Moderators SugarcubeOD Posted November 19, 2015 Moderators Share Posted November 19, 2015 It may feel like you're eating a lot of volume but your meals are not balanced. Have you seen the meal template (linked in my signature). It asks you to eat 1-2 palms of protein (or as many eggs as you can hold in one hand if you're doing eggs as a sole source of protein), 1-3 cups of vegetables and depending on the fat source, an amount of fat (half an avo, 2 thumbs of mayo etc... also linked in the meal template). This is for every meal. Your breakfast is not nearly sufficient. There is no protein and no vegetables (leafy greens would need to be a veritable wheelbarrow full to be sufficient). I can't tell what the portion size on the lunch and 2 cups of kale, again, is not much actual food... think about what happens when you wilt down greens... there's not much left. It's not surprising that you felt the need to eat more after this day of consumption and that you're hungry a lot. I can't comment on the amount of calories because calories are not really a relevant scale of measure. A calorie is defined as The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of a kilogram of water by one degree Celsius Calories don't tell you if the food you're eating in nutritious or garbage. Counting calories is the path to madness. It doesn't allow you to learn to listen to your body when it's telling you that for whatever reason it needs extra fuel one day (maybe you're extra cold or menstruating or overly stressed) and it doesn't indicate how those particular nutrients (or toxins) are absorbed into your body. Instead of counting calories, follow the meal template. Eat generous portions of real whole foods to keep you full for 4-5 hours and then do that again two more times in the day. I know you're saying you want to lose weight and the common advice is to restrict your calories in order to make this happen. All that restricting does is muck up your hormones which cause your body to slow it's metabolism to prepare for the famine you're telling it is coming by not eating proper portions of food. Try making your meals to meet the template 3 times a day for a week and you'll see a huge change! Link to comment

katie_g
Doesnt mention sweet potatoes... Is it discouraged to eat those unless you are super active? Or can most people handle them just not every meal Link to comment
Kimberly22
Hi! I am on day 18 and I was having that problem last week and I realized I didn't have enough fat in my meals. So I've added avocado to my lunches and dinners and it has helped immensely with my appetite. Good luck! Link to comment
Moderators SugarcubeOD Posted November 19, 2015 Moderators Share Posted November 19, 2015 What doesn't mention sweet potatoes? Sweet potatoes are talked about all over this forum and in both the books. It's a personal experiment as to how you do with sweet potato and other starchy carbs. If you're very active, have trouble sleeping, have monthly hormonal issues (for women), struggle with the blues etc... starchy carbs may help with those things. If you're trying to lose a significant amount of weight, have a sedentary lifestyle, have some conditions such as SIBO, starchy carbs may not be right for you, or may be right for you in smaller quantities. Im completely new to a forum of any kind. So I just now saw the search key word thing. Ill stop bugging everyone. I am sorry You're not bugging people, this forum is for asking questions. Sometimes it's hard to tell tone from written words, and some people tend to be more matter-of-fact than others, which can sometimes come across as harsh. Just a note on the search function here in the forum -- it's not always very helpful, like it won't search for words of three letters or fewer and has some other quirks. The easiest way to search for something is to go to google and search Whole30 forum plus whatever you're looking for. Link to comment

Im completely new to a forum of any kind. So I just now saw the search key word thing. Ill stop bugging everyone. I am sorry You are absolutely not bugging people. I understand what you mean as I am new to this forum too and I have the opinion that some of the people that provide their advice have sharp tones to the words. You are here trying something and you should be congratulated! I am on day 19 and am probably eating too many sweet potatoes and I do have about 40 pounds to loose. But losing weight is not the main reason I am doing it. I have an autoimmune disease that causes body pain and over the years I've developed this thing with food when I am in pain AND the medicine I have to take screws up my hormones and metabolism. Since starting Whole30 my symptoms have been better in some areas but worse in others like the pain in my body so late last week I added in starchy carbs to breakfast and lunch which helped with my mood. Some may say I am replacing the food that I normally eat when in pain with starchy carbs but I say I am making healthy decisions in the right direction! I guess I am telling you this because everyone has their own reasons for doing Whole30. I am eating foods that are compliant…period. It's your journey and sometimes you have to do what is right for you. Link to comment
Administrators ladyshanny Posted November 20, 2015 Administrators Share Posted November 20, 2015 late last week I added in starchy carbs to breakfast and lunch which helped with my mood. Some may say I am replacing the food that I normally eat when in pain with starchy carbs but I say I am making healthy decisions in the right direction! This is absolutely the right thing to do and what we recommend many times a day. So many people experience low mood, low energy, poor sleep etc when they go too low carb. While the Whole30 is not actually "low carb", because you are removing all the dense sources of carbohydrates from grains and sugars etc, some people inadvertently go too low and feel the negative results of that. The solution, adding them back. Our recommendation is a fist sized serving at least once a day, more if you are prone to anxiety/depression, more if you are nearing or having your period, more if you are highly active and just more if it makes you feel good. Do know that tone is difficult to judge on the internet and while there are some mods (myself included) that are less sweet and effusive than others, we're here because we want to help. That is the underlying message.....so if you sometimes get a response back that doesn't mince words, know that it's not because the person is trying to be mean or not encouraging or doesn't value you. Quite the opposite. There are about 7 of us and hundreds of users, we do the best we can. And we love you all! Link to comment

I have not seen the negative tone from moderators but I have seen them from Advanced Members. I get it about following the rules of Whole30 and in general I think people are trying this wonderful program because they want a change in their life...therefore when a mistake is made they shouldn't be "scolded" for it. It's just my opinion but I am more for the positive reinforcement rather than tough love. That's just me though. Link to comment
