Sharonruns
I successfully completed my 2nd Whole30 this November. My first was January. I'm super proud of all I accomplished, both of my non-scale victories and my 10lb weight loss this time around. I even successfully navigated Thanksgiving and my unhealthy food pusher family by making/eating my own Whole30 compliant dishes to share. Here's where things get tricky. I need help! Today my meal 1 and meal 2 were Whole30. For dinner, I wanted to introduce cheese. It's the one thing I kept thinking about all through November. I decided to make a Veggie Lasagna... no noodles, roasted zucchini and eggplant used instead of noodles, as well as the sauce recipe in the new Whole30 cookbook, and fresh basil. The nonWhole30 things were ricotta, parmesan, and mozzarella cheeses. It was delicious, but I now feel sluggish and bloated... something I never ever felt during my Whole30. So, do I decide to stay away from cheese or what exactly should I learn from this "cheese" experience? I've already firmly decided to stay Whole30 compliant the rest of the week. I feel that gross. My other question is my daily morning coffee. I always start the day with a cup of coffee. On Whole30, it's black. When I'm not doing the Whole30, I put a teaspoon of skim milk and either a dash of sugar or a sugar substitute. I've found I don't miss my milk and sweet in my coffee every morning, but I do however miss Starbucks being it's "that" time of year. Pre-Whole30, I was especially fond of the Toasted Graham Latte. What's something I can order that wouldn't totally inundate me with a whole lot of sugar and generally bad ingredients, but still give me that "holiday treat" one-time feel.... and please don't say a cup of tea. Any advice/suggestions are appreciated!!
Moderators ShannonM816 Posted December 2, 2015 Moderators Share Posted December 2, 2015 You've learned you feel sluggish and bloated when you have cheese. Now you use that knowledge to help you decide whether cheese is worth having in any particular situation. Check out the Guide to Nutritional Off-roading for more on that:http://whole9life.com/2011/04/whole9s-guide-to-nutritional-off-roading/ As for Starbucks, that's a tough one. Plain coffee or an Americano are probably the best bets, especially if you go there often. If you truly go once or twice during the holiday season and that's it, you may decide it's worth it to just have your usual drink. For me, this is not a good option, because I will seek out opportunities to go there, and suddenly an occasional mocha or latte is once a week or more, but that's me and you may be different. It's something you have to decide, and you need to be honest with yourself and willing to change habits if you realize they're no longer good for you. Whole30 Certified Coach littleg Posted December 2, 2015 Whole30 Certified Coach Share Posted December 2, 2015 Have you tried full fat coconut milk in coffee? We were talking about it here. You could try adding pumpkin spices to the coffee (I've done that, its good). There are also paleo creamers out there (GGG mentioned a recipe in the thread above). I'm with Shannon - one treat like that is a gateway for me. I just can't start - but if you are not that type of person just go have one and enjoy it knowing that you may feel like poo afterwords Or if you are like us, take a look at the ingredients for that drink and ask yourself "do I really want to eat vegetable shortening, hydrogenated soybean oil, high fructose corn syrup" (instead of "do I want a latte?") and then remind yourself that you don't and that you can have a equally yummy, though slightly different healthy creamy coffee drink. Any advice/suggestions are appreciated!! What about a London Fog? If you can have dairy, then a London Fog is Earl Grey Tea, milk and vanilla syrup... that's basically just sugar/dairy and you can definitely ask them to do half sweet (don't go for the sugar free tho... that's packed full of more chemicals and is actually worse for you). I like to get around the syrup by making Cream of Earl Gray (that's an EG tea with vanilla flavor), brew it and then put some coconut milk in and sometimes a tiny extra dash of vanilla... My suggestion would be to go and HAVE a Toasted Graham Wafer Latte... I don't think you're going to like it... I suspect that you'll find it chemically and synthetic and WAY too sweet... maybe that would be a good way to challenge the belief that you 'need' a seasonal 'treat'... Haha... i see you said 'don't say tea'... but since I said a tea latte, I count that as not the same
Sharonruns
Thanks so much for all of your suggestions!!! For now, I'm going to stay away from Starbucks and be happy with my black coffee at home! I even bought a nice new holiday travel mug to drink from.
