Day 14 and depressed...

Recommended Posts

Interesring, for the last two or three days all I've wanted to do is sleep. Been very tired and depressed. I don't want to practice (drummer) or go out or do anything. I feel very negative and just want to keep to myslef. Don't see the value in talking to anyone and just want to leave town! Mind you, there are a lot of things to be upset about, my job and living situation suck and I feel so alone. Doing good on the Whole30 and actually had a nightmare that I ate something sweet off plan. Just like the book said. Didn't think it was going to happen. No cravings either and could either take or leave food...

Could you list a couple of days' of food, including approximate portion sizes, water, exercise, and sleep? Maybe there's something that you can do to help.

In general, make sure you're eating at least a fist-sized serving of starchy vegetable each day, and maybe go ahead and have two or three servings each day until you start feeling better. Make sure you're eating enough, and including fat at every meal. Try to get out in the sunshine some each day if you can, and maybe look into Melissa's social experiment -- video explaining it here -- for ways to connect to people in your everyday life.

Sure, thank you...

B - 3 scrambled eggs with mushrooms and onions, banana, and coffee

L - (leftover) fist size shredded pork tenderloin with spinach, baked potato, apple.

D - 12 cauliflower florets topped with 2 fists chk curry w onion's and sweet pot, 9 prunes... (very constipated for last dice days, prunes are helping a lot)

B - banana and coffee

L - 4 kale meatballs with tomatoes and palm of cauliflower risotto

D - same as lunch before

B - 3 hard boiled eggs, banana, coffee

L - same as lunch before

D - 1 link large chk sausage with cauliflower risotto and fennel pear salad.

I drink about 3/4 to a gallon of water a day and I am a Harley mechanic so I stay pretty active. Live w mom which is hell and at work I'm the shop b@h until I get moved to "flat rate" status. They also keep making promises that are never kept. Only dealership worth working at in S. Florida. Ex-girlfriend and I started talking again after being broken up for like three months and I absolutely hate the materialism and superficiality which is S. Florida. I spent 7 months working in San Antonio last year. LOVED IT! But I was very lonely and had to come back. I have re-connected with music being in Miami and have a great teacher which is probably the most positive thing in my life besides the whole30.

Thank you so much for your reply!

Yeah, I don't think you're eating enough.

When eggs are your only source of protein in a meal you should be eating the number of whole eggs you can hold in one hand - that's 3-4 for most females, 4-5 for most males.

Your breakfasts for the past 2 days have not really hit the recommended meal template of 1-2 palm sized pieces of protein, 1-3 cups of vleg (with 3 being optimum), and a geneorus serving of fat, not allowing fruit push veggies off of your plate - ok it's a recommendation, but it's recommendation for a reason - you will feel much better when you follow it! When you start the day with a poor breakfast you spend the rest of the day playing catch up, and since what we eat has a cumulative effect on our bodies afet a few days of a poor breakfast we start to feel like crap...

You're also a low on starch - starchy veg like all varieties of potatoes, beets, turnip, parsnip, beetroot, etc will help with your moods, especially if you are proe to anxiety or depression. Since you are feeling low you could definitely do withincreasing your intake of these to AT LEAST a fist sized serving a day, although a little more over the next few days woudn't do you any harm.

Then other than egg yolks (which I personally don't count) I see no mention of any added fat in your meals - fat will provide energy and is vital for brain health, so will help resolve that tiredness and lift your mood a little too.

You might want to add in a magnesium supplement - the vast majority of us are deficient in magnesium due to modern farming techniques depleting the soil of magnesium - it acts as a muscle relaxant so will help with sleep, and help with your bowel movements too.

Once you've made these tweaks & have a few more days under your belt life will look a whole lot better and you might even find that by the end of your 30days your head will be in a better place to start putting plans in place to get to where you really want to be - be that in love, life or work B)

Hope this helps.

Hello,

I was about to start a new topic : Day 10 and depressed... I did not since have seen Rudyinfante's topics.

First of all, I am french, living in France, so excuse any mistake when I write in english.

The things I am hopping to change with the Whole 30 is my level of energy, my frequent bad mood and irritation in my hair. I know I have to wait until the end of the program and I was ready for that. However I was no prepared :

1) to be so depressed for no reason (no specific issue in my life right now). I am very negative, I have no patience with my kids, do not want to laugh or smile. Only want to sleep, do nothing and be by myself. It has never happened to me before.

- the irritation in my hair are worst. Almost like eczema ...

I have read advises that were given to Rudyinfante : starch, vegetables for breakfast and more added fat. I will try to follow that. But if you have any other advises or explanation or words to encourage ...

Thanks

Hi there

It would helpful if you could give us an example of what you have eaten at each meal over the past few days, along with how much water you are drinking, and any exercise you are doing, your levels of stress, and how much sleep you have been getting - that way we can offer advice for you specifically, although the advice given to Rudy regarding fats & starchy veg would apply to anyone feeling low/tired/depressed.

With regard to the eczema like symptoms you describe please be aware that these pre-existing medical conditions often get a little worse before they get better....

If you post a log of your food as suggested we can check that you are on the right track.

And no need to apologise for your English - it's MUCH better than my French!

Thank you for your answer

Drink :  about 1liter of water each, mostly through herbal tea

Sleep : more than usually since I have started the program. 8 hours

Sport: I walk 30 min a day to go to work and come back and since I do not feel like working out since the beginning of the program, I do not do more. Focusing on what I eat/ do not eat is already a challenge for me.

B: 2 eggs, 1 banana, almond butter (1/8 cup)

L : cabbages, cucumbers, fennel with olive oil (1/8 cup)

chicken breast

pineapple(1/2 cup)

D : crab (3/4 cup), homemade mayo (1/2cup), carotts and turnip (2 cups) with clarified butter (1 spoon)

I had also grapes, nuts and coconut flakes after dinner (I have just realized I was "feeding the dragon" with those and will try to stop that)

Thank you

GBR, I'd say the biggest thing is that your breakfast is small, light on protein, and lacking in vegetables. Try having three to four eggs, or if you don't want that many, try two eggs with some other meat. And add some vegetables. I like to scramble eggs, meat, and vegetables together, so I might have eggs, spinach, and sausage, or maybe something like this egg foo young: http://meljoulwan.com/2010/08/08/paleo-egg-foo-yung/

Also, while it's fine to have fruit with breakfast, many people find that when they do, they are hungrier than usual later in the day, so that's something you might want to experiment with too.

As for water, we recommend a half ounce of water per pound of body weight so if you weigh 120 lbs you'd aim for 60 ounces of water. A liter is about 33 ounces, so I'm guessing you should probably work on doubling that.
