Moderators ShannonM816 Posted December 1, 2015 Moderators Share Posted December 1, 2015 Hi Raven and everyone else here! I started today 11/30 and I am so happy to find others for support. I tried to get my husband and sister to join me but they both said NO! They wanted to start in January but I feel very strongly that I want to ring in the new year feeling better than I do today. What will be hardest for me is not snacking. I am a grazer but I really don't need to be. So I prepped proteins and cut up veggies and have had 2 of my 3 meals. I am still nursing one of my daughters so I am going to reserve my snack for "when I really need it". My main reasons for doing this are to "reset". I have been needing caffeine and sugar in a way that is not normal for the past year. I want to wake up with more energy- I'm exhausted and yes I have two little ones but I dread the first cry because no matter how much sleep I get I fel like crap in the AM. I also would like to lose weight but am really aiming for the lifestyle change to stick. I believe the rest will follow. Right? I have about 35-40lb to lose. Looking forward to following your journeys. Hi, broccolimama -- I just wanted to jump in and say, as a nursing mom, you should go ahead and plan to eat four meals a day. It takes a lot of energy to not only do all the things you need to do normally, but on top of that to feed a little one, so be sure you give your body all the nutrients it needs to do that. If you have questions or just want to read about other people's experiences breastfeeding while doing Whole30, google Whole30 forum breastfeeding and you'll find a ton of past discussions. Definitely don't be afraid to add fat to your meals, have at least one serving of starchy vegetable each day and more if you find you start feeling tired, run down, or if your mood seems to be low, and drink plenty of water (at least 1/2 oz per pound of body weight, so if you weigh 120 lbs, aim for at least 60 oz of water). kerik68
Day 30 and the tips I would share are: 1. Really don't weigh yourself until the end. This was the most difficult thing for me and I'll weigh in tomorrow. Yes, I had to have DH take the scale to work with him and then he brought it home and hid it. lol 2. When you make something, absolutely double it. Triple the recipe if you can because you will get tired of cooking at some point. I did this round with my DH and our 24 year old daughter who lives at home during the week for work. I am very fortunate to be "retired" but I will tell you, I was in the kitchen a lot. I made some pretty complicated meals in the beginning and then trickled off to simpler stuff. 3. Read your labels and if you aren't 100% sure if the ingredient is acceptable, just don't have it. Anything ending in "ose" is sugar related. 4. Do not be afraid of healthy fat! Make sure to have some at every single meal. Follow the template. 5. Add fermented food every day. Look for sauerkraut without sugar. It's a great probiotic and helps to heal your gut. 6. Take pictures. Before, during and at the end. The differences are amazing especially with skin! 7. Subscribe to the daily emails. Yes it costs a bit of money but the emails are jammed with great info and help with motivation. I'm sure I'll think of more things but that's a start. Good luck Day 1ers!

raven526
Good Morning Everyone!! I can happily say I kicked Day 1's butt Dinner honestly solidified it for me. I was not hungry, at all after dinner. I made the hollandaise sauce that's in the book with the salmon and I honestly think it was all the ghee that kept me so full. But I am scared that I am eating too much fat. Keri, thanks for the insights! I've been looking at my thumb as two TBSP so that's how much fat I've been adding and then once out of the pan, sometimes half a TBSP more because of what stays behind between cooking and changing pans. I think I'm going to try to take pictures weekly but I'm afraid that if I do and I don't see changes, that will be discouraging. I have the emails and they are AWESOME! Loved my Day 1 video. Breakfast this morning is hard for me because of my own stupidity.... I hate frittatas, scrambled eggs, omelettes that have no cheese and getting this veggie frittata down is a struggle. I started eating this morning around 7:30, couldn't finish it and now it's at work with me, staring me in the face. But I need to eat it otherwise I'll be starving soon. How's everyone else's morning going?
