Epic Bars and Brown Sugar +Deli meat

I am curious if any of you have had a conversation about the Epic bars that are promoted from the Whole30 site. I ordered them to have as a snack while doing Whole30 and am surprised that they contain brown sugar---one of the items on the "naughty" list.

Also, throughout Whole30 literature there are references to deli meat being a no-go because of Carrageenan--however on page 195 of Whole30 book the first thing on the protein list for good food on the road is deli meat

Any clarification on these items would be great----thanks! T minus 2 days and counting until kickoff.

Any Epic Bars containing sugar are not compliant for a Whole30. Save those for after you've completed a Whole30.

Deli meat is allowed, but you need to use compliant deli meat.  Carrageenan is one of the first things to look for on the ingredient list, to avoid any food containing this item.

Further, bars are emergency food only on a Whole30.  We don't want you relying on bars for snacks.  In fact, instead of planning on snacks, focus instead on building meals of protein, vegetables and fat that satiate you for 4-5 hours. If you're genuinely hungry between meals (litmus test: you could eat something bland like steamed fish and broccoli), the recommendations is to have a mini-meal of protein, veg and fat.

Good call to put them on hold and to focus on meals that keep you satiated so there is no need to snack.

In a true "emergency" situation, there are some compliant flavours (Pulled Pork, Chicken Sriacha, Lamb Currant Mint, Beef Habanero, Turkey Almond Apple, etc. - you just need to check the labels).  I would consider Epic bars to be superior to Larabars (again, some flavours are compliant while others are not) as they do contain a good portion of protein and fat and moderate carbohydrates, whereas Larabars are fat and carbohydates (a dangerous combination for many and one that can prop up continued sugar cravings).

Cheers,
