leslie706
Sorry for the TMI, but I was very concerned with something that happened last night. I have been having major difficulties sleeping, so I took a Benadryl to help me sleep last night. I went to sleep around 11 but woke up at 1am sweating, with the worst heartburn of my life. It was different than normal heartburn, it felt like my throat was literally on fire. Water did nothing to abate it. Finally, I ended up throwing up a little and that helped. Today is now Day 5 and I have no appetite and just feel very groggy. Any ideas or tips? My food has been VERY clean, as I've prepared every single thing I've eaten, so I'm assuming that's not it. Thanks for your help and advice!
jmcbn
Hi leslie I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling so good. Unfortunately without knowing what you've eaten it's difficult to tell if food is the likely culprit, or if you're the victim of some bug or other...Can you list what you've eaten, indicating portion sizes, along with sleep/stress/activity levels over the past 3 or 4 days, as well as any medical conditions and/or medications & we can take a look and hopefully help you out? leslie706
Sure! I've been having major problems sleeping. I've only averaged about three hours per night since I started my Whole30. Yesterday, for breakfast, I had three roasted chicken legs (in ghee), one cup of cooked green beans and sautéed red potatoes For lunch, I had a large bowl of collard greens with ham and a chicken leg, with a small apple with sun butter, with a cup of hot tea with coconut milk For dinner, I had one more chicken leg, a bowl of meat and veggie chili and some asparagus. As far as medications go, I take birth control, high dose aspirin and metformin (for PCOS) I did yoga yesterday, but had totally normal activity. jmcbn
Nothing in your food looks to me like it would cause the heartburn & vomiting that you describe.I wonder if you might just coincidentally be coming down with something? I'd suggest an OTC anti-emetic if you're still feeling the need to vomit, and sticking to comfort foods like bone broth, mashed root veg, scrambled eggs & blended soups. Ensure you're getting enough fluids on board & maybe try sipping on some ginger tea.I'd just comment that you may want to lighten up on the protein a little in your meals going forward, and be sure you're getting adequate fat at each meal - but for now focus on getting better...Hope you're feeling better soon. Moderators ultrarunnergirl Posted January 8, 2016 Moderators Share Posted January 8, 2016 Sorry you had this happen. It doesn't seem food related. Are you eating really close to bedtime by chance? Lying down shortly after eating can be a problem in some people. You might try a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar before your meal and see if that helps. Finally, you mentioned ham -- are all of the ingredients compliant? It is nearly impossible to find ham without some kind of sugar or honey in it. leslie706
Thank you so much for your responses. I am having to be a little heavy on protein, as I have to have enough to balance out any carbs I eat, cause the metformin (when I'm not insulin resistant) can make me shaky. I eat dinner around 6:00 and then will have a cup of tea between 8-10, depending on the day. The ham I'm eating is from a local farmer who butchers and salt cures them. It's yum yum! Maybe I am coming down with something. It's odd though, as I woke up feeling fine, just tired this morning. I'm wondering if maybe something in the Benadryl I took could have done it? If this happens again, consider the possibility that it's acid reflux, which can involve extremely painful heartburn and vomiting. Although, I will say that it's unusual for a reflux bout to occur after eating dinner that early and is probably more likely related to a food that you ate. leslie706
I keep thinking it's food related too, but the odd thing is that I didn't eat anything different than what I do (even when not on Whole30). I have only removed the bad stuff. I can't help but wonder if it was Benadryl, as I took the liquid instead of a pill (I couldn't find the pills). leslie706
I just looked up the Benadryl and it said that it has high fructose corn syrup in it. Could that have done it?
praxisproject
I just looked up the Benadryl and it said that it has high fructose corn syrup in it. Could that have done it? While a lot of people have reactions to it, sore throat is an odd one, I really don't think it's food related. But for the record, HFCS is a FODMAP (Fructose), it makes me feel sick, as does Agave syrup (Fructose), but not in the same kind of way as you describe. I have had a bug before that gave me really nasty "acid reflux", sweating and vomiting and it didn't last long, but my stomach was a bit sensitive for a while afterwards. If your throat is still sore, some peppermint tea might help.
leslie706
Crazily enough, the same thing happened again. It wasn't as bad, but I woke up at 5am with awful heartburn. I didn't have anything that wasn't totally clean, so I'm a bit stumped.
praxisproject
The bug I had lasted a few days, I ended up having to take (only two doses) of commercial antacid, but I probably waited too long before getting it. If it's a bug, the food you eat won't make much difference, unless it's an irritant (like nightshades, including paprika). Sleeping as close to sitting up will help you recover. Once the irritation settles, the heartburn feeling should stop (avoid nightshades until it's gone away, they make it much worse). Keep your liquids up too, vomiting is quite stressful on the body. If it continues and you don't think it's a bug, you may need to check with your doctor whether it could be the Metformin.