WholeMama623
Morning Raven!! Just wanted to say don't be afraid of the FAT! Seriously! I was afraid the first Whole30 but your body needs healthy fats! It's good for you. I eat lots of ghee, paleo mayo, black olives, and avocado, and I've always LOST weight! It's alllll good! My morning is going well. The big ol' cup of black coffee certainly helps!!! My lunch today is another fresh ground chicken patty, with broccoli slaw in olive oil, and carrots with ghee! I tend to do a LOT of the same lunches because it doesn't bother me, and it's easy to make on my way out the door in the morning! It's the dinners that are usually a little more creative for me! fruittree
Glad to hear people had a good day 1. I am feeling good myself today. Added chanterelles cooked with garlic in olive oil to the dinner last night and that really put it over the top. Apple sauce was super easy - I just peeled, cored and sliced a couple of apples, put them in a small pan with some water, and cooked them down. When they got soft enough, I just mashed them with a fork and added a pinch of cinnamon. It can be a nice accompaniment for certain foods. That recipe looks terrific, AngieWhole30ready. I might have to give it a try. If anyone gets bored with water, something we do to make dinner drinks more interesting is take a big glass of seltzer water and squeeze half a lemon and half a lime into it. Dinner tonight: sirloin steaks, pan fried mushrooms, last of the garden beets - roasted, green salad. The wife made these nice date/lemon/coconut balls for 'dessert' (if necessary). Best of luck to everyone today!
raven526
I need to order more ghee! I ordered an 8 oz thing and used most of it for last nights dinner! How much does everyone typically go through in a week? Still have the headache today but apparently that is too be expected. Lunch for me today will be leftover salmon, asparagus, and broccoli. I have a snack with me again but hoping I won't need it today since dinner kept me so full last night. Drinking lots more water today! Yesterday by the time I went home, I had only drank 24 oz. Today I'm already at 24 oz What's everyones water count?
Angiewhole30ready!
Kerik68 - thanks so much for the great tips! #2 especially. I am already not loving the idea of cooking every night and it really is just not feasible when you get home from work at 8 pm. Fruittree thanks for explaining how you made the applesauce - sounds supersimple - will whip up a batch this weekend! So I had sushi tonight out and did the stuidiest thing. I never get rolls with rice (I have never liked rice, I typically do the sashimi) and I asked the waiter tons of questions about what I was ordering to make sure everything in the roll was compliant. But of course I forgot to make sure there was no rice in it. So it comes and it is a big rice bomb. LOL! I felt too bad to send it back so I painstakingly unrolled each piece and scraped out all the rice I could. #sushifail Tomorrow for dinner I have a frozen piece of tilapia to bake with a mango sauce on top. Yum!
kells2015
Hi Everyone! I also started on 11/30, but I am just now realizing how much I am going to need support through this! I kind of got the food rules down, jumped in and am now getting the details on stuff (like reading the book, etc.). For me, day 1 was pretty easy. Day 2 got hard around wine o'clock. Today I woke up for the first time since I can remember without a stuffy nose. WOW! I have been eating pretty basic stuff...a protein, veggies and healthy fat. I did buy some canned coconut milk for my coffee (I am a latte-aholic), and I used a ton of it the first day. I had checked the ingredients, but not the calories, and I drank about 1000 calories in one cup! LOL! I know we don't need to count calories, but that seemed a little bit excessive for a breakfast beverage. So grateful for finding this thread with people with the same starting point. I can see some hurdles ahead, and accountability is going to be my bff through those times (like my partner's birthday, holiday parties and of course the holiday itself). Have an awesome day!! jmcbn
The wife made these nice date/lemon/coconut balls for 'dessert' (if necessary). Hey fruittree & welcome to Whole30 Sounds like you're doing good so far. Just on the 'dessert' front, this is something we really try to encourage folk to refrain from - even if the ingredients are compliant. If you're looking for something to cleanse your pallet after a meal try going the opposite route & have something pickled, or maybe just clean your teeth. Keep up the good work! raven526
