am reading it's a natural sugar.  I wanted to know if this is something that I can add back occasionally.  I can pretty much drink black coffee but sometimes when I am out at restaurants the coffee is so nasty that even roaches think it's raid, so I want to use evaporated milk to give it flavor. Am I correct in that the sugar that is in evaporated milk is natural and would you choose this over half & half (and if so why).  Keep in mind I only do a teaspoon in my coffee so I am trying to compare the two.

And no, cinnamon in my coffee and almond milk or coconut milk is not a coffee's best friend for me.

Oh and milk does nothing for me physiologically because I only drink milk in my coffee.  If you catch me drinking a glass of milk it means the moon has turned bright orange and aliens have come down to release the pods  :D

Thanks for your answers in advance

On a Whole30, this is a no.

Post-Whole30, you get to consume whatever you choose. In this forum, we typically don't address off plan foods that are less bad after your Whole30. It's your call for your body and lifestyle you choose, what you decide to add back and in what frequency/context.

I agree with Chris: obviously no during a whole30, post whole30 you get to decide.

While you are deciding, you might want to look at the ingredients list. Some (most?) evaporated milk contains Carrageenan. Personally, even if I didn't have a dairy issue I would avoid this product for that reason, whole30 or not.

As Chris has said above what you choose to consume post W30 is entirely up to you.

As far as sugar is concerned the less bad options would be raw honey or maple syrup (ACTUAL maple syrup, NOT maple flavoured syrup!!) as they do contain minerals & antioxidants of one kind or another, although maple syrup is still about 70% sugar, and raw honey about 80% sugar per 100 grams.

That said ALL sugars are broken down in the digestive tract & transported to the liver in exactly the same way and your liver doesn't know or care about their source.

If it were me I'd opt for the real thing over a chemical reproduction of the real thing, every time.

LOL you know I was only waiting for one YES right @Tom Denham.  No seriously, thanks for all the responses regarding post-paleo (though I rather say at this point it's going to be life-paleo (with slight modifications.... and I do mean as slight as I can manage it).  And @missmary, I did see Carrageenan I believe in one of the brands so I will continue to be on the lookout for that.

Thanks everyone.

MrAlex,

you can hope you tolerate dairy after your Whole30, I was certain that was one thing I'd be adding back myself after my first Whole30.

Then I did my reintroductions ... and chose not to bring it back except for really special things like amazing aged cheese at a party. And I suffer the consequences.

So far so good @ultrarunndergirl.  I only use it one time a day (twice at the most) and other than that I don't drink milk.  I drink coffee black now (which I didn't think I could do but discovered I can).  I only use the evaporated milk when the coffee is so bad that I need some coloring.  Thanks for the heads up.  I will keep monitoring it.
