LauraDanger
Hey everyone, Im Laura and I live in Glasgow, Scotland. For the last 12/18 months ive been 90% paleo (the 10% for visiting family and going out with friends) but over the christmas period i decided to make things easier for other people throwing my usual diet out of the window. It had been so long that i forgot how much my body hates breads, pastas, rice etc. I sat waiting for the new year bells to ring so that i could go home as quick as possible. I dont want to be so uncomfortable in my own body again. So since Jan 1st ive been back to my usual diet and ive decided that its time to take a step further and try whole30. Ive been following whole30 on instagram for almost a year and Ive read almost all the success stories and i want to be able to speak about my own. So here is how ive prepared. Ive spent the last 12/18 months cutting out bread, pasta, rice, potatoes (dont like the taste anyway). Ive also cut down my sugar intake massively. Today ive emptied my cupboards of sauces and premade spice mixes, alcohol and sugary drinks. My biggest downfall will be the useless supermarkets here in Glasgow and that im on my own (except from you guys!) I go back to work tomorrow so i want to be able to prepare and freeze as many meals as possible. Does anyone have any good recipes which can be prepared and frozen?? (or direct me to the correct thread?) -Laura

Domesticlou
I could have written that entire post other than the fact I'm the opposite end of the country to you! Are you on Pinterest? I pinned this link the other day - I haven't done any of them yet mind: https://onceamonthmeals.com/blog/recipe-roundups/50-freezable-whole30-recipes/ Or, my absolute fave is Nom Nom Paleo - you can download a pdf of all her recipes which are Whole30 compliant and I'm sure lots will be freezable. I'm on my own too so I'm always on the look out for recipes that aren't made to feed the 5000!
praxisproject
Mel Joulwan has great recipes too: http://meljoulwan.com/2014/01/04/whole30-2014-week-2-food-plan/ I really love her Hot Plates, which is really more of a concept than a recipe I actually have a Scotland question, not sure if you know of any, but when I was a kid I loved Smoked Oysters from a can (flat, sardine style can with a pull). Now all the brands I see in Australia are from China and the can is full of horrible oil (and the oysters all have crunchy sand in them, yuck!). I remember the ones we had as kids were from Scotland, have you seen any compliant ones around?

(or direct me to the correct thread?) -Laura Hi Laura, I'm from Dundee and am just about to start Whole30 for the 1st time. I haven't followed the paleo diet before but have been making gradual changes to my diet after noticing the effects they were having. I gave up gluten, corn, and dairy a few months a go and started to feel a lot better but slipped over Christmas and New Year and feel terrible again. I'm now determined to change my diet completely both in the short and long term to get out of my old routine which always ends up with me eating poorly / drinking too much again. I know exactly what you mean about waiting for the bells to ring at New Year. I was out (in Glasgow actually!) and felt bloated and uncomfortable. I know what you mean about supermarkets and think the key is to being organised as you have to pretty much make everything from scratch. I'm in the planning stage just now but plan on doing a lot of prep over the next few days to get all the basics ready and will do that each weekend so it's easier to stick to during the week. I love cooking which is a bonus i suppose! I'll share what i'm cooking as i go so hopefully there's something you'll find useful. Good luck! I can't say I've had them before but had a look online and Tesco sell a John West version ( http://www.tesco.com/groceries/product/details/?id=250319990)but they're made with sunflower oil so probably no good. You'd have been as well having of bottles of wine I started today as well and feel good so far. I had scrambled eggs with sweet potatoes and broccoli for breakfast (sorry meal 1!) then a chicken and avocado salad for lunch then having meatballs with tomato sauce and zoodles for tea. I bought a cooked chicken from tesco and took the meat off the bones, used some for my salad and saved the rest. I now have the carcass simmering with veg and herbs making a stock. I went shopping earlier and have a ton of veg some fruit, meat, eggs and olives along with all the basics like apple cider vinegar. I've not planned out all of my meals but have everything i need to do me about a week i think. I'm not going to make a 30 day plan and map out every meal as i'd rather just decide a few days a time and cook what i fancy eating. I'm going to make mayo, kimchi, coleslaw and chili sauce later and will do more prep tomorrow to get me to the middle of the week at work without having to do much after work. Hope your feeling better soon and can get the rest of your prep done.

I did however use my time productively and made an order to collect at 8am tomorrow! (Ambitious, much?) ill prep sauces tonight so this day hasnt been a complete waste. Youve also inspired me to add an extra large chicken on to the order to help make my own broth. Perhaps ill shop about for a large pot too! jmcbn
Guys, just be wary of any added sugars in those Supermarket rotisserie chickens. I tend to buy raw & slow cook my own, but the one time I asked in Sainsbury's they told me the marinade varies from branch to branch...

The ready to cook roasted chickens on the tesco web site contain brown sugar so i'd imagine there the same kind they sell in at the deli counter. I'm not going to risk it so making it a Whole31 now and giving away the stock to my family! It's annoying but an important lesson i suppose! praxisproject
Some can contain gluten too. If you speak to the manager, they may know (if they have no idea I wouldn't eat them). Beware if they have different kinds and cook the "clean" ones on the lower levels, with "dirty" ones above. If you want to roast your own, this recipe is both easy and awesome (use ghee, not butter): http://nomnompaleo.com/post/26079656034/julia-childs-classic-roast-chicken I made it the first time having never roasted my own chicken before. I did it without a rack and without string and it turned out great For bulk cooking, do two chickens at once!

Thanks for the advice, i spoke with a friend who works at the chicken counter in Tesco and he said they just plain roast the chickens unless the packet advises it's bbq or garlic butter in which case they add a marinade so think i can use my stock. I hope so anyway, it's now finished after simmering for 14 hours and smells great.
Minimal4Me
Hi Laura, I remember that hangover feeling from my first W30. It goes away, and you start to sleep very soundly and wake up feeling fresh and brimming with optimism and energy. Hang in there. I second the posters on NomNom and Mel. Those recipes are my go to. I take Mel's advice about Satuday cook ups. I love her posts about how she manages meal prep.
LauraDanger
8am collection was a great idea until they did that "replacement" thing. Had to give back loads of stuff and just wander around another neighbouring store to get the rest of my stuff. Feeling great today, the migraine/nausea is finally gone! Got beef brisket on the go and a spinach frittata. Also using my tea shop experience to make ice tea. so far so good

You'll have no additives, and lots more almonds than the 2% this product offers.

I'm glad your feeling better today, that all sounds great. I made soup with loads of veg, chicken stock and coconut milk. Just had a bowl topped with roast chicken and mixed greens sauteed in coconut oil it's great and plenty left for lunch during the week