Welcome Kells! We are all here to navigate this together and support one another I completely understand about wine o'clock! Last night DH and I went to play dodgeball. The team meets at a local bar beforehand and I was good and had water with lots of lemon. But we did not do well in our second game and by the time I got home, all I wanted was a glass of wine because I was feeling so crappy. Proud of myself though, I recognized that I just wanted something to comfort me so I made a cup of tea, got in bed, and journaled. Breakfast this morning was happily not a real struggle. I stayed away from the eggs that I knew I wouldn't want to eat (but had planned for) and made myself a huge salad with ground chicken and avocado and roasted cauliflower and Tessamae's Ranch dressing. My body still does not like eating first thing in the morning so I am finishing it now at work but at least I'm not just staring at it What's on everyone's breakfast menu today? WholeMama623
Raven, have you thought about making your own ghee?? I used to buy ours too, but I was going through it way to much, and it's a lot cheaper to make yourself! We buy kerrygold, or a local organic butter and make it ourselves! It's really easy! Just a thought!! Day 2 here. Everything has been going really well. Lunch is left over dinner... Burger with broccoli slaw, black olives, and a sweet potato with ghee! Not sure about dinner yet. Luckily I'm not having any headaches. Maybe my body will ease into it better this time, since I just completely my first Whole100 in August? We'll see! raven526
WholeMama, I just purchased a new one from Pure (the last one I had was OMGhee but Amazon gave me free shipping haha.) I did consider last night making my own ghee. I cook a lot so I don't why the thought of making my own ghee is scaring me. Do you have a recipe I can use? Angiewhole30ready!
Hi Raven! I hear you on the brekfast front. I have never ever in my life been able to eat first thing in the morning. I eat breakfast but usually not until 10 am and I don't care what anyone tells me, I am not forcing myself to eat when I am not even slightly hungry before then! There is a lot of great advice out there but no one knows your body like you do. Having said that my 10 am eggs were delicious Late last night I did have a bit of a snack craving. Sure am glad there was no junk around! I had half an apple and some kalamata olives and felt satisfied. The olives were leftover from a recipe so I am so glad I had them around as a healthy snack option. May have to buy some more this week.
raven526
Angie - the eating first thing is hard. Before I started I asked this question and one of the moderators said that would change and suggested I try eating some of it at home then eat the rest once I get to work. Which is sort of working. It's weird because I'll eat around 7:30 and then get full half way through but by the time I'm driving to work I am starving.

I did consider last night making my own ghee. I cook a lot so I don't why the thought of making my own ghee is scaring me. Do you have a recipe I can use? Ghee is just clarified butter, although some ghees are browned or spiced. Me, I make clarified butter. The directions are here: http://whole9life.com/2011/10/butter/ I just use the cheapest unsalted butter I can find. It takes about 30 minutes. If you cut up your butter into chunks it will melt faster, and then let it simmer. There will be a LOT of milk solids. I skim off most of these and then strain through cheesecloth at the end. Don't eliminate the straining as that removes ALL of the milk solids. You're left with the flavor of butter, but without the milk solids and water. Wonderful! Having said that my 10 am eggs were delicious Hi Angie, & welcome to Whole30 Just re the breakfast issue, not being hungry for breakfast when you waken is actually fairly indicative that your hormones are out of whack and the main way to resolve that is to eat within in hour of wakening which is why it is one of our biggest recommendations. Obviously when you're not used to eating first thing it can take a while to adjust, which is why (as Raven said) we would recommend plating a template meal and eating as much of it as you can (ensuring you get some of each food group), then wrap/pack up the remander to eat as soon as you feel able. You'll be surprised how quickly things turn around and you waken with an appetite and realize that breakfast is one of the best meals of the day. Doing what you've always done gets you where you've always been....

Angiewhole30ready!
