tlovesb
Anyone else doing the Whole 30 with jaw joint issues? I had both TMJ joints replaced five years ago after multiple jaw surgeries and still have limited chewing ability. I find with eating more "real" food my jaws often tire out way before I am finished eating. I do try to include more foods that don't require as much chewing such as soups, eggs, tuna salad with compliant mayo etc., but would love to hear suggestions, thoughts, etc.
MTNan
Oh wow, what a thing to go through! I have TMJ, but mine is a little unusual in that, while I have a rather severe popping in my jaw, the pain is usually relatively minor. This has been going on for close to 30 years, at times with worse flare ups than others. Oven roasted veggies can be cooked until really soft- I'm thinking cauliflower, sweet potatoes, carrots. Look at nom nom paleo's Kalua pork or Mel joulwans Italian pork roast- both are cooked 16-18 hours on low in a slow cooker, they come out fall-apart tender. Nom nom paleo's Asian meatballs have always come out very tender and soft when I've made them, whereas some other meatball recipes can be a bit more "chewy." Broccoli or butternut squash soup made with coconut milk would be appealing to me if I had a pain flare up (you said you do soups, I'm sure you've done those!). Good luck! joybedford
I have TMJ too at its worst I can't eat any solid food at all. I have been virtually pain free for a few months but I have a cold and it's started up again along with the worst headache. I found compliant chilli with roast peppers good, soups, scrambled eggs, any kind of hash or scramble with the veg cooked really well. I must admit I gave up my last whole 30 because it was so bad I couldn't get in enough calories and needed to use meal replacement shakes and porridge. I now regret that decision and wish I had carried on. I am starting again on the 4th. Good luck I hope the suggestions help.
praxisproject
My favourite soup: http://meljoulwan.com/2012/11/05/silky-gingered-zucchini-soup/ it is best with bone broth, which also helps with bone health and healing. If something you make is too hard to chew or swallow, try using an immersion blender to smooth it out. If you figure out things you can eat easily, but aren't sure what to make with the ingredients, post a list and I'm sure someone will have great ideas
lcizmotivated
I have TMD(Temporomandibular Disorder) it was so bad that my jaw would lock and I could not bite down or it would shift almost to where my molars would line up at center of mouth, OUCH! I get headaches and my jaw does tire easily when chewing. I like to cut my food into very small pieces so that I won't have to chew as much before I swallow it down this helps a bit. I had gone to my chiropractor he would adjust it and it would feel ok for a day or two but as soon as I popped it I was right back to it. One day I went in and Dr. suggested orthodontics. I thought he was nuts but he had an employee with the same problem and it helped her. So at my next dental visit I asked the Dentist about it he said it was possible as my bite was so off. I was referred to the Orthodontist and was put into braces. It is not a cure but can help greatly relieve the symptoms of TMD. I am now into it about 4 months and already my symptoms have subsided. I am optimistic that it will only get better from here. I think it is worth at least looking into. Most consults are free wouldn't hurt to see what they say. Melissa Lake
I have TMD also and on top of that I'm kind of a picky eater. I have always had a weird thing about food texture and so far (I'm on Day 2), the texture of every meal Ive tried has made me gag. (Frittata with Kale, Baked Avocado Eggs, Cauliflower mash-and I hate bananas for the same reason). I threw away the avocado eggs this morning because I just couldn't and ate my "emergency" RXBAR which tasted amazing but killed my jaw. I'm getting ready to go grocery shopping for sweet potatoes, carrots, and parsnips to roast and ground chicken to make hash. Also thinking about chia seed pudding which may be close to SWYPO, but at least I know I like it. So frustrating and it's making me clench my jaw more!!!! Guest
yep I have TMJ due to anxiety problems. I have to cook all my veggies until they're quite soft and can't eat anything too chewy/sticky
ArtFossil
I had severe TMJ in the 70s and 80s and endured various treatments but then got a night guard in the 90s and haven't had any problems since. (Except for having to have it FedEx-ed to me a couple of times when I left it behind when traveling. )
Melissa Lake
The night guard actually made mine worse because it prompted clenching, which is a bigger issue for me than grinding.

It IS SWYPO, seeds are recommended to be limited and unless eaten as a small part of a larger meal, it's not part of a template meal. If you're having trouble with chewing and that's why you're going for the pudding, try blended soups which are more nutritionally sound than pudding but are easy to eat. Another thing is that a lot of people even without food aversions have a hard time with eating in the am... it's actually quite common for people to say that savory foods make them gag or feel nauseous in the morning. This is due to hormones being unbalanced. The way to help that is to eat within an hour of waking... make a template meal, eat as much from it as you can, evenly taking protein, fat and veg, and then when you find you can't eat anymore, wrap it up and take it with you. When you feel you can stomach more (not when you're hungry), eat from it. This should only take a few days to get things more balanced... throwing it away and eating rxbars or chia pudding is only going to keep your body demanding sugary sweet foods for breakfast and not help with getting into the habit of eating real food within an hour of waking. Eventually, that neutral position became a daytime habit as well. The bottom line is to find out what works for you. In Whole30 and all else. MeadowLily
A side effect of teeth guards that my dentist shared with me. They create a dry mouth and set up an environment for extra plaque. If unbeknownst to you, the guard causes your mouth to fall open even slightly, you'll need your teeth cleaned several times a year. Choices and consequences. I wouldn't say savory foods in the morning make me gag, but certain foods make me gag all the time. I know enough about myself to know what I can struggle to get down (Kale Frittats) vs what is just not going down. Avocado eggs were definitely in that category. I have found some better breakfast alternatives. I also didn't eat the chia seed pudding for breakfast-I ate it as part of my lunch, and it was only about 3/4 cup of almond milk, a tablespoon of coconut milk, and a tablespoon of chia seeds. I also had some diced chicken with it. That said, I do plan to incorporate blended soups this week along with smaller pieces of protein (like roasted chicken) that aren't too hard to chew. And I've figured out some other softer veggies to incorporate-zoodles, roasted root veggies- so I am not really going to eat the chia seed pudding anymore