Thank you moderator for your response. I am going to respectfully choose to disagree with you. I am quite happy with where I am, my main goal here is to reduce my sugar cravings I get at night and get thru the holidays in a healthy manner. I am a very healthy 112 llbs and 5'4" and have been sick excatly 2 times in the past 7 years. So I am A-OK with ending up exactly where I am. Thank you very much for your observation though as I am aware that most people get hungry in the morning and like to eat early. Nothing wrong with that but I have tried forcing myself to eat soon after I get up and it makes me feel sick.

I hope this Whole30 helps you with your stated goals and surprises you with other "victories" as well. I'll be curious to see if you are successful in removing late-night snacking (sugar or otherwise) if you start to get hungrier in the morning (meaning you WANT to eat before 10am and wouldn't have to "force" it). Not that you need to be. I just can't relate because I'm hungry the second my feet hit the floor as I get out of bed. In fact, sometimes hunger wakes me up! (I've always been that way; I was raised with a mom who always went on about "breakfast is the most important meal of the day" - BUT my brother, raised in the same household, is the opposite - maybe more like you are). Angiewhole30ready!
Good morning! I want to check in and see how everybody is doing. I have a full day and won't be able to check back until around 9 PM but has anybody found any new recipes they have enjoyed? I have a great roasted mushroom recipe I will share later that makes a yummy side. It has tons of herbs and garlic in it, so delicious. Also I have a link for a delicious cold brussel sprout salad with walnuts, jalapeño and pomegranate arils. Surprisingly it all works well together and is a nice change from a boring tossed salad. I will be a road warrior today so I am packing lots of healthy snacks, like sardines, apples and almonds for the car in case I can't stop for a real meal. There is a Whole Foods along the route though so hoping to get lunch there. Thank goodness for Whole Foods, that place is a lifesaver some days! Angiewhole30ready!
Here is the salad one http://www.alexandracooks.com/2013/12/12/brussels-sprout-salad-with-pomegranate-walnuts-jalapeno/ You can always just buy the pomegranate arils as a shortcut, although a lot cheaper to buy a pomegranate whole. I know time is precious though! Next time I may steam the brussel sprout leaves for 30 seconds instead of boiling them because it was a pain in the butt to fish them out of the water. Mushrooms http://www.italianfoodforever.com/2008/08/roasted-mushroom-medley/ I did rosemary and thyme for the herbs and then added fresh parsley after they came out of the oven. Delicious! WholeMama623
I'm glad to see someone posted a ghee recipe! It's very easy! We've been making our own for awhile now and think it tastes much better than the stuff we buy in the store, too! I am just cooking very basic stuff right now! I need to start checking out some recipes and getting more creative. I am already getting HUGE guilt trips from my mother that I can't eat crap for Christmas. It's actually making me quite mad, to be honest!
raven526
Good Morning Everyone! WholeMama, I planned out so many recipes for this week but ended up throwing half of them to the wind. I kept with some of the ingredients I was planning on using but did not have the energy to follow through with some of them. Last night I was supposed to make these mini potatoes stacks and it was like (insert bad language here), these are being boiled, smashed and baked haha. They were just as good! Angie, I might have to try that brussel sprout salad, minus the jalapenos... Not a big fan of heat. But it sounds yummy! Sorry I'm so late checking in.... Busy morning at work and then I wanted to make sure I had my meal plan for next week so tomorrow I can make my shopping list... I purchased so much produce last week that I feel like half of it will go to waste. I have a ton of Kale that I will be making Kale Chips with tomorrow night (if I'm hungry!) I'm planning on Chocolate Chili and a Sweet Potato Mash... I feel like that will be filling enough But it will be Friday night where I am normally snacking on popcorn or a frozen pizza and wine or beer. So, who knows what signals my brain will be sending. How are you guys planning on facing Friday night/the weekend? Will this be a big shift from your typical weekend eating habits? So funny, I was just thinking oh wow my breakfast kept me pretty full this morning and then it growled something LOUD. I ate my leftover steak with some eggs, mushrooms, and onions AND finished the entire plate before I left for work. It was so good! I'm happy I had no co-workers around to hear that But it's also been more than four hours now... I think I'm allowed to be hungry haha
